Shopify Payments rates in the United States by card type

If your business is based in the United States, then your Shopify Payments charges depend on the card type that your customers use.

Online card types

The following are the two main card types that determine the charges for your Shopify Payments orders:

  • Standard: Includes domestic consumer cards issued by Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and Diners Club.
  • Premium: Includes domestic commercial, corporate, or business-tier cards, such as Visa Business, and all domestic American Express cards.

Consumer cards

Consumer cards are credit and debit cards that are issued to individuals for personal use and are classified as the Standard card type.

Commercial, corporate, and business cards

Commercial, corporate, and business cards are designed for businesses and organizations. They're a payment method for business-related expenses, such as supplies, inventory, and employee expenses. These cards are classified as the Premium card type.

Additional charges for international cards

If you process international cards and payment methods, then an additional charge applies above the base rate. Learn more about plans and pricing.

In-person cards

If you accept payments in person using Shopify POS, Tap to Pay on Shopify Mobile, and Shopify card readers, then different rates apply to these transactions. In-person payment rates typically cost less than online rates because they're considered lower risk due to the physical presence of the payment card.

Manually entered card payments

A manually entered card payment is a transaction where you enter a customer's card details and then process their payment through the admin using draft orders or through Shopify POS.

Manually entered payments are subject to higher fees because card details are often collected over the phone or through other unencrypted methods, increasing the risk of fraud.

View payment rates in your Shopify admin

How you view your payment rates depends on whether your store is part of a Shopify organization.

For stores not in an organization

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Payments.

  2. In the Shopify Payments section, click Manage.

  3. Click Manage payment methods.

  4. Click View payment rates.

For stores in an organization

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Payments.

  2. In the Payment providers section, click Shopify Payments.

  3. In the Accounts section, select the payment entity that you want to view rates for.

  4. Click Manage payment methods.

  5. Click View payment rates.

Payments finance report

The Payments finance report lists your store's payment transactions for a selected timeframe. It also includes transaction volume based on card types. Learn more about the Payments finance report.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Analytics > Reports.

  2. Click Categories.

  3. Select Finances to filter the reports to include only finances reports.

  4. In the Name column, click the Payments report.
