Create a rollout

You can create a new rollout from the Markets > Rollouts page of your Shopify admin, and then add changes and details to your rollout.

To create a rollout, follow these steps:

  1. Create and name your rollout.
  2. Add one or more changes to your rollout.
  3. Configure the details of your rollout.

Before you start

Depending on the type of change that you want to add to your rollout, you need to make some changes to the relevant area of your Shopify admin before you create the rollout. Review the following considerations for adding a change to a rollout:

  • If you want edit your main theme, then you need to save the rollout before you can make edits to your main theme.
    • You can only edit your main theme. Make sure your main theme is the theme that you want to edit.
  • If you want to replace your main theme, then you need to add that theme to your online store first. You can still edit the replacement theme after you add it to the rollout.
  • If you want to replace your checkout and accounts configuration, then you'll need to create the configuration first. You can still edit the replacement configuration after you add it to the rollout.

Step 1: Create and name the rollout

First, create and name your rollout. Depending on the changes that you want to add, you might need to save your rollout before you can add changes.

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Markets > Rollouts.

  2. Click Create rollout.

  3. In the Name section, add a name for the new rollout, such as Summer Sale 2026.

Step 2: Add changes to your rollout

You can add only one of each of following types of changes to a rollout:

If you want to replace your main theme, then you can also update the replacement theme's content using a compatible translation app, such as the Translate & Adapt app.

Steps:

  1. In your rollout, click Add changes to your store.
  2. Optional: If you want to edit your main theme, then click Save to save your rollout.
  3. Select the type of change that you want to add from the following options:
    • Click Online store theme and then select either of the following options:
      • In the Make changes to your main theme section,
        1. Click Edit.
        2. In the theme editor, customize your theme.
        3. Click Save.
      • Click Or replace your main theme with another, and then select a new theme.
    • Click Checkouts and accounts to add a checkouts and accounts change:
      1. Click Replace your current configuration with another.
      2. Select a configuration.
  4. Optional: Click Plus circle Add more changes

Step 3: Configure the rollout details

After you add changes to your rollout, you can configure the details for your rollout, such as the start and end date of the rollout.

Configure the launch reach percentage

Select the percentage of visitors to launch the rollout to. This percentage applies to all changes in your rollout. If the rollout launches to less then 100% of visitors, then you must also select a start date and an end date. If the launch react is set to 100%, then you can launch the rollout immediately.

Steps:

  1. Click Changes will publish to all visitors.
  2. In the dialog, use the slider or enter a number to change the percentage.

Configure the launch date and time

You can schedule the rollout to start and end at a future date and time. The timezone is set to your store's timezone in Settings > General. If you add a start date, then you must also add an end date.

You can also launch your rollout immediately. To launch a rollout immediately, the launch reach must be set to 100%. This setting applies the changes in your rollout permanently for all eligible visitors. If you have any unended rollouts with changes to the same resource, and you want to publish a new theme or checkout and accounts configuration, then you must first archive the other rollouts.

Steps:

  1. Click Select launch date and time.
  2. In the dialog, select or enter a date.
  3. Optional: Select Launch immediately to launch your rollout immediately.
  4. Click Done.

Configure the end date, time, and action

After you configure the start date and time of the rollout, select the action that occurs when the rollout ends. You can choose to revert the rollout, or to apply it permanently. By default, the rollout reverts. No changes are applied permanently to the affected resource.

You can choose to permanently apply a rollout's changes when it ends. If the rollout has the Draft, or Scheduled status, then you can edit the rollout's configuration details and select the Will be applied permanently option. If the rollout is active, and you want to end it before it's scheduled time, then you can manually end the rollout instead.

If you have any unended rollouts with changes to the same resource, and you want to publish a new theme or checkout and accounts configuration, then you must first archive the other rollouts.

Steps:

  1. Click Add end date.
  2. Optional: Click Will roll back to 0% > Will be applied permanently to apply the rollout permanently after it ends.
  3. Click Select end date and time.
  4. In the dialog, select or enter a date and time.
  5. Click Done.

Create an experiment

To create an experiment, in the Change section, select a percentage of eligible visitors to display the changes to. This turns the rollout into an experiment. Learn more about the different types of rollouts.

Steps:

  1. In the Change section, click the percentage for 100% of eligible visitors will see this.
  2. Adjust the percentage using one of the preset options or by using the slider.

Editing your main theme in the theme editor

Any customizations that you make in the theme editor apply to only that rollout. Areas of your theme that aren't customized in a rollout automatically stay synchronized with customizations made to your published theme. If you have multiple rollouts, or want to make edits to your published theme, then you can select a different option from the rollouts menu in the theme editor's menu bar.

If you have more than one market, then you can select specific markets to apply the changes to. Learn more about creating and managing markets and customizing your theme for specific markets.

If you have any unended with main theme customizations, and want to publish a new main theme, then you must archive all unended rollouts first. You can't unarchive or restart an archived rollout, and archiving a rollout permanently deletes the rollout's theme customizations.

Considerations for theme edits

Review the following considerations for adding main theme edits to a rollout:

  • You can't apply rollouts to vintage themes.
  • You can’t change Liquid templates as part of a rollout.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.

  2. Next to your main theme, click Rollouts.

  3. Click the name of the rollout that you want to customize, or search for a rollout.

  4. In the theme editor, customize your theme.

  5. Click Save.

Editing theme content

If you add a theme replacement change to your rollout, then you can also update the replacement theme's content and translations using a compatible translation app, such as the Translate & Adapt app.

You can't update your replacement theme's languages and translations for a rollout using any of the following methods:

  • Adding manual translations.
  • Uploading translations with a CSV.
  • Using an incompatible translation app. Compatible apps must use Shopify's Admin API. If you aren't sure whether your translation app is compatible, then contact the app's developers to confirm whether the app uses the correct API.
  • Editing default theme content from the theme editor by clicking Horizontal menu > Edit default theme content.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Apps > Translate & Adapt.

  2. Select any category in the Theme section.

  3. Click the theme selector.

  4. In the Rollouts section, click the theme that you want to edit.

  5. Make any adjustments to the theme content for any language.

  6. Click Save.
