Accept payments using Shopify POS with Tap to Pay on Android
You can use Tap to Pay on Android with Shopify POS to accept contactless credit cards or debit cards and all digital wallets without the need for payment hardware. To accept swipe or PIN payments, switch to another paired card reader. Tap to Pay on Android is available on every Shopify plan and transactions are subject to your in-person credit card rates from Shopify Payments.

Requirements for using Tap to Pay on Android
To use Tap to Pay on Android, you need to meet the following requirements:
- Your store needs to be based in one of the following regions:
- North America: Canada, United States.
- Europe: Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom.
- Asia-Pacific: Australia, New Zealand, Singapore.
- Your store currency must match the local currency of your store's locations.
- You need to have Shopify Payments activated as your store's payment provider.
- You need to accept Tap to Pay on POS devices payment.
- You need to have the Point of Sale sales channel installed in your Shopify admin.
- You need to use Shopify POS installed on your Android device.
- You need to have an internet connection.
- Your Android device needs to have location services turned on.
- You need to meet all of the device requirements for Shopify POS hardware for Android.
- Your Android device needs to be on the Android 13 or higher version.
- Your Android device's last Android security patch update must be from within the last 12 months.
- Your Android device needs to have the NFC (Near Field Communication) setting turned on.
- Your Android device needs to have developer mode turned off.
- You need to close any application that is screen recording or that has the display over other apps permission.

Activate Tap to Pay on Android for Shopify POS
Tap to Pay on Android is automatically activated at the store level in > Settings > Payments in Shopify POS. Any compatible Android device that’s signed in to your Shopify POS account is ready to accept payments without additional setup.
Activate Tap to Pay on Android for multiple entities
If you're on the Shopify Plus or Enterprise commerce plan and multi-entity selling is set up in your Shopify admin, then Tap to Pay on Android is automatically activated for each store account in your organization when you meet the following requirements:
- Each business entity has its own Shopify Payments account.
- Your retail locations meet the general requirements for Tap to Pay on Android.
Deactivate Tap to Pay on Android
Tap to Pay on Android can be deactivated for a single device or for all devices that are logged into Shopify POS under your store's account.
Deactivate Tap to Pay on Android for a single device
Steps:
From Shopify POS, tap the
icon.
Tap Settings > Payments.
In the Payments section, deactivate Tap to Pay.
Deactivate Tap to Pay on Android for all devices that are logged into Shopify POS under your store's account
Steps:
From your Shopify admin, go to Point of Sale > Settings.
Click Payments
Find Tap to Pay on Android, and then use the toggle to deactivate Tap to Pay.
Deactivate Tap to Pay on Android for multiple entities
If you're on the Shopify Plus or Enterprise commerce plan and multi-entity selling is set up in your Shopify admin, then you can deactivate Tap to Pay on Android for multiple business entities in one place. You need to complete the steps for each of your accounts in your Shopify admin to deactivate Tap to Pay on Android for that entity.
Steps:
From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Payments.
In the Payment providers section, click Shopify Payments.
In the Shopify Payments account section, click the account that you want to deactivate Tap to Pay on Android for.
Click Manage payment methods.
Click In-person.
Click the toggle to deactivate Tap to Pay on Android.
Accept payments with Tap to Pay on Android
For swipe or PIN payments, you need to have an additional card reader paired. Make sure you choose the correct card reader for your customer's payment method at checkout. Use Tap to Pay on Android for contactless payment and your card reader for payments that require contact.
Transactions that require PIN entry automatically prompt a PIN entry screen when using Tap to Pay on Android. During a transaction, Tap to Pay on Android is designed to prevent all photo, video, screenshot, and screen-recording features on your Android device from capturing a customer's card number or PIN information.
Steps:
From Shopify POS, add items to the cart, and then tap Checkout.
From the Payment options screen, tap Tap to Pay on Android.
The Tap to Pay on Android interface displays indicating where your customer must hold their contactless credit card, debit card, or their mobile wallet on their smartphone or smartwatch.
Ask the customer to hold their contactless payment method behind the tap area until the animation indicates the payment has been completed and you hear the Tap to Pay on Android success sound. Transactions that require PIN entry will automatically prompt a PIN entry screen.
Select whether to provide the customer with a receipt, and then tap Done to return to the Shopify POS home screen.
Troubleshoot Tap to Pay on Android
If Tap to Pay on Android isn't working, then try the following troubleshooting steps:
- Verify that you meet the requirements to use Tap to Pay on Android.
- Verify that Tap to Pay (iOS & Android) has been activated in your Shopify admin under Point of Sale sales channel > Settings > Payments
- Verify that you have an internet connection. Shopify POS needs to connect to the internet through Wi-Fi or your device's cellular data to process payments. If you can't connect to the internet, then you need to use a different payment type while you're offline.
- Check your firewall settings.
- Make sure that your device has Bluetooth activated and that Shopify POS has the necessary permissions to access the device's Bluetooth.
- Make sure that your device has location services turned on and that Shopify POS has the necessary permissions to access your device's location.
- To connect to Tap to Pay on Android, Shopify Payments test mode must be turned off.
If an Android device has had unauthorized modifications, then you might not be able to use Tap to Pay on Android.
If your card reader's still not working, then from Shopify POS, send a report to Shopify Support by tapping > Support > Report a bug. Support will contact you after the report has been submitted.
