Customize your Shopify POS customer display screens

You can customize the customer display screens of your Shopify POS using the POS editor in the Shopify admin. The customer display screens are displayed to your customers from the Shopify POS Terminal or customer-facing tablet.

Customer display screens include the following screens:

  • The idle screen, which displays to customers when there's no active transaction in progress.
  • The checkout screens, which display to customers during the checkout process and include the cart details, receipt options, and thank you screens.

The customizations that you make to the POS customer display screens apply to all POS devices at all locations.

Customizing your POS idle screen

You can customize your POS idle screen with a foreground image or text, background, and payment options in the Shopify admin.

Add a foreground image or text to the POS idle screen

You can customize your POS idle screen with your store branding in the Shopify admin. You can add a foreground image or add customizable text. Foreground images must be a SVG, PNG, or WEBP file, and must be a minimum of 512 pixels. Text-based foregrounds display up to 250 characters, and you can't resize the text or select a different font.

Steps:

Image

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Point of Sale > Settings.

  2. In the Customization section, click Customer display to open the POS editor.

  3. In the Views section, select Idle screen.

  4. In the Foreground section, select Image, and then do any of the following actions:

    • To add a foreground image, click Select image to choose an image file, and then click Done.
    • To change an existing foreground image, click Change > Select image. Choose a new image file, and then click Done.
    • To remove a foreground image, click Change > Remove.

  5. Optional: To preview your customized idle screen on different device types, click the Preview options menu, and then select the type of device (tablet or POS Terminal) that you want to use.

  6. Click Save to save the foreground image to your idle screen.

Text

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Point of Sale > Settings.

  2. In the Customization section, click Customer display to open the POS editor.

  3. In the Views section, select Idle screen.

  4. In the Foreground section, select Text.

  5. In the Text field, add the text that you want to display.

  6. In the Color menu, click the color picker and adjust the selected color or add a HEX code to select a new text color.

  7. Optional: To preview your customized idle screen on different device types, click the Preview options menu, and then select the type of device (tablet or POS Terminal) that you want to use.

  8. Click Save to save the foreground text to your idle screen.

Add a background to the POS idle screen

You can add an image or select a solid color to use as your background for the idle screen on your POS. Background images must be a PNG or JPEG, and should be 1080 x 1920 pixels in size.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Point of Sale > Settings.

  2. In the Customization section, click Customer display to open the POS editor.

  3. In the Views section, select Idle screen.

  4. In the Background section, click Image.

  5. To manage your background image, do any of the following actions:

    • To add a background image, click Image > Select image, and then to choose an image file. Click Done.
    • To change an existing background image, click Change > Select image. Choose a new image file, and then click Done.
    • To remove a background image, click Change > Remove.

  6. Adjust the Overlay opacity setting to change how dark your background is on the idle screen.

  7. Optional: To preview your customized idle screen on different device types, click the Preview options menu, and then select the type of device (tablet or POS Terminal) that you want to use.

  8. Click Save to save the background image to your idle screen.

Color

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Point of Sale > Settings.

  2. In the Customization section, click Customer display to open the POS editor.

  3. In the Views section, select Idle screen.

  4. In the Background section, do the following steps:

    1. Click Color.
    2. Click the color menu, and then use the color picker or add a HEX code to select a new color.

  5. Optional: To preview your customized idle screen on different device types, click the Preview options menu, and then select the type of device (tablet or POS Terminal) that you want to use.

  6. Click Save to save the background color to your idle screen.

Add payment options to the POS idle screen

To display payment options on the POS idle screen, you must be using Shopify Payments. All credit cards are accepted in the POS app by using card readers.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Point of Sale > Settings.

  2. In the Customization section, click Customer display to open the POS editor.

  3. In the Views section, select Idle screen.

  4. Activate the Show card brands setting.

  5. Optional: To preview your customized idle screen on different device types, click the Preview options menu, and then select the type of device (tablet or POS Terminal) that you want to use.

  6. Click Save to save the payment icons to your idle screen.

Customizing your POS checkout screens

The POS checkout screens consist of the following screens:

  • Cart summary, which displays to the customer as the cart is created and items are added.
  • Receipts, which displays to the customer after the payment is accepted and lets them choose which receipt option they prefer.
  • Thank you, which displays to the customer after selecting a receipt option and completing the transaction.

You can customize the design elements and color theme for each of these screens.

Important Note: If merchants see "Failed to save -- Please try again" error when attempting to change the Checkout screen color, this is due to incomplete Shopify Payments setup. The issue is resolved by completing Shopify Payments setup.

Display product images on the cart checkout screen

You can choose to display or hide product images on the cart checkout screen by using the Customer display editor. By default, product images are displayed, but you can deactivate the setting at any time.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Point of Sale > Settings.

  2. In the Customization section, click Customer display to open the POS editor.

  3. In the Views section, select Checkout > Cart summary.

  4. Activate or deactivate the Show product images setting.

  5. Optional: To preview your customized cart screen on different device types, click the Preview options menu, and then select the type of device (tablet or POS Terminal) that you want to use.

  6. Click Save to save the changes to your cart screen.

Customize the message on the Thank you checkout screen

By default, the POS Thank you screen displays a "Thank you!" message at the end of the in-person transaction. You can customize the message that displays to customers using the POS editor in the Shopify admin.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Point of Sale > Settings.

  2. In the Customization section, click Customer display to open the POS editor.

  3. In the Views section, select Checkout > Thank you.

  4. In the Message field, add a custom message.

  5. Optional: To preview your customized Thank you screen on different device types, click the Preview options menu, and then select the type of device (tablet or POS Terminal) that you want to use.

  6. Click Save to save the changes to your Thank you screen.

Adjust color scheme on all POS checkout screens

You can select a primary color, used as the main background color, and an accent color, used for buttons and highlights on the tip and receipt selection screens. The color theme applies to all checkout screens (Cart summary, Receipts, and Thank you).

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Point of Sale > Settings.

  2. In the Customization section, click Customer display to open the POS editor.

  3. In the Views section, select Checkout.

  4. Next to Background color, click the color menu, and then use the color picker or add a HEX code to select a new color.

  5. Optional: To preview your customized checkout screens on different device types, click the Preview options menu, and then select the type of device (tablet or POS Terminal) that you want to use.

  6. Click Save to save the changes to your checkout screens.
