Migrating from Shopify POS Go to other payment options

From May 26, 2027, POS Go will stop working as a handheld mobile point-of-sale device and automatically switch to countertop payment terminal mode. You can continue to use the device as a customer-facing card reader when paired with a tablet. This change doesn't affect Shopify POS Terminal, which will continue to be supported.

This guide explains what's changing, how to continue using your existing device, and other mobile selling options you can consider.

Timeline for migrating from POS Go to other payment options

POS Go continues to work as normal until mobile selling functionality ends. If you rely on POS Go for mobile selling, then choose an alternative payment option before May 26, 2027. There is no trade-in program for the POS Go mobile device. Your existing POS Go can be repurposed as a countertop payment terminal.

Review the following timeline to plan for the POS Go transition to countertop payment terminal mode:

  • January 1, 2027: POS Go enters maintenance mode. The device continues to work normally, but it no longer receives regular software updates.
  • May 26, 2027: POS Go mobile selling functionality ends. All POS Go devices automatically switch to countertop payment terminal mode and can continue to work as customer-facing card readers when paired with a tablet.

Choosing a mobile selling option for Shopify POS

Review the following options that are available for mobile selling with Shopify POS.

Verifone Victa Mobile

Victa Mobile is a mobile selling device, offered in partnership with Verifone. It runs Shopify POS, accepts tap, chip, swipe, and digital wallet payments, and includes a built-in barcode scanner.

Victa Mobile can also work as a countertop payment terminal when docked and paired with a tablet.

Victa Mobile might be the right fit for your retail setup if you have any of the following requirements:

  • Need full payment coverage, including chip and swipe payments.
  • Scan barcodes regularly at checkout.
  • Require a sturdy device built for all-day use.
  • Run a high-volume store where reliability and speed matter.
  • Have higher average order values and need more payment flexibility than contactless payments only.

Victa Mobile is available for pre-order in the United States and Canada, with availability in more markets expected later in 2026. If Victa Mobile isn't available in your country, then consider using Tap to Pay on iPhone or Android or using your POS Go in countertop payment terminal mode.

Tap to Pay on iPhone or Android

With Tap to Pay on iPhone and Tap to Pay on Android, staff can run the Shopify POS app on a compatible iPhone or Android phone and accept contactless payments directly on the device. If you already have a compatible mobile device, then no additional hardware is required.

If you meet any of the following requirements, then Tap to Pay might be the right fit for your retail setup:

  • Accept mostly contactless payments, such as tap and digital wallets.
  • Prefer the familiarity of a smartphone.
  • Want the flexibility to install other apps on the same device.

Tap to Pay is contactless only. It doesn't support chip or swipe transactions. If you want to accept chip or swipe card payments, then consider the Verifone Victa Mobile for your retail setup.

Using your POS Go as a countertop payment terminal

Your POS Go can still work as a countertop payment terminal after May 26, 2027. In countertop payment terminal mode, it becomes a customer-facing card reader called the POS Terminal, that you can pair with a tablet running Shopify POS.

You can start using POS Go in countertop payment terminal mode now by purchasing the dock accessory. After May 26, 2027, you can also use POS Go in countertop payment terminal mode without the dock if you prefer. Learn more about POS Terminal and using the POS Go in countertop payment terminal mode.
