Zebra DS2278 barcode scanner
The Zebra DS2278 is a barcode scanner that reads 1D and 2D barcodes and is available to purchase in supported countries.

Choose how to connect your Zebra DS2278 barcode scanner
You can connect the Zebra DS2278 barcode scanner to your POS device in the following ways:

Connect your Zebra DS2278 scanner using Shopify POS Hub
Use the Shopify POS Hub to connect the Zebra DS2278 barcode scanner by USB to a compatible iPad or Android device.
Steps:
Before you connect your hardware to the Shopify POS Hub, set up the POS Hub:
- Plug the Shopify POS Hub power cord into a power source.
- Connect the Shopify POS Hub's USB-C or Lightning cable to your POS device.
- Plug the other end of the Shopify POS Hub's USB-C or Lightning cable into the tablet port on the bottom of the Shopify POS Hub. Don't use any other USB-C port on the Shopify POS Hub for the tablet cable.
Place the barcode scanner in its charging cradle.
Plug the cradle's USB cable into a peripheral USB port on the Shopify POS Hub.
In Shopify POS, open the
section to confirm that the scanner is connected.
Pair your Zebra DS2278 scanner to your POS device using Bluetooth
To pair your Zebra DS2278 scanner to your POS device using Bluetooth, put your barcode scanner in Bluetooth pairing mode, and then pair the scanner to your POS device from the device's Bluetooth settings. If you're using an iOS device for POS, then you must perform firstly a factory reset on your barcode scanner before pairing.
Steps:
iOS
- Scan the Set Factory Defaults barcode to factory reset your scanner.

- Scan the HID Bluetooth Classic barcode to put your scanner in Bluetooth pairing mode.

- On your iOS device, open Settings, and then tap Bluetooth.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Select your barcode scanner from the list to pair it with your iOS device.
Android
- Scan the HID Bluetooth Classic barcode to put your scanner in Bluetooth pairing mode.

- On your Android device, open Settings, and then tap Bluetooth.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Select your barcode scanner from the list to pair it with your Android device.
Unpair from your device's Bluetooth settings
You can pair your scanner with only one POS device at a time using Bluetooth. If you want to pair it with a different device, or you need to clear an existing pairing, then remove the scanner from your device's Bluetooth settings.
Steps:
- On your POS device, open Settings, and then tap Bluetooth.
- Tap the information (i) icon next to your barcode scanner.
- Tap Forget This Device.
General troubleshooting for the Zebra DS2278 barcode scanner
If you have issues with the Zebra DS2278 barcode scanner, then complete the following troubleshooting steps:
Check that your POS device meets Shopify POS device requirements. If you use the Shopify POS Hub, then confirm your device is listed in the compatible devices with the Shopify POS Hub.
Make sure Shopify POS is up to date.
Make sure that your device is up to date:
- To update your iOS device, go to your device's settings, and then tap General > Software Update. If there's an update available, then you can tap Update now.
- To update your Android device, go to your device's settings, and then tap Software update. If there's an update available, then follow the on-screen instructions to install it.
If you use Bluetooth, then turn Bluetooth off and on again on your POS device, or move the scanner closer to the device to reduce range or signal issues.
Charge the scanner. If the scanner doesn't respond, then try a different power outlet or a different charge cable to determine if there's a power issue.
Unpair the scanner from your POS device, and then complete the pairing steps again.
Factory reset your scanner.
Troubleshoot Shopify POS Hub connection issues
If your POS hardware doesn't connect through the Shopify POS Hub, then complete the Shopify POS Hub troubleshooting steps.
Check your app permissions
If you connect the scanner using Bluetooth, then review the following permissions in your device settings for the Shopify POS app.

Change the Zebra DS2278 barcode scanner from Application Mode to Keyboard Mode
When you set up a barcode scanner, there are two primary connection methods to determine how data is read and received by the scanner:
- Basic (HID) Mode, also known as Keyboard Mode.
- Application Mode.
When you connect your scanner to Shopify POS, the barcode that you scan puts the scanner into Application Mode. Application Mode is standard for many apps that use these scanners, including Shopify POS. However, Application Mode might not be compatible when you use the scanner to create and manage inventory transfers and shipments in your Shopify admin. To resolve this, you can put your scanner into USB Keyboard (HID) Mode.
To put your Zebra DS2278 barcode scanner into USB Keyboard (HID) Mode, scan the following barcode:

Factory reset your Zebra DS2278 barcode scanner
To factory reset your Zebra DS2278 barcode scanner or change to keyboard mode, scan the Set Factory Defaults barcode, and then scan the Symbol Native API barcode to put your scanner in the POS app compatible mode.
