Cash rounding on POS

You can configure cash transactions on Shopify POS to automatically round to the nearest available denomination in countries where small coins aren't in use. Shopify POS uses the Swedish rounding method to round to the nearest denomination.

Cash rounding ensures accurate cash tracking and accounting. Regions that support cash rounding have mandates from their local government on cash rounding rules.

Cash rounding automatically applies to the final total, after discounts and taxes are applied on all cash payments or refunds on Shopify POS. Cash rounding also applies to refunds and exchanges. For example, in Canada, if an order payment is $9.99 CAD, then the cash rounding adjustment is +$0.01 CAD and the rounded payment is $10.00 CAD. If the order is partially refunded $5.02 CAD in cash, then the cash rounding adjustment is -$0.02 CAD and the rounded refund is $5.00 CAD.

Considerations for cash rounding on Shopify POS

The following considerations apply to cash rounding on Shopify POS:

  • Only cash payments are rounded. Non-cash payments aren't rounded.
  • At checkout, cash rounded amounts display only after you select Cash as the payment method.
  • Cash rounding applies only when the currency used at checkout matches the local currency of the retail location. You can configure the currency used at checkout with Retail markets.
  • The cash counting tool won't display coins or bills that are no longer accepted as cash in your region. Cash counting rules differ depending on your region. For example, any tender less than 0.10 NZD isn't included in the cash counting tool.
  • Refunds to a gift card aren't rounded.
  • Full refunds and cancellations reverse the original rounded cash amount.
  • Partial refunds and exchanges calculate cash rounding based on the cash rounding rule for the return or exchange location.
  • Cash rounding is supported offline on Shopify POS version 11.11 or higher.

In countries where the legal tender is smaller than the rounding denomination, Shopify POS defaults to rounding the suggested amount received. For example, if one-cent coins are legal tender but not in circulation, then Shopify POS rounds to the nearest five cents. If a cash total ends in 33 cents, then the amount received suggestions display rounded options, such as totals ending in 35 cents, 00 cents, or 50 cents.

If your POS staff accepts the exact unrounded amount from the customer but selects a rounded suggestion in Shopify POS, then Shopify POS records the rounded amount.

Configure cash rounding in the Shopify admin

From the Shopify admin, you can manually configure cash rounding rules for each country where you use Shopify POS. At checkout, Shopify POS applies the cash rounding rule for the location where the order is completed. If that location doesn't have a custom rule, then Shopify POS applies the default cash rounding rule for the location's country.

You can configure the rounding method and denomination. If you select Nearest for a denomination that supports midpoint rounding, then you can choose whether midpoint amounts round up or down. For example, with a $0.10 CAD rounding denomination, $3.05 CAD can round down to $3.00 CAD or up to $3.10 CAD.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Point of Sale > Settings.

  2. In the Customization section, click POS app.

  3. Click Checkout > Cash.

  4. In the Cash rounding section, select the dropdown menu for the country that you want to customize cash rounding rules for, and then select one of the following options:

    • To turn cash rounding off, select No rounding.
    • To round up or down to the nearest denomination, select Nearest, select the denomination, and then select how midpoint amounts are rounded if that option is available.
    • To always round up to the nearest denomination, select Round up always, and then select the denomination.
    • To always round down to the nearest denomination, select Round down always, and then select the denomination.
  5. Click Save.
