Failed Shopify Payments payouts

If a Shopify Payments payout fails, you'll be notified via email, an alert in your Shopify admin, and a push notification on mobile devices. The payout also gets marked as Failed on the payout page. A payout failure can lead to an immediate payout hold, or a hold after multiple consecutive failures related to bank account issues.

Resolving failed payouts

When a payout fails, there's a Failed payout message on the Payouts page that explains why the payout failed, and what you can do to resolve the issue. If the payout failed due to a problem with your bank account details, then you can click Update bank account in the Payouts page to change your details.

Review the following table to learn more about why payouts can fail and how to resolve them:

Invalid account typeReview the Shopify Payments bank account requirements for your region. If your bank account isn't a supported type, then update to an account that is supported. An example of an unsupported bank account type is a savings account.
Incorrect beneficiary or payee nameThe beneficiary or payee name on your payout is based on your Shopify Payments account information and registered business type. If the name on the payout doesn't match the name on your bank account, then your bank might reject the payout.

Update your bank account details to make sure that the bank account holder name matches the name registered with your bank. If you're unable to view the bank account holder name in your Shopify admin, then contact Shopify Support for help.
Insufficient funds to cover a negative payoutIf you're located in a region with payout withdrawals, and there are insufficient funds in your bank account to cover a negative payout amount due to a refund or chargeback, then the negative payout fails. The debit is attempted two additional times before payouts to that bank account are paused, per regulatory guidelines. To prevent failures, add sufficient funds to the connected bank account and confirm using the “I’ve added funds” button on the error message or update your bank account details for Shopify Payments.
Bank account isn't set up for withdrawalsIf you're located in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United States, and your bank account isn't set up to accept withdrawals, then payouts fail. Contact your bank to allow withdrawals for the account and confirm this update from the banner on the payout page.

Alternatively, you can replace your bank account with one that is set up to accept withdrawals. Learn more about refunds and negative balances.
Bank account can't process payoutsThe bank has rejected this payout for an unspecified reason. Replace your bank account or reach out to your bank directly to resolve the issue.

If your current bank account information is correct, and you're unsure why a payout failed, then contact your bank to investigate the issue.

If a Managed Markets payout fails and your banking information is correct, then the payout is automatically retried within the next 72 hours. If the payout fails again, then contact your bank to investigate the issue.

Retrying failed payouts

After you resolve the reason for the failed payout, you can reactivate payouts on the Payouts page. If you replace your bank account, payouts are automatically reactivated.

If the underlying problem isn't solved before reactivation, then payouts continue to fail.
