Migrating to the new receipt visual editor

If your receipt customizations haven't automatically migrated from the code editor to the receipt visual editor, then you can still switch between them.

Review the following considerations for switching between the receipt visual editor and the code editor.

Code editor eligibility

• The code editor applies only to POS Pro locations.
• The code editor isn't available for any locations in Italy or France. In Italy, all receipt content and formatting are managed by the Epson RT printer.

Access limitations

• You can switch between editors only from the Shopify admin.
• You can use the code editor only from your Shopify admin on desktop.

Customization handling

• Your customizations are saved separately for each editor. For example, if you add SKU information to your receipts in the visual editor, but are still using the code editor, then the SKU doesn't display in your receipts. However, if you switch back to the visual editor, then the setting to display the SKU is still activated in the visual editor and displays on your receipts.

Before you migrate to the receipt visual editor, review the Shopify POS app versions used by your store's devices. The app version determines whether a device prints the new receipt visual editor template or continues to print the previous receipt template:

• The unified receipt template prints from Shopify POS app version 11.10 or later. Devices that run an earlier version continue to print the previous receipt template.
• If your devices run a mix of Shopify POS app versions, then your business prints two different receipt templates until you update every device. The same sale prints in the new template from a device on Shopify POS app version 11.10 or later, and in the previous template from a device on an earlier version.
• If any POS device that your store used in the last 90 days runs a Shopify POS app version earlier than 11.10, then the printed receipts editor displays a banner that prompts you to update the Shopify POS app. Archived devices and simulators don't count.

You need to review your receipts and manually migrate customizations before you activate the receipt visual editor. After you activate the visual editor, the code editor is removed from your shop and can't be restored.

Migration method

How your store migrates to the receipt visual editor depends on your current receipt customizations:

• If you don't have custom Liquid receipt code, then your store moves to the receipt visual editor automatically, and you don't need to do anything.
• If you have custom Liquid receipt code at a Shopify POS Pro location, then you keep the code editor until you activate the receipt visual editor, or until January 1, 2027, when all stores are migrated.

Review your receipt templates

When you migrate to the receipt visual editor, customizations that can be reliably translated, such as text blocks, location-specific content, and standard return and exchange formatting, are migrated automatically. Customizations that can't be converted automatically are flagged for you to rebuild in the visual editor.

Review all of your receipt templates and confirm which customizations have been automatically migrated and which customizations require you to manually rebuild them.

The following code editor customizations are available as standard fields in the visual editor:

Manually migrate custom receipt elements to the receipt visual editor

Use the receipt visual editor to rebuild any customizations that were flagged during migration. To rebuild complex Liquid customizations, you can add a custom Liquid block to the receipt header or footer.

Preview receipts from Shopify POS app versions earlier than 11.10

Activate the receipt visual editor only after you update the Shopify POS app to version 11.10 or later on all of your devices. Until you update every device, your devices on earlier versions print the previous receipt template.

You can preview what your receipts look like on POS devices that are on a Shopify POS app version earlier than 11.10.

1. From your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Point of Sale.

2. In the Customize the in-store experience section, click Edit for Receipts.

3. Click Preview, and then select the receipt type that you want to preview.

Activate the receipt visual editor

After you’ve reviewed your receipts and migrated all custom elements to the receipt visual editor, you can activate it by clicking Activate visual editor in the Preview receipts setting.
