Troubleshooting Shopify POS setup

This page covers issues that surface during initial Shopify POS setup or right after launching a new retail location. For ongoing performance issues with an established setup, refer to troubleshooting the Shopify POS app.

General checks before troubleshooting

Before working through specific issues, complete the following basic checks:

Troubleshooting specific issues

Expand any of the following sections for step-by-step guidance on a specific Shopify POS setup issue.

Troubleshoot products not displaying on Shopify POS

Products not displaying on Shopify POS is usually caused by one of the following issues:

  • Products aren't assigned to the Point of Sale sales channel. In your Shopify admin, set product availability to include the Point of Sale sales channel. Use the bulk editor to update many products at the same time.
  • Inventory isn't allocated to the new location. Adjust inventory quantities for each product at the new location.
  • Inventory tracking isn't activated. On each product, make sure the Track quantity setting is activated. Refer to setting up inventory tracking.
  • The catalog sync hasn't completed. In Shopify POS, tap Connectivity Icon > Shopify > Store data and confirm the sync status. To manually trigger a sync, refer to resync Shopify POS with your Shopify admin. Large catalogs can take up to 1 hour to sync on first login.
Troubleshoot incorrect inventory counts at a new location

If inventory counts in Shopify POS don't match what's on the shelf, then quantities likely weren't allocated to the new location before launch.

Troubleshoot card payments failing on Shopify POS

If card payments fail during setup or right after launch, then check the following:

Troubleshoot wrong tax rates applied at a new location

Incorrect tax rates at a new POS location are usually caused by an incomplete location address. Tax rates are determined by the address, so missing details such as the postal code can result in the wrong rate being applied.

Troubleshoot POS hardware not connecting

Refer to supported Shopify POS hardware for your specific hardware model, and then review the troubleshooting instructions.

Troubleshoot staff unable to sign in to Shopify POS

If staff can't sign in to a new Shopify POS device, then complete the following checks:

  • Confirm that the first device login was completed by the store owner, organization owner, or a user with the POS device setup role. Staff PINs don't work until after this initial login.
  • Verify that staff accounts have been created and that each staff member has the correct Point of Sale staff permissions.
  • Confirm that the staff member is signing in to the correct location.
Troubleshoot Shopify POS loading but payments failing

If Shopify POS loads but payments fail, then a firewall is likely blocking required domains or ports. This often appears at enterprise locations with managed networks.
