Refund Interac debit payments on Shopify POS

If a customer paid for their order using an Interac debit card, then you can refund the payment using Shopify POS. Refunds for Interac debit payments must be processed in person with the card that was used for the original purchase.

Considerations for Interac refunds and exchanges

Review the following considerations to confirm whether an Interac order can be refunded or exchanged before proceeding:

  • If the original order was paid for using multiple Interac debit payments or was split across one or more cards, then you can only exchange the order if the total of the new products is less than the original order amount. Exchanging for products that cost more than the original order is supported.
  • Orders that were exchanged before POS app version 7.0 can't be refunded or exchanged again. Current exchanges are processed within the same order, so you can refund or exchange them normally.

Refund Interac debit payments

Interac debit payments can only be refunded in person using Shopify POS with the debit card physically present. The customer must present the same card they used for the original payment to receive the refund. Interac debit payments can't be refunded in the Shopify admin.

Manually enter Interac debit refund amounts

In some cases, an Interac refund might fail, but the return processes successfully in Shopify POS. When this happens, the items are removed from the order, and the refund option appears unavailable because there are no items left to return.

To manually enter the refund amount, complete the following steps:

  1. From the order details, tap Edit next to Amount to refund.
  2. Enter the refund amount.
  3. Complete the refund process.

Exchanging orders paid with Interac

You can exchange orders that were paid for using Interac debit the same way you would exchange orders paid with other payment methods. Learn more about processing exchanges with Shopify POS.

Collecting additional funds for an exchange

If the customer owes additional funds after an exchange, then they can tap their Interac debit card on the card reader to complete the transaction. Contactless transaction limits for Interac debit still apply.

Refund remaining balance on an exchange

If you owe the customer remaining funds after an exchange, then they can tap their Interac debit card on the card reader to accept the refund. The customer can use any Interac debit card to accept the refund, regardless of which card was used for the original order.

Refund digital wallet payments

Orders paid for using digital wallets, such as Apple Pay or Google Pay, have specific refund requirements:

  • The customer must use the same device and card that was used for the original payment to accept the refund.
  • The customer can't tap a physical card to accept a refund for an order that was paid for using a digital wallet.

Troubleshooting contactless Interac debit refunds

If a contactless refund fails, then it might be because the refund amount exceeds the customer's contactless transaction limit.

If a contactless refund fails, then ask the customer to insert their card and enter their PIN to complete the refund.
