Requirements for using the BBPOS WisePad 3 Card Reader

To use the BBPOS WisePad 3 Card Reader, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You need to use the Shopify POS app.
  • Your payment provider is Shopify Payments, and test mode is turned off.
  • Your store and physical retail locations need to be based in a supported country for Shopify POS where the BBPOS WisePad 3 Card Reader is available to purchase.
  • Your store and physical retail locations need to be based in the same country.
  • Your store's currency needs to match the local currency of your physical store's location.
  • Your store's currency must match your Shopify Payments payout bank account currency.

Compatibility requirements for POS devices with BBPOS WisePad 3 Card Reader

You must use a compatible iPad or iPhone that is running iOS 15.1 or higher, or an Android device running version 10 or higher. Either type of device must support Bluetooth 4.2 or higher.

Shopify POS iOS and Android device compatibility requirements

Shopify POS is available for only iOS and Android devices. It's not available for laptop or desktop computers, or Amazon Fire tablets.

Shopify POS works with devices that meet the following requirements:

Shopify POS no longer supports iOS 14 or lower. With older versions of iOS, you can continue to use the app but you can no longer update it. To take advantage of bug fixes and new features, you need to update your device to iOS 15.1 or higher. If that isn't possible, then switch to using Shopify POS on another device that is running iOS 15.1 or higher.

iOS permission requirements

If you update your device to iOS 15.1 or higher and use third-party Shopify apps, then you might need to activate Cross-Website tracking in your iOS settings. Cross-Website tracking lets third-party Shopify apps that you install in your Shopify admin stay connected in Shopify Inbox, Shopify Point of Sale, and the Shopify app.

To activate Cross-Website tracking, complete the following steps:

  1. On your iOS device, open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Shopify, Shopify POS, or Shopify Inbox.
  3. Activate Allow Cross-Website Tracking.

Considerations for BBPOS WisePad 3 Card Reader

Review the following considerations before using the BBPOS WisePad 3 Card Reader:

Payment acceptance

  • No swipe capability: The BBPOS WisePad 3 Card Reader only accepts chip and contactless (tap) payments. It doesn't support swiped card payments. If you need to accept swipe payments, consider alternative card readers that support this payment method.

Geographic considerations

  • Country lock: When you purchase the BBPOS WisePad 3 Card Reader from a Shopify Hardware Store, the reader is locked to the country where it was purchased. To use the reader in a different supported country, you need to perform a pinhole reset to change the country setting.
  • Country lock in Canada: BBPOS WisePad 3 Card Readers purchased in Canada can't be used outside of Canada. Unlike other regions, this country lock can't be changed with a pinhole reset.
  • EU countries: If your store is based in a supported EU country and sells in EUR, then you can use your BBPOS WisePad 3 Card Reader in any other supported EU country without changing your country setting.
  • Country change requirements: When you change the country setting on your BBPOS WisePad 3 Card Reader, ensure that your store's location and currency comply with Shopify Payments location and currency requirements. Your store and physical retail locations must be in the same country, and your store's currency must match the local currency.
  • Norfolk Island not supported: The BBPOS WisePad 3 Card Reader isn't supported in Norfolk Island (NF), a territory of Australia. If your store is located in Norfolk Island, you need to use an alternative card reader.
