Shopify POS iOS and Android device compatibility requirements

Shopify POS is available for only iOS and Android devices. It's not available for laptop or desktop computers, or Amazon Fire tablets.

Shopify POS works with devices that meet the following requirements:

List of iPhones, iPads, Android devices, and POS Go, plus the required generations and operating systems, that work with Shopify POS.
DeviceDescription
iPadGeneration 5 or higher running iPadOS 15.1 or higher
iPad Air Generation 2 or higher running iPadOS 15.1 or higher

POS GoPOS Go running the latest Shopify-provided software updates
AndroidPhone or tablet running official Android version 10.0 or higher, with Google Play Services and Google Mobile Services activated

Shopify POS no longer supports iOS 14 or lower. With older versions of iOS, you can continue to use the app but you can no longer update it. To take advantage of bug fixes and new features, you need to update your device to iOS 15.1 or higher. If that isn't possible, then switch to using Shopify POS on another device that is running iOS 15.1 or higher.

iOS permission requirements

If you update your device to iOS 15.1 or higher and use third-party Shopify apps, then you might need to activate Cross-Website tracking in your iOS settings. Cross-Website tracking lets third-party Shopify apps that you install in your Shopify admin stay connected in Shopify Inbox, Shopify Point of Sale, and the Shopify app.

To activate Cross-Website tracking, complete the following steps:

  1. On your iOS device, open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Shopify, Shopify POS, or Shopify Inbox.
  3. Activate Allow Cross-Website Tracking.

You can also buy these supported cash drawers from many authorized resellers.

Installing the cash drawer

Connect the cash drawer to the receipt printer using the cash drawer cable provided. The larger end of the cable plugs into the cash drawer, and the smaller end of the cable plugs into the receipt printer.

If you connect your receipt printer by USB using the Shopify POS Hub, then connect your cash drawer to the receipt printer as usual.

Connect a cash drawer when using Shopify POS Hub

Cash drawers don't connect directly to the Shopify POS Hub. When you use the Shopify POS Hub, connect the compatible receipt printer to the POS Hub, and then connect the cash drawer to the receipt printer.

Steps:

  1. Before you connect your hardware to the Shopify POS Hub, set up the POS Hub:

    1. Plug the Shopify POS Hub power cord into a power source.
    2. Connect the Shopify POS Hub's USB-C or Lightning cable to your POS device.
    3. Plug the other end of the Shopify POS Hub's USB-C or Lightning cable into the tablet port on the bottom of the Shopify POS Hub. Don't use any other USB-C port on the Shopify POS Hub for the tablet cable.
  2. Connect your compatible receipt printer to a USB port on the Shopify POS Hub.

  3. Connect the larger end of the cash drawer cable to the cash drawer.

  4. Connect the smaller end of the cash drawer cable to the receipt printer.

  5. Set up the receipt printer in Shopify POS.

  6. Test the cash drawer connection.

Opening the cash drawer

You can configure Shopify POS to open the cash drawer automatically after each cash transaction, or you can open it manually at any time.

Open the cash drawer manually

You can open a cash drawer manually with either of the following methods:

  • From Shopify POS, tap Register > Open drawer
  • Use the physical keys included with the cash drawer

Open the cash drawer automatically

The cash drawer connects to your device through the receipt printer and must be on the same wireless network.

In stores with multiple cash drawers, automatic opening only works when the device is connected to its default printer. If the default printer isn't available, then the receipt prints from another printer. Cash drawers connected to the secondary printer won't open. This ensures cash drawers only open at the expected location.

Steps:

  1. From Shopify POS, tap the Horizontal menu icon.

  2. Tap Settings > Payments.

  3. Tap Payment Options, and then activate Drawer auto-open.

Require a reason to open

To require staff to select a reason each time the drawer is opened manually, you can turn on Reason codes in the Cash management setting in your Shopify admin. This helps track cash handling throughout the day.

Test the connection to the cash drawer

When you've set up your receipt printer and your cash drawer, you can check that the connection between them is working.

Steps:

  1. From Shopify POS, tap the Connectivity Icon icon.

  2. In the Hardware section, tap the printer that you want to test.

  3. Tap Test cash drawer.

Common issues

To avoid common problems, make sure your printer is set up correctly in the following ways:

  • The cash drawer's cable is plugged into the receipt printer.
  • The receipt printer has paper.
  • The receipt printer is properly paired with the iPad, iPhone, or Android tablet. The pairing instructions for your receipt printer depends on which receipt printer model you have.
  • The receipt printer is set as the default printer for the device. If a receipt prints on a different connected printer because the default printer isn't available, then no cash drawers open automatically. This is a security behavior to prevent cash drawers from opening unexpectedly in a different part of the store.
  • You're using the cash drawer cable that you received in the hardware package to connect the cash drawer to the printer.

If you tap No Sale on the products and cart screen and the cash drawer doesn't open, then this is likely a problem with the cash drawer cable. Contact our support team.
