Shop Cash at checkout
Shop Cash is a payment method that eligible customers can use during eligible Shop purchases. You can review where customers can use Shop Cash to answer customer questions, prepare your checkout and support teams, and understand why customers might not be able to use Shop Cash for a specific order.
Customers can use Shop Cash only during checkout. You can't apply Shop Cash to an order on behalf of a customer after the order is placed.

Where customers can use Shop Cash
Customers can use Shop Cash in the following checkout experiences:
- The Shop app
- The Shop website
- Shop Pay checkout on your online store, after the customer is redirected from Shop
For example, a customer might browse a product in the Shop app, and then be redirected to your online store checkout to complete the purchase. If the order is eligible and the customer pays with Shop Pay, then they can use Shop Cash during checkout.
Customers can't use Shop Cash in the following checkout experiences:
- Direct online store checkout that wasn't initiated from Shop
- Draft orders
- POS orders
- B2B or wholesale checkouts
- Checkouts that use the legacy checkout instead of Checkout Extensibility
From a merchant operations perspective, Shop Cash order, transaction, and payout records are the same whether the customer starts from the Shop app, the Shop website, or a Shop-initiated redirect into Shop Pay.
Requirements for using Shop Cash at checkout
For a customer to use Shop Cash, the order and checkout must meet Shop Cash eligibility requirements:
- The checkout is initiated from Shop.
- The order is priced in a supported checkout currency. Supported checkout currencies are USD, CAD, GBP, AUD, and EUR.
- Your Shopify Payments account is in a Shopify Payments supported country and settlement currency, excluding Hong Kong, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
- Your store accepts Shop Pay.
- Your checkout uses Checkout Extensibility.
- The customer has a billing address and verified phone number in a Shopify Payments supported country, excluding the UAE.
- The order doesn't contain excluded products or purchase types.
The customer's Shop Cash balance doesn't need to be in the same currency as the order. When supported, the customer's Shop Cash balance is converted into the order currency during checkout. For example, a customer with a USD Shop Cash balance can redeem Shop Cash on a CAD, GBP, AUD, or EUR checkout when the order is otherwise eligible.
Product and order eligibility
Shop Cash is available for most physical products that ship. It can also apply to certain service charges and line items, such as shipping, delivery, pickup, tips, donations, warranties or protection plans, taxes, tariffs, duties, and return or exchange fees.
Customers can't use Shop Cash for the following product or order types:
- Gift cards
- Recurring subscription payments
- Arbitrary digital products outside supported service charges
- Wholesale or B2B orders
You can't choose which individual products accept Shop Cash. Eligibility is determined during checkout.
How customers use Shop Cash
When an order is eligible and the customer chooses to use Shop Cash, the lesser of the customer's available Shop Cash balance and the eligible order total is applied. The customer can't select a smaller partial amount. Any remaining order balance is paid with Shop Pay or Shop Pay Installments.
Checkout leaves a minimum payment on the customer's other payment method. When applying the full Shop Cash balance would leave less than that minimum, the Shop Cash amount is reduced so the minimum remains, and the difference stays in the customer's balance. The minimum depends on the checkout currency.
When a customer uses Shop Cash and Shop Pay on the same order, the order includes more than one payment method. For an example of how Shop Cash and Shop Pay are recorded on the same order, refer to Shop Cash order data and third-party integrations.
After the order is placed, Shop Cash is listed as a payment method on the customer's order receipt in the Shop app.
Why customers might not be able to use Shop Cash
Customers might not be able to use Shop Cash for several reasons, even when your store is eligible. Common causes include the following scenarios:
- The customer went directly to your online store checkout instead of starting from Shop.
- The order is priced in an unsupported checkout currency.
- The cart contains a gift card or unsupported product type.
- The order includes a recurring subscription payment, or the customer hasn't selected a card for an initial subscription payment.
- The customer doesn't meet Shop customer eligibility requirements.
- The customer hasn't verified their phone number in Shop.
- Your checkout doesn't use Checkout Extensibility.
