Post-purchase marketing automations in Shop
If you have direct selling activated in the Shop channel, then you can create a post-purchase offer that gives returning customers an in-app discount that they can use at your store. You can have only 1 active post-purchase offer at a time.
The discount offer stays visible in the Shop app until any of the following conditions are met:
- All of the discount code conditions are fulfilled, such as a limit to 1 use per customer.
- The discount code expires or is deleted.
- The post-purchase automation is deactivated or deleted.
When creating conditions for your discount, you can't restrict the discount code to apply only to specific customers, groups of customers, collections, or products.
You can offer the following in-app discount types to Shop customers:
- Free shipping
- Fixed amount
- Percentage

Create a post-purchase offer automation
To create a post-purchase offer automation, you need to activate the automation with a discount code. For accurate tracking, create a discount code that you'll use only for that post-purchase offer automation. You can change the discount code at any time as long as the automation is active.
Steps:
From your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Shop.
In the Marketing section, click Create offer.
Optional: If you don't have a discount set up, then click Create a discount code, and configure the discount code that you want to offer.
In the Activity details section, enter an Activity name.
In the How it works section, configure the following elements:
- To select a discount, use the Discount search bar or click Browse. Select the discount that you want to use, and then click Add.
- Optional: Click Select image to upload a background image. To avoid image cropping, use an image that's 933 x 480 pixels.
- Optional: In the Message field, enter a message that displays to customers on your offer.
- Optional: In the Push notification field, enter the text that displays to customers in push notifications for your offer.
Review the Preview of activity, and then click Publish activity.
Editing, pausing, or deleting an existing post-purchase offer
After you create a post-purchase offer automation, you can edit, pause, or delete the automation. After pausing an offer, you can resume it at any time.
Review the following considerations before editing, pausing, or deleting a post-purchase offer:
- You can have only 1 active offer at a time. To change your offer, you can either edit the offer, or delete it and create a new offer.
- If you pause or delete a post-purchase offer automation when there's an active discount code that hasn't been used by a customer, then the customer can still use the discount code unless you delete the discount code from your Shopify admin.
- If a customer has an active discount code from a post-purchase offer that they haven't used, then their offer won't be updated if you edit it, and they won't receive new post-purchase offers.
- Deleting an automation resets performance metrics for all of your post-purchase offer automations.
Steps:
From your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Shop.
In the Marketing section, click Manage offer.
On the Post Purchase Offers Automation page, do any of the following actions:
- To edit the offer, edit any of the fields in the automation, and then click Save.
- To pause the offer temporarily, click Pause activity.
- To resume a previously paused offer, click Resume activity.
- To delete the offer permanently, click Delete activity.
Automatically paused post-purchase offers
A post-purchase offer automation is automatically paused when any of the following occur:
- The discount code is deleted.
- The discount code expires.
- An unsupported discount type is selected.
- You don't meet the Shop merchant requirements.
If your post-purchase offer campaign is paused, then you receive an email asking you to create a new discount code to add to the automation in the Shop channel.
Viewing analytics for post-purchase offers
After you create an automation, you can use the Shop channel to review performance metrics. You can access these metrics on a 30-day rolling basis. They include the following information:
- Which customers received the offer.
- The number of orders made using the discount code.
- The number of sales associated with the offer.
You can't access these metrics from the Marketing page of your Shopify admin.
