Gift cards on Shopify POS overview

To sell and redeem digital gift cards with Shopify POS, you need to activate gift cards as a payment method in the Shopify POS app.

If you want to sell and redeem physical gift cards, then you also need to activate the setting for issuing digital or physical gift cards from the POS editor in your Shopify admin.

You can customize the types of gift cards you issue and accept for payment. For example, you can choose to issue and accept only digital gift cards, or you can issue and accept both digital and physical gift cards. This setting applies to all POS devices at all locations.

You can set the type of gift card to issue from the POS editor in your Shopify admin. If your store doesn't have any gift card products yet, then add a gift card product first. You can order physical gift cards from the Shopify Hardware Store in supported countries.

Steps:

1. From your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Point of Sale.

2. In the Customize the in-store experience section, click Edit for POS app.

3. Click Settings.

4. In the Gift cards section, select one of the following options in Type to issue:

   • Digital to sell or accept payments from digital gift cards that you can print and email to customers.
   • Digital or physical to sell or accept payments from both digital and physical gift cards.

5. Click Save.

Physical gift cards are pre-made plastic cards with pre-assigned codes on them. To issue a physical gift card, you must first activate the setting to issue physical gift cards. You can scan the gift card's QR code or barcode in Shopify POS at the time of purchase. Refer to selling gift cards on Shopify POS for the steps.

An online order for a gift card product produces a digital gift card on fulfillment, not a pre-printed physical card. Online orders aren't automatically linked to the QR code or barcode of a specific physical card, so pre-printed physical cards are issued only through Shopify POS.

You can choose your design and order customizable physical gift cards from the Shopify Hardware Store in supported countries.

Customers can redeem their gift cards on any of your sales channels that use Shopify checkout:
