Required personal and business information for activating Shopify Payments in Germany
If you've registered with the Chamber of Commerce and have an Handelsregister Abteilung B (HRB) or Handelsregister Abteilung A (HRA) number, then you can select one of the incorporated business types available: private corporation, registered partnership, or registered non-profit.
If you've a registered business, but don't have an HRB or HRA number, then select your business type based on the following guidance:
- General partnerships without HRB/HRA numbers can select Unincorporated partnership.
- Non-profit organizations and charities who don't have HRB or HRA numbers can select Unregistered non-profit.
If none of the above options apply to your business, then you should select Individual / Sole Proprietor as your business type.
If you aren't sure what business type to pick, then contact Shopify Support for help with selecting the right one.
Individuals / Sole Proprietors
Individuals are single owner businesses that haven't registered with the government and are doing business privately. Sole proprietors are single owner businesses who are registered with the government under their personal information. Both are businesses that are owned and controlled by one individual living in Germany. This includes freelancers and self-employed small business operators.
These business types are treated the same way and must provide the same information. Individuals and sole proprietors must provide:
- Legal first and last name: Your full legal name as it appears on government-issued documentation.
- Date of birth: Your birth date.
- Email address: A valid and active email address.
- Phone number: A valid and active phone number.
- Residential address in Germany: Your home address, matching your documentation.
If your information can't be verified automatically, then you'll receive a request to verify your identity. If any of your information such as your name, date of birth, or home address, is incorrect, then you should update your account information.
If the information is correct and you still receive a request for verification, then you can resolve the request by completing either one of the following tasks:
- Confirm your identity by taking a selfie with a valid photo ID.
- Upload separate proof of identity and proof of address documents in your Shopify admin.
- The information on your documents must match what you enter on your account exactly. Update your account information to match your documents if needed.
Private Corporations (GmbH, UG)
A private corporation is a business whose equity is divided into shares, owned by shareholders. A corporation is considered its own legal entity, separate from the people who run it. They typically also have a board of directors.
Private corporations must assign either a beneficial owner or an executive with decision making power as their account representative. The account representative must provide the following information:
- Legal first and last name: Your full legal name as it appears on government-issued documentation.
- Date of birth: Your birth date.
- Email address: A valid and active email address.

When providing this document, ensure that the registered name, HRB, and business address listed in your account matches exactly with the information on the document. Update the information in your account to match the document if necessary.
You must additionally list any other people who are beneficial owners of the business. Ensure you enter their names, dates of birth, and home addresses exactly as shown on their government documents. If their identities can't be verified automatically, then they might need to provide photo ID or proof of address.
The owners you provide must match against the owners listed in your government's business registry. If a mismatch is detected, you'll be asked to either complete the attestation process by clicking the "sign" button, or provide a proof of ownership document. Signing the attestation is fast and simple, but if you'd prefer to submit a document, ensure the names of the owners listed on your account matches exactly with the owners listed on your document. Update the information on your account to match your document, if necessary. If your business is owned by a holding company (either wholly or partly), sign the attestation to complete verification.
If your business has no owners you'll be asked to either sign an attestation, or provide a document confirming your directors instead. Unincorporated Partnerships (GbR)
An unincorporated partnership is a business owned by at least two partners who haven't registered for an HRA, but who have a partnership agreement. The owners are considered the legal entity in this case, and the business is not a separate entity. A common form of unincorporated partnership is Gesellschaft bürgerlichen Rechts (GbR).

Ensuring documentation compliance
When providing your documents, ensure that they meet the necessary criteria. Review the following guidelines to ensure compliance:
- Accuracy: Ensure that the information on your documents matches what you've entered in your Shopify Payments account. Update your account to match your documents, if necessary.
- Clarity and legibility: Make sure that your documents are clear and large enough to read. Ensure the entire document is visible in the photograph.
- Completeness: Ensure all the necessary details are visible on your document. Review the acceptable document types listed on this page to understand what details must be included on the document.
- Original documentation: Take an original photograph of your document using a camera. Don't photocopy, scan, or screenshot your documents. Don't paste photos of documents into other documents. Don't take photos of computer screens or printouts.
- If your document was issued to you digitally, then provide the PDF file with all pages as it was originally given to you, with no alterations.
- Validity: Ensure photo IDs aren't expired and that proof of address is recently issued. If providing proof of business registration, then your business should still be actively registered and in good standing.
Troubleshooting common issues
Before contacting Shopify Support, review these common onboarding issues and their solutions.
My payment is showing as pending.
Check the order's timeline to confirm whether the payment was successful. If the status shows as failed, then you'll need to create a new draft order and send it to your customer to capture the funds.
My payouts are failing with a virtual bank account.
Virtual bank accounts such as Revolut and Payoneer are accepted for payouts, but have a higher payout failure rate than traditional bank accounts. If your payouts are failing, then consider using a standard bank account instead.
I can't dispute an iDEAL | Wero transaction.
Customers can't dispute iDEAL | Wero payments with their bank. For full details on how iDEAL | Wero disputes and complaints work, and your responsibilities as a merchant, refer to Customer disputes and complaints on the iDEAL | Wero page.
I don't have an HRB/HRA number, and I'm not an individual or sole proprietorship.
If you don't have an HRB/HRA number, then you can only select Unincorporated partnership or Unregistered non-profit as your business type. You must still provide documentation that shows your business is registered as said business type in Germany.
If neither of these business types fits your business, then select the Individual / Sole Proprietorship business type and assign a key decision maker or owner as the account representative.
My document was rejected.
Ensure the information on your Shopify Payments account matches the information in the document you're submitting, and update your account to match your documentation if needed. If your documents are still being rejected, then refer to the following sections on this page:
- Acceptable document types: Which documents are accepted and what details they must include. Screenshots, printouts of online searches, and registry screenshots aren't accepted.
- Ensuring documentation compliance: Requirements for accuracy, clarity, completeness, original documentation, and validity.
My business information isn't being verified.
When entering your business information, ensure that your business name, HRB/HRA number, and business address match exactly as they appear in your business registry. This includes:
- Correct letter case (uppercase and lowercase)
- Correct punctuation and spacing
- Complete business name as registered
Shopify banking partners verify your information automatically by comparing it against official registries in Germany. Even small differences can cause verification to fail. Ensure the documentation you're submitting includes the legal name, HRB/HRA number, and business address, and that these details match what appears on your account. Update your account to match your document, if necessary.
My address can't be automatically verified.
For Shopify Payments Germany, if your address can't be automatically verified, then you'll be asked to either complete the selfie process, or to provide a proof of address document.
Completing the selfie process is recommended: The individual who requires verification can click the "selfie" button and then take a photograph of their photo ID, and themselves, in order to verify. This can be done instead of providing a proof of address document.
If you would prefer to provide a document manually, you can do that instead. Proof of address documents must show your full name, home address, and be one of the document types shown here. You should also ensure:
- Ensure the address you entered in your Shopify Payments account matches exactly with the address on your proof of address document.
- Update your information in your account to match your document if necessary.
- Upload a clear photograph of your proof of address document.
- Ensure the document you're uploading shows your own full name. If for example, you have a utility bill in someone else's name, you'll need to provide a different document.
My owner information can't be verified.
For Shopify Payments Germany, you're required to enter your owners so that the names listed match against the owners listed for your business on your government's business registry. We recommend looking up your owner information in the registry and entering the names as exactly shown there. If you have no owners, you must list all of your directors on the account instead.
If you have done so and your ownership or directorship still cannot be verified, we recommend clicking the "sign" button on your verification page to digitally attest that the information you have provided is correct. This process is fast and simple.
If you would prefer you can provide a document confirming who your owners or directors are, instead of using the attestation process. The owner and/or director information that you enter on your Shopify Payments account must match the information on the documentation that you upload. If an owner/director is listed on your documentation, but isn't added to your Shopify Payments account, then you must add that person to your account and assign them the Owner and/or Director role. A list of what types of documents you can provide to verify ownership is available here.
You should make sure the owners and directors on your account are a 1:1 match with your documentation. Do not list extra owners/directors that are not shown on your documents.
Frequently asked questions
Review these frequently asked questions about Shopify Payments requirements in Germany.
Why do you need my photo ID and proof of address if I'm a company, partnership, or non-profit?
Even if you're set up as a company, partnership, or non-profit, Shopify banking partners are required by regulations in Germany to verify the identities of the people associated with the business, including who they are and where they're located.
I'm a citizen of Germany and was born there, but I don't currently live in Germany. Can I use Shopify Payments in Germany?
If your business type is Individual / Sole Proprietor, then you're required to live in Germany to be eligible for Shopify Payments in Germany. If you don't currently live in Germany, then you should create a Shopify Payments account for the region where you do live.
Update your store address to your current location. If your location is eligible for Shopify Payments, then you can create a Shopify Payments account for that region instead.
If you're a partnership, company, or non-profit, then you're not required to personally live in Germany, but your business must be registered in Germany and have a German business address. If you need help, then contact Shopify Support.
I'm a GbR (Gesellschaft bürgerlichen Rechts) and I don't have an HRB/HRA number. What should I do?
If you're a GbR but are being asked for an HRB/HRA number, then you're set up as the incorrect business type. If you're in the process of setting up the account, then go back to the business type selection and select Unincorporated partnership. For details on what Unincorporated Partnerships need to provide, refer to the Unincorporated Partnerships (GbR) section on this page.
If you've already set up the account and are being asked for an HRB/HRA number as part of your verification process, then you can update your business type by going to Settings > General. Click the 3 dots beside your business details, and then click "edit". If you have any difficulty with updating your business type, contact Shopify Support for assistance.
I'm a registered sole proprietorship. How can I provide you with my business information?
If you're a sole proprietor, then you should select Individual / Sole Proprietor as your business type. Selecting a different option such as Company or Partnership might cause difficulties during account verification, as these types are verified differently. For details on what Individuals are required to provide, refer to the Individuals / Sole Proprietors section on this page.
Will I be charged VAT on my Shopify Payments processing fees?
No. VAT isn't charged on Shopify Payments processing fees in Germany.
How do I update my Shopify Payments account information?
If you are actively being asked to complete account verification, then you can make any updates to your information from in the verification page along with submitting any documents that are being requested.
Outside of the verification process, the account owner of the store can update these details through Settings > General > Business Details. Click the three dots beside your business entity and then click "edit" to update that business's information, including business type.
Note that any changes you make here are automatically sent to our banking partners for review, and the new information is re-run through their verification process. It's possible the changes automatically re-verify, but you may also be asked for supporting documents.
If you have an outstanding Shopify Germany Capital loan, then you may not be able to update some of your business information until after the loan is completely paid off first. Your loan was issued to the business currently on file, so it cannot be transferred to a different business. Contact Shopify Support if you have questions.
What happens if I miss my verification deadline?
You will see a temporary pause on your payouts until the verification procedure is completed. After the first deadline is hit and payouts are temporarily paused, you may see a second deadline indicating when your ability to accept orders with Shopify Payments will be temporarily paused.
All of these pauses are temporary, and will be automatically lifted once you complete verification. Reference your admin page for your deadlines.
Starting in June of 2026, brand new Shopify Payments Germany accounts have 90 days from first order processed to complete verification. If 90 days pass, any orders you processed using Shopify Payments may be automatically refunded.
This only applies to European countries, and it only applies to brand new accounts created on or after June of 2026. If this is applicable to you, warnings will tell your account owner when they can expect the refunds to process.
