Managing your Shopify billing plan changes

You can change your Shopify plan at any time. Upgrading or downgrading your plan has billing implications, and some changes require specific permissions.

Billing options for changing your Shopify plan

You can switch to any plan that's currently available, as listed on Shopify's pricing page. If you're on a discontinued plan, then you can't switch back to it after changing plans or pausing your store.

Billing implications of upgrading your plan

Be aware of the following billing implications when you upgrade your plan:

  • Immediate billing: Upon upgrading your plan, you receive an immediate bill that covers only the subscription fee for your new plan.
  • Pending charges: The immediate bill doesn't cover any outstanding charges on your account. These charges are added separately and billed after they exceed your billing threshold or at the close of your billing cycle.
  • Immediate activation: Features associated with your new plan take effect immediately when you upgrade.
  • Prorated adjustments: Billing adjustments for your new plan are prorated from the upgrade date. This means any difference in cost is calculated based on the number of days remaining in your billing cycle.
  • Previous plan deductions: The cost of your previous plan is also prorated and subtracted from the total cost of your new plan during that month.
  • Annual cycle considerations: If you switch to an annual billing cycle, then a new billing cycle starts. If your new plan has a lower subscription fee, then you receive a prorated bill reflecting this reduction.
  • Shipping carrier information reset: If you switch from a monthly to an annual billing cycle on either the Basic or Grow plan, then your shipping carrier information resets. You need to re-enter this information for each shipping carrier.

Billing implications of downgrading your plan or changing your billing cycle

Be aware of the following billing implications when you downgrade your plan or change your billing cycle:

  • Pre-paid plans: Your Shopify plan is pre-paid, meaning that any changes to a lower plan take effect at the end of your current billing cycle.
  • End-of-cycle changes: Any modifications to your plan are implemented at the end of your current billing cycle, not immediately.
  • Changing billing cycles: If you switch from an annual billing cycle to a monthly one, then the change takes effect at the end of your existing annual cycle.
  • Shipping carrier information reset: If you switch from a monthly to an annual billing cycle on either the Basic or Grow plan, then your shipping carrier information resets. You need to re-enter this information for each carrier.

Examples:

  • Changing to the Basic plan: If you want to downgrade to the Basic plan, then the change takes effect at the end of your current billing cycle. You stay on your current plan until the billing cycle ends.
  • Changing to monthly payment cycle: If you request a change to a monthly payment cycle but are still charged the annual amount, then the switch occurs at the end of your current annual billing cycle. For example, if your annual billing cycle ends on October 31, then your account displays the annual charge until that date. Switching from annual billing to monthly might result in the loss of features or benefits included with your annual plan. To switch to monthly billing, contact Shopify Support before your annual cycle ends.

Required permissions for plan modifications

To modify your plan, either for an upgrade or a downgrade, the store owner or a staff member with the Manage plan permission must authorize the change.

Impact of upgrading during a free trial on your Shopify plan

If you upgrade your plan during a free trial, then it won't change the length of the trial or affect your store data. You won't be charged until your free trial ends. Learn more about trying Shopify with a free trial.

If you're on promotional pricing after your free trial ends, then refer to monthly plan promotional pricing for details on how plan changes interact with promotional offers.

Changing plans or billing cycles during a promotional trial

If you're on a promotional trial, then plan changes work differently than during a free trial:

  • Changing to a different plan tier: Your new plan takes effect immediately. The promotional pricing carries over for the remainder of the original promotional period and the end date doesn't reset. You receive a prorated invoice at the time of the change at the promotional price, not the new plan's full price. After the promotion ends, you pay the new plan's standard rate. If you change to a plan that the promotion doesn't cover, such as the Plus plan, then the promotional pricing doesn't apply to the new plan.
  • Changing from monthly to annual billing: The billing cycle change takes effect after the promotional trial ends. During the promotional trial, you continue to pay the promotional price per month. After the trial ends, the annual billing cycle starts and you're charged the full annual amount upfront.
  • Changing from annual to monthly billing: To make this change, go to Settings > Plan and select the monthly billing option. Review the billing cycle considerations before confirming the change.
