In India, you can pay your Shopify bills in Indian rupees (INR) using Unified Payments Interface (UPI), or a co‑branded debit or credit card through Visa, Mastercard, or the RuPay network.

Making bill payments in Indian rupees (INR)

You can pay your Shopify bills in INR using Unified Payments Interface (UPI), or a co‑branded debit or credit card through Visa, Mastercard, or the RuPay network.

Create a recurring payment mandate with Razorpay

In response to the Reserve Bank of India's guidelines for processing recurring online payments, Shopify bill payments are processed through Razorpay, a secure payment partner. Adding or re-entering your card connects you to Razorpay, where you establish a mandate that permits Shopify to automatically charge your card each month. Whenever this mandate is used to charge your card, your bank sends a pre-debit notification to you through SMS, giving notice that Shopify charges your card in 24-48 hours. If the charge exceeds ₹15,000 INR, then you need to complete an additional authentication step through the pre-debit SMS notification.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Billing.

  2. In the Payment methods section, do one of the following:

    1. If you're adding a new card, then click Replace credit card.
    2. If you're re-entering your card, then click the Horizontal menu button for your card, and then click Replace.
  3. Enter your card information and billing address.

  4. Click Replace credit card. This activates a redirect to Razorpay. If you receive an error message stating that your card isn't supported, then the card and its issuing bank don't support recurring online payments. Try again with a different card.

  5. Approve the mandate through Razorpay.

Manually paying an invoice over ₹15,000 INR

When you manually pay an invoice exceeding ₹15,000 INR, stay on the page after clicking Pay bill - you'll be redirected to Razorpay where you can complete the required authentication. Razorpay will send an SMS notification with an OTP (one-time password) that you'll need to enter during the authentication process. After completing authentication, you'll be redirected back to Shopify with payment confirmation. If you don't complete the OTP authentication within the timeframe (typically 10 minutes) or if you close the browser during this process, the payment will fail and you'll need to restart the payment process from your Shopify admin.

Set up Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments

If you have a UPI ID, payment app, and PIN, then you can add UPI as your primary payment method for Shopify bills.

To set up automated bill payments, confirm that your store's billing address is in India and your billing currency is set to INR, and then use your UPI payment app to establish a UPI mandate.

A UPI mandate is a pre-approved instruction that permits a recurring, automatic debit from your bank account to pay for regular bills. When you create a UPI mandate for your Shopify bill, your bank account is automatically debited each month.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Billing.

  2. In the Payment methods section, click Set up UPI.

  3. In the Send your UPI ID for verification dialog, enter your UPI ID.

  4. Click Send.

  5. On your mobile device, use your UPI payment app to approve the mandate and enter your UPI PIN.

  6. On your billing settings page, confirm the status of your UPI setup:

    • If the UPI setup was successful, then UPI is saved as Primary in the Payment methods section.
    • If the UPI setup was unsuccessful, then an alert suggests that you try again or add a different UPI ID.

Using UPI apps and handles

If you're billed in Indian Rupees (INR) and want to use a Unified Payment Interface (UPI) application, then you must use a viable UPI application and an approved handle. If you don't use an approved handle, then your payment might fail. If you have questions regarding UPI applications and their handles, then you must contact Razorpay's customer support team as they support the use of these features.

Troubleshooting bill payments in INR

If you're having issues with your Shopify bill payments in INR, then you can troubleshoot common problems using the following steps.

Step 1: General troubleshooting

Try the following common fixes that apply to most INR billing issues:

  • Verify that your store address is complete and located in India.
  • Ensure that your payment method supports recurring payments in INR.
  • Check that you have a valid phone number for pre-debit notifications.
  • Confirm that your billing currency is set to INR.
  • Verify that all address fields contain between 3 and 100 characters.

Step 2: Select your INR billing issue

Troubleshoot "This UPI ID couldn't be authorized" error

If you get the error message "This UPI ID couldn't be authorized", then your Shopify store address doesn't meet the requirements for UPI authorization or the address contains invalid information.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > General.

