Overview of managing discounts on Shopify POS
In Shopify POS, you can apply discounts when you've added items to the cart. You can apply a discount to the whole cart or individual line items, or a combination of both.

Types of discounts
Custom discounts are created at the time of the order and are flat dollar value or a percentage of the line item or entire cart value. You can apply custom discounts to specific line items or the entire cart. If your location has a Shopify POS Pro subscription, then you can process returns and exchanges, and apply custom discounts to exchange items.
You can also apply fixed value or percentage discount codes that you create in your Shopify admin, as long as all of the items in the cart meet the discount code's requirements. Discount codes can't be applied to exchanges on Shopify POS.
Eligible discounts can be combined, so that customers can benefit from all discounts that can be applied to their order. Learn more about discount combinations on POS.
Calculating line item custom discounts in the cart and on exchanges
When you apply a line item custom discount as a monetary amount in the cart, the discount applies per unit for that line item.
If your location has a Shopify POS Pro subscription, then you can process returns and exchanges and apply custom discounts to exchange items. Custom discounts on exchange items also apply per unit.
The following example explains how a monetary line item custom discount applies per unit in the cart and on exchange line items:
- You sell 2 T-shirts priced at $100 USD each, and the quantity of the product is 2, so the line item total before the discount is 2 × $100 USD = $200 USD.
- You enter $20 USD as the monetary amount for the line item custom discount.
- The discount applies as $20 USD per product unit, so 2 × $20 USD = $40 USD off the line item total.
- The customer is charged $200 USD − $40 USD = $160 USD.
Understanding Discount Functions for Shopify POS
If you currently use a third-party discount app to create and manage your discounts for your online store, then you can now use the same discounts on Shopify POS. You can use Discount Functions to extend your app code into Shopify POS checkout and create discounts that are offered through third-party discount apps, but not offered through Shopify.
Discount Functions can be added to your Shopify POS smart grid after they're published to the POS channel.
Understanding third-party app discounts
You can use third-party apps to create automatic discounts or discount codes that apply to your POS cart. A single app discount can apply savings to any combination of the following in the POS cart:
- Products
- Order subtotal
- Shipping and delivery costs
Discounts created through third-party apps will always apply to both your online store and the POS sales channel. You can't control which sales channels third-party app discounts display in, and you can't restrict or turn off access for specific channels. This applies to both automatic discounts and discount codes created by third-party apps, even if sales channels are edited in bulk or from the Discounts page.
