Retail markets overview and requirements

Before using Retail markets, review the considerations for using Retail markets and how inheritance works in Markets.

Considerations for using Retail markets

Review the following considerations before using Retail markets:

  • Company-specific prices for B2B markets aren't available for retail purchases. If a customer has access to B2B pricing for a company location, then they can't access those prices through Shopify POS, and need to purchase from your online store instead.
  • Using Retail markets with Shopify POS requires the app version 10.3.0 or higher.

Currency, markets, and business entities

Multi-currency in Shopify POS depends on how many business entities you have set up in your Shopify admin with Shopify Payments activated:

  • One business entity: Shopify POS transactions process in your store’s default currency. Retail markets still control catalog and price rules for your retail locations, but they don’t change the processing currency for Shopify POS when you have a single entity.
  • Multiple business entities: The entity assigned to each retail location determines the currency for Shopify POS at that location, including how the location maps to its Retail market. Selling with multiple entities is available only on the Shopify Plus plan and Shopify Enterprise Commerce plan.

To process in-person card payments using integrated card readers in a country’s local currency, the entity for that location must use a default payout currency that matches the country and currency requirements for that country. Your payment processor also applies rules for in-person sales in that region.

Shopify plan considerations for Retail markets

Review the following considerations for using Retail markets with Shopify POS Lite:

  • Locations that are on Shopify POS Lite use Region markets only. You assign catalogs to a Region market to control which products are available and which prices apply in that region. Your retail locations and your online store in that region use the same catalog settings.
    • For example, if you create a Region market for the United States and a Region market for Canada, then retail locations in each country receive product pricing, assortment, and promotions from the same Region market as customers who shop on your online store in that region.
  • You can't apply different market settings to retail and online customers within the same region. Region markets apply in the same way to your online store and to retail locations in that region.
  • You can't create separate groups of retail locations in one region that each have different market configurations. All retail locations in a region share the same market treatment.

Review the following considerations for using Retail markets with Shopify POS Pro:

  • With Shopify POS Pro, you can create and use Retail markets and map markets to specific retail locations or groups of locations.
  • You can set different pricing for Shopify POS and for your online store in the same region.
  • You can set different pricing for different retail location types, such as flagship, outlet, or pop-up locations.
  • You can assign catalogs, pricing, and automatic discounts to specific location groups where your plan allows.

Inheritance

By default, submarkets inherit all the customizations from their parent market. However, you can override each of those inherited customizations to suit the submarket’s needs. Inheritance eliminates the need to start a new market from scratch. Refer to Creating, customizing, and managing markets to learn more about how market inheritance works.
