Managing your POS Apps

POS UI Extensions are a way to use apps to enhance and personalize your retail experience for Shopify POS.

For example, some extensions use the device scanner to complete stocktakes, scan loyalty or employee cards for discounts, or receive products in store.

You can use the POS editor in your Shopify admin to manage the extensions across your store locations.

There are multiple options available for developers to customize the Shopify POS app. Learn more about extending the capabilities of Shopify POS from Shopify's developer documentation.

Network requirements for POS UI Extensions

To use Shopify POS with extensions, your network must allow access to the following domains:

  • cdn.shopify.com
  • extensions.shopifycdn.com

Configure your firewall and content filtering systems to allow traffic from both domains.

Install apps using POS UI Extensions

You can find all apps using POS UI Extensions in the Shopify App Store from the Works with Shopify POS collection page.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Apps.

  2. Click Shopify App Store, and then search for the type of app that you're looking for.

  3. Click Filter, and then select Works with Shopify POS.

  4. Click Install.

Add POS apps to your smart grid

You can add a POS app as a tile to your smart grid so the app is available on all devices and locations.

To complete these steps, you need an app using POS UI extensions installed in your admin.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Point of Sale > Settings.

  2. In the Customization section, click POS app to open the POS editor.

  3. In the Smart grid section, select the smart grid template that you want to add the tile to.

  4. In the page that you want to add the tile to, click ⊕ Add tile.

  5. Click Embedded Apps, and then click the app that you want to add to your smart grid.

  6. Click Save.

Add POS UI Action and Block Extensions on Shopify POS

Some POS apps can use an Action or Block Extension to add additional functionality to different surfaces on Shopify POS. The following table displays which Shopify POS surfaces support Action or Block Extensions.

If an app supports Action and Block Extensions, then you can activate the extension for all locations where you want it to display.

For example, if you use an app that supports Action and Block Extensions, then you can choose to add the app UI Extension to the Shopify POS post-purchase order page to provide access to the app UI Extension functions where your staff need to use them.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Point of Sale > Settings.

  2. In the Customization section, click any of the customizable elements to open the POS editor.

  3. Click the Apps icon in the POS editor menu bar.

  4. In the Apps section, activate the additional functionality for the app.

  5. Click Save.