  2. Verify that your store address is complete and located in India.

  3. Ensure that all address fields contain between 3 and 100 characters.

  4. Check that your address format matches with Google Maps information.

  5. Verify that your phone number is valid and includes the country code.

  6. Update any incorrect information and try adding your UPI ID again.

Troubleshoot "Please include the country code" when adding UPI

You might see the error message "Please include the country code" on the phone number field when you add UPI as a billing payment method in Settings > Billing > Billing profile > Add payment method > UPI. This can happen even when you already entered + and your country code.

The field doesn't accept a + prefix or spaces. Enter your full number as digits only: your country code followed by your mobile number, in one continuous string.

Steps:

  1. Remove the + sign and any spaces from your phone number.
  2. Enter the country code and mobile number as digits only (for India, 91 plus your 10-digit number, for example 919876543210).
  3. Submit the form again.

If the error persists after you try a digits-only number, then contact Shopify Support.

Troubleshoot address validation errors

If you receive address validation errors such as "BAD_REQUEST_ERROR" when adding a payment method, then your address information doesn't meet the required format and character requirements.

Your address must meet the following criteria:

  • Business name: Between 5 and 50 characters, using only uppercase letters (A-Z), lowercase letters (a-z), and whitespace (not at the beginning)
  • City: Between 3 and 50 characters, using only letters and whitespace (no special characters)
  • Province/State: Between 3 and 50 characters, using only letters and whitespace (no special characters)
  • Address lines: Between 3 and 100 characters, using letters, numbers, whitespace, and these special characters: *&/-()#_+{}[]:'".,
  • ZIP/PIN code: Valid 6-digit numeric PIN code for India

Steps:

  1. Review each address field to ensure that it meets the character requirements.
  2. Remove any special characters that aren't allowed.
  3. Verify that your PIN code is exactly 6 digits and numeric only.
  4. Ensure that your business name doesn't start with a space.
  5. Check that your address matches Google Maps information for validation.
  6. Update your address and try adding your payment method again.
Troubleshoot credit card rejection during verification

If you get the error message "Your card was rejected while verifying", then your credit card doesn't support recurring payments or isn't from a supported bank and card network.

Steps:

  1. Verify that your credit card is from a supported bank and card network.
  2. Contact your bank to confirm that recurring payments are activated for your card.
  3. Ensure that your store address is complete and accurate in Settings > General.
  4. Verify that you have a valid phone number on file.
  5. Check that all address fields meet the character requirements.
  6. Try using a different supported card if the issue persists.
Troubleshoot failed card payments

If your supported card's payment attempt fails, then there might be restrictions or settings that prevent the transaction from processing.

Steps:

  1. Contact your bank to confirm that recurring payments are activated for your card.
  2. Verify that international transactions are activated if required.
  3. Check that your card has sufficient funds or available credit.
  4. Ensure that there are no daily or monthly transaction limits being exceeded.
  5. Ask your bank about any holds or restrictions on your account.
  6. Try the payment again after resolving any restrictions with your bank.
Troubleshoot payments exceeding transaction limits

Bills exceeding specific thresholds require additional authentication. For credit cards, the threshold is ₹15,000 INR. For UPI, the threshold is ₹5,000 INR. If you don't complete the authentication within the required timeframe, than the payment will fail.

Steps:

  1. Check your SMS messages for pre-debit notifications from your bank.
  2. Approve the pre-debit notification within the specified timeframe (usually 24-48 hours).
  3. Ensure that your phone number is correct and can receive SMS messages.
  4. Contact your bank if you don't receive the SMS notification.
  5. If using UPI and your bill exceeds ₹100,000 INR, then consider using a credit card instead.
  6. For future payments, ensure that you monitor for and respond to pre-debit notifications promptly.

Step 3: Contact support

If you've tried the troubleshooting steps and are still experiencing INR billing issues, then contact your bank or payment provider first. If the issue persists after speaking with your payment provider, then contact Shopify Support with the following information:

  • Description of the specific error message you're receiving
  • Screenshots of any error messages (without showing sensitive information)
  • Confirmation that your address meets all requirements
  • Details about steps you've tried to resolve the issue
