Considerations for using the receipt visual editor
You can use the receipt visual editor to customize printed receipts across your Shopify POS locations. Review the considerations on this page before you start customizing to understand what you can change, what's automatically managed, and how your settings apply across different receipt types and locations.
Considerations for using the receipt visual editor
Before using the receipt visual editor, review the following considerations.
Design and content limitations
- Custom CSS, fonts, and designs aren't supported on printed receipts.
- Uploaded images, such as colored logos, are printed in greyscale on receipts.
- Languages not supported within Shopify by default aren't available on printed receipts.
Customization scope
- Customizations to the header and footer apply to all receipt types, including sales, return and exchange, gift, and gift card receipts. The transaction body content is managed by Shopify and might vary by receipt type.
- Customizations apply to all POS locations by default. To customize fields for a specific location, use the location picker before editing. When a location is customized individually, then subsequent global edits won't update that location until it's reset to the default template.
Compliance and regional requirements
- By default, receipts generated through Shopify POS are compliant with the requirements of supported regulated markets. If you've provided VAT identifiers and tax information in your Shopify admin, then these required fields are automatically included on receipts.
- Merchants in Italy: All receipt content and formatting are managed by the Epson RT printer. Receipt appearance and fields can't be changed within Shopify.
- Merchants in France: The receipt code editor isn't available for POS locations in France, so you customize receipts for these locations in the receipt visual editor only. Content that's required for Marque NF525 compliance can't be customized or removed. Refer to retail requirements in France for the receipt requirements that apply, including the business identifiers that display on your receipts and how they're set up.
Staff permissions
- To restrict staff access to receipt customization settings, assign the Limited permissions option for staff with POS PINs from the Staff settings page. Refer to assigning staff permissions.
Types of receipts
The receipt visual editor supports multiple receipt types. The following table describes when each receipt type prints, what it includes, and how it can be customized.
| Receipt type | When it prints | What it includes | Customization |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sales receipt | When you complete a sale in Shopify POS. | The full receipt template, including the header, transaction body, and footer. | All header, transaction body, and footer customizations set in the visual editor apply. |
| Return and exchange receipt | When you process a return or exchange in Shopify POS. | The same template as a sales receipt, with a few differences in the transaction body. | Header, footer, and customization options set in the visual editor apply. The transaction body isn't customizable. |
| Gift receipt | When you select this option from an order in Shopify POS. |
| Header and footer content set in the visual editor applies. The receipt is designed to be included with a gift without revealing prices, quantities, or items, so that the recipient can return or exchange items if necessary. You can print multiple copies of a gift receipt without extra processing. |
| Gift card receipt | When you sell a gift card in Shopify POS. By default, a gift card receipt prints automatically each time you sell a gift card. You can turn off automatic gift card receipt printing. |
| Header and footer content set in the visual editor applies. The body of the gift card receipt—code, balance, and scannable code—isn't customizable. If you don't sell physical gift cards, then the printed gift card receipt can be given as the gift card itself. |
To preview any receipt type, use the receipt type drop-down menu in the visual editor preview pane.
