Settlement times for Shopify Payments in Japan
Settlement time refers to the amount of time between the moment that a customer's payment is captured and when those funds are available to be sent to your bank account. The timestamp for capturing a customer's payment is recorded in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Payments captured on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are consolidated and sent as a single payout.
For businesses located in Japan, you can set your regular payout day on any day between Monday and Friday, and you can choose to be paid weekly or monthly.
The settlement time is 5 days plus the number of days remaining until your payout day. For example, if your customer places an order in your store on a Wednesday, and your payout day is Friday, then the funds from that order are sent to your bank account on the Friday of the following week, 8 business days later. If your customer places an order in your store on a Sunday, then the funds from that order are sent to your bank account on the Friday of the same week, 5 business days later.
The minimum amount that can be paid out for Shopify Payments accounts in Japan is 5 JPY. If there's a payout for less than this amount, then the payout stays in pending state until more funds are available to pay out.

Negative balances and refunds
For Shopify Payments accounts in Japan, when a refund or chargeback occurs, Shopify doesn't debit your bank account. Instead, the negative amount remains on your account as a negative balance until future positive payouts bring the balance up to date.
This means:
- Refund transactions might display as pending even after being processed successfully.
- You might not receive payouts during the time that a negative balance exists.
- Future sales revenue is applied to the negative balance first.

Troubleshoot payout issues
Before contacting Shopify Support, review the following common payout issues and their solutions.
| Issue | Possible cause | How to check | Solution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payout failed | Bank account name mismatch | Check the Payouts page for the specific error message displayed on the failed payout. | Japanese banks are extremely particular about names, which must match the bank's records exactly. Confirm the exact account holder name format with your bank, then update your bank account information. |
| Payout failed | Incorrect account number | Verify your account number on your bank book (通帳) or online banking portal. | If your account number is 6 digits, then try adding a 0 at the beginning. Update your bank account information with the correct number. |
| Payout failed | Unsupported account type | Confirm with your bank whether you have a Futsu (普通預金) account. | If you have a Toza (当座預金) account and no Futsu account is available, then contact Shopify Support for manual configuration. |
| No payouts for extended period | Negative balance from refunds or chargebacks | Go to Settings > Payments > Manage and review your Payout balance. Check the Payouts page for pending negative amounts. | In Japan, negative balances aren't debited. Future positive payouts are applied to the balance first. No action is needed—payouts resume when your balance becomes positive. |
| Payout shows "pending" after bank change | Processing delay after bank account update | Review the date you changed your bank account details. | The system requires 3-5 business days to connect a new bank account. Wait for the processing period to complete. |

Frequently asked questions
Review the following frequently asked questions about Shopify Payments payouts in Japan.
Why is my payout failing?
Payouts in Japan most commonly fail due to bank account name mismatches. Japanese banks are extremely particular about names, which must match the bank's records exactly. Verify that the name format you entered matches what your bank has on file, including whether abbreviated corporate designations are used.
If the name matches and payouts still fail, then contact your bank to confirm:
- Your account type is Futsu (普通預金)
- Your account can receive Zengin transfers
- Your account is active and in good standing
Can I use a Toza (当座預金) account?
Toza accounts can be used for Shopify Payments, but only when a Futsu account isn't available. If you have only a Toza account, then contact Shopify Support before setting up your payout account. Toza accounts require manual configuration and can take up to a month to activate.
Why haven't I received payouts even though transfers are enabled?
If you haven't received payouts but your account displays as enabled, then review your payout transactions for refunds or chargebacks. In Japan, Shopify doesn't debit your bank account for negative balances. Instead, the negative amount must be offset by future positive transactions before payouts resume.
What's the chargeback fee in Japan?
The chargeback fee for Shopify Payments in Japan is ¥1,300 (approximately $13 USD). If you win the chargeback dispute, then the fee is refunded.
My refund transactions display as "pending"—is there a problem?
No. In Japan, refunds can display as pending because Shopify doesn't debit your bank account. The refund is processed successfully, but the transaction status updates only when the negative balance is cleared by future positive payouts.
Tax reporting
As a merchant, you're required to abide by all applicable regulations, including tax reporting. Depending on your jurisdiction, Shopify Payments can also be required to report your sales to the local tax authorities.
