Remove a store from an organization

If your store or organization is on a pricing plan other than Shopify Plus, then you can remove a store from an organization from the Settings > General page of your Shopify admin. If you want to move the store to a different organization, then you can group the store to a different organization or transfer the store to a new owner instead.

Considerations

Before you remove a store from your organization, review the following considerations:

  • After you remove a store from an organization, the billing payment method is removed. Update your billing payment method to ensure your store's billing isn't interrupted.
  • Organization roles aren't retained if a store is no longer part of an organization. The organization owner can set these roles up again in the store after it's removed from the organization.
  • As an organization owner, you can have stores owned by other users in your organization. When you remove a store from an organization, the store owner remains the same as it was in the organization. If you prefer to be the store owner, then you need to change ownership of the store to your account.
  • If the store you remove is the only store in the organization, then the organization is deleted.

User permission requirements

Troubleshooting store removal

If you encounter issues when removing a store from an organization, then review the following common problems and solutions.

Troubleshoot missing Remove store option

If you can't find the Remove store from organization option, then verify the following factors:

  • Confirm you have the required user permissions to remove stores.
  • Make sure your store isn't on the Shopify Plus plan. Shopify Plus stores require contacting Shopify Plus Support for store removal.
  • Check that your store is actually part of an organization. Standalone stores don't display this option.

To verify your permissions:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Users and permissions.
  2. Confirm your account has the Organization administrator role or Stores organization permission.
Troubleshoot billing issues after removal

If you experience billing issues after removing a store from an organization:

  1. Go to Settings > Billing in the removed store's admin.
  2. Check if a payment method is on file. If not, add one immediately to prevent service interruption.
  3. Review any pending charges that might have transferred with the store.
  4. If you find unexpected charges, then confirm whether they were incurred before or after the store was removed from the organization.
Troubleshoot removing the last store

If you're trying to remove the last store from an organization, be aware that removing it deletes the entire organization.

Before you proceed:

  • Confirm you want to delete the organization entirely.
  • Ensure you've exported any organization-level data you need to retain.
  • Review any organization-level settings or user permissions you might want to recreate later.

If you want to keep the organization, then you must have at least one store remaining. Consider creating a new store before removing the existing one.

Troubleshoot staff who lost access after removal

When a store is removed from an organization, staff members might lose access because:

  • Organization-level permissions don't transfer to the standalone store.
  • Users who only had organization access (not store-level access) lose access entirely.

To restore access:

  1. As the store owner, go to Settings > Users and permissions.
  2. Review which users need access to the store.
  3. Invite users who need store access but weren't previously added at the store level.
  4. Assign appropriate store permissions to each user.
Troubleshoot errors when removing a store

If you receive an error message when attempting to remove a store:

  1. Refresh your browser and try again.
  2. Clear your browser cache and cookies.
  3. Try using a different browser or incognito/private mode.
  4. Verify you have the required permissions to remove stores.
  5. If the error persists, then take a screenshot of the error message and contact Shopify Support.
