Can I apply Shop Cash to an order after checkout?
No. Shop Cash is applied by the customer during checkout. You can't apply Shop Cash to an order from Shopify admin or through an API after the order is placed.
Can I opt out of accepting Shop Cash?
No. Shop Cash is enabled automatically for eligible stores. There isn't a setting in Shopify admin to turn Shop Cash on or off.
Can I choose which products accept Shop Cash?
No. You can't choose Shop Cash eligibility at the product or stock keeping unit (SKU) level. Eligibility is determined during checkout.
Shop Cash is available for most physical products that ship and certain service-like charges or line items. Gift cards, recurring subscription payments, and unsupported digital products aren't eligible.
Can customers choose a partial amount of Shop Cash to redeem?
No. Customers can't choose how much Shop Cash to apply during checkout. If the customer's balance is more than the eligible order total, then Shop Cash is applied for the order amount and the rest stays in their Shop Cash account.
If the customer's balance is less than the eligible order total, then their balance is applied, up to a limit. Checkout leaves a minimum payment on the customer's other payment method, so when applying the full balance would leave less than that minimum, the Shop Cash amount is reduced and the difference stays in the customer's balance. The minimum depends on the checkout currency.
Does the customer's Shop Cash balance need to be in the same currency as my store?
No. The customer's Shop Cash balance doesn't need to be in the same currency as the order. When supported, the customer's Shop Cash balance is converted into the order currency during checkout.
The order must still be priced in a supported checkout currency. For the current list of supported checkout currencies and other checkout requirements, refer to Shop Cash at checkout.
Why doesn't Shop Cash appear for a customer?
Shop Cash might not appear for a customer for several reasons, including the following scenarios:
- The checkout wasn't initiated from Shop.
- The order is priced in an unsupported checkout currency.
- The cart contains a gift card or unsupported product type.
- The order includes a recurring subscription payment, or the customer hasn't selected a card for an initial subscription payment.
- The customer doesn't meet Shop buyer eligibility requirements.
- The customer hasn't verified their phone number in Shop.
- Your checkout doesn't use Checkout Extensibility.
For more information, refer to Shop Cash at checkout.
Does Shop Cash work with subscriptions?
Yes, customers can use Shop Cash on the initial subscription payment when they also select a card. Customers can't use Shop Cash for recurring subscription payments after the order is placed.
Does Shop Cash work with gift cards or digital products?
Customers can't use Shop Cash to buy gift cards. Shop Cash is available for most physical products that ship and certain service-like charges and line items, such as shipping, delivery, pickup, tips, donations, warranties or protection plans, taxes, duties, and return or exchange fees. Unsupported digital products aren't eligible.
How should my ERP or OMS map Shop Cash?
Map Shop Cash as its own payment method. Where gateway values are available, use shop_cash.
Your systems should support more than one payment method on one order, store full Shop Cash authorization values without truncating them, process Shop Cash refunds against the capture transaction, and reconcile Shop Cash payout rows separately from card payment rows.
For more information, refer to Shop Cash order data and third-party integrations.
Is Shop Cash a discount, gift card, or store credit?
No. Shop Cash is a payment method. It doesn't reduce the order subtotal, taxes, shipping, or discounts. Don't map Shop Cash as a discount, gift card, or store credit in your ERP, OMS, fulfillment, accounting, or return systems.
Why doesn't a Shop Cash payout appear on the same payout as the card portion?
The card or Shop Pay Installments portion and the Shop Cash portion are separate payment and balance transactions. They can settle on different timelines and appear in different Shopify Payments payouts.
Reconcile Shop Cash by order and transaction ID, not only by payout date.
Why is one Shop Cash payout line associated with multiple orders?
A single shop_cash_credit payout transaction can represent one order or multiple orders. Review the payout details, payout export, or payout API data to see the order-level itemization.
For more information, refer to Reconciling Shop Cash payouts.
Why do I see a Shop Cash credit but not a matching Shop Cash refund debit?
This can happen for several reasons:
- The refunded portion was Shop offer or campaign-funded value, not customer Shop Cash balance. Look for a campaign billing reversal, such as
shop_cash_campaign_billing_debit_reversal. - The refund was applied entirely to the card or Shop Pay Installments portion of the order.
- The Shop Cash refund failed and needs to be retried.
For more information, refer to Refunds, returns, and exchanges with Shop Cash.
Does Shop Cash work with pre-orders?
Shop Cash can work with pre-orders that ship within approximately 30 days of order placement. For pre-orders that ship after approximately 30 days, the Shop Cash authorization might expire and be voided before fulfillment.
If your pre-order flow depends on delayed capture beyond approximately 30 days, then contact Shopify Support before accepting Shop Cash on those orders.
Do extended authorization periods work with Shop Cash?
No. Extended authorization periods on the Shopify Plus plan apply to the card or Shop Pay Installments payment. They don't extend the Shop Cash authorization window.
Can Shop Cash be captured in multiple parts?
No. Shop Cash doesn't support partial captures or multiple captures against one Shop Cash authorization. The first successful capture captures the full authorized Shop Cash amount.
Can I test Shop Cash before launch?
Shop Cash testing has limitations. Development stores, test mode, and the Bogus gateway don't reliably create production-like Shop Cash checkout, balance, payout, and settlement data.
The most reliable enterprise validation path is to place a low-value production order initiated from Shop, and then refund it. For more information, refer to Prepare your systems for Shop Cash.
