Bank account and personal information requirements for using Shopify Payments in the United Kingdom

Before using Shopify Payments in the United Kingdom, you need to understand the requirements that are in place to comply with regulations and to prevent financial crimes. This section explains why personal information is collected, the accepted types of documentation, and provides guidance for ensuring that your documentation meets the necessary criteria.

Requirements for using Shopify Payments in the United Kingdom

Before you use Shopify Payments in the United Kingdom, ensure that you meet the following requirements:

  • Eligible business types: Certain types of businesses and services aren't permitted to use Shopify Payments. To determine whether your business is eligible, refer to the list of prohibited business types for the United Kingdom in the Shopify Payments Terms of Service.
  • Bank account requirements: Your bank account must meet the following requirements before you can connect it to Shopify Payments:
    • The bank account must be held at a financial institution based in the United Kingdom.
    • The bank account must be in GBP currency.
    • The bank account must be eligible for Faster Payments Service (FPS) transfers.

Unsupported bank account types

Certain bank account types aren't compatible with Shopify Payments. The following account types aren't supported:

  • Checking accounts that accept only wire transfers: These accounts don't work with Shopify Payments.
  • Savings accounts: Savings accounts can't be used for Shopify Payments payouts.
  • Flex-currency accounts: Accounts that support multiple currencies simultaneously aren't supported.
  • Money transfer services: Services that mimic bank accounts, such as some fintech platforms, can't be used with Shopify Payments.

Although non-Shopify virtual accounts are supported, you can experience more payout failures with these accounts.

To confirm whether your account can accept the transfer type listed for your region, contact your bank.

Purpose of collecting information

Shopify and its banking partners are required to collect and verify information about you and your business to comply with regulations in the United Kingdom that are designed to prevent financial crimes. As local rules and regulations evolve, you might be contacted by Shopify and its banking partners to provide additional information throughout the lifespan of your Shopify Payments account.

The information that's collected is used to confirm the identity of the business, the identities of individuals linked to the business, and the nature of the relationship between the two.

Shopify never physically mails documentation to you. Any important documents or communications are emailed, or made digitally available to the store owner in the Settings > Users page of your Shopify admin.

Review Shopify's Privacy Policy to learn about how your information is kept confidential and safe.

Required personal and business information for activating Shopify Payments in the United Kingdom

The personal information that Shopify is required to collect varies from country to country. For businesses in the United Kingdom, ensure that you correctly identify your business type, because it determines the information that you need to provide.

If you have a Company Registration Number (CRN), then your business type can be found on Companies House by searching for your business using your CRN. Select your business type based on the following guidance:

  • If your business type contains the term "partnership", then select Incorporated Partnership.
  • If your business type shows "Charitable Incorporated Organization", "Registered Society", or "Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organization", then select Incorporated Non Profit.
  • All other businesses can select Private Corporation.

If you have a registered business but don't have a Company Registration Number (CRN), then select your business type based on the following guidance:

  • General partnerships that are registered with HM Revenue and Customs but not with Companies House must select Unincorporated Partnership.
  • Non profit organizations and charities that are registered with the UK Charity Commission or the Scottish Charity Regulator, but not with Companies House, must select Unincorporated Non Profit.

Review the following details of the information that's required for each business type. If none of the above options apply to your business, then you should select Individual / Sole Trader as your business type.

Contact Shopify Support if you're unsure of which business type to select.

Individual / Sole Trader

Individuals are single owner businesses that haven't registered with the government and are doing business privately. Sole traders are single owner businesses who are registered with the government under their personal information. Both are businesses that are owned and controlled by one individual living in the United Kingdom. This includes freelancers and self-employed small business operators.

These business types are treated the same way and must provide the same information. Individuals and sole traders must provide:

  • Legal first and last names: Your full legal name as it's displayed on government-issued documentation.
  • Date of birth: Your birth date, formatted as DD/MM/YYYY.
  • Email address: A valid and active email address for account-related communications.
  • Phone number: A contact phone number in the United Kingdom.
  • Residential address in the United Kingdom: Your home address, matching your government documentation.

If your information can't be verified automatically, then you'll receive a request to verify your identity. If any of your information such as your name, date of birth, or home address, is incorrect, then you should update your account information.

If the information is correct and you still receive a request for verification, then you can resolve the request by completing either one of the following tasks:

  • Confirm your identity by taking a selfie with a valid photo ID.
  • Upload separate proof of identity and proof of address documents in your Shopify admin.
    • The information on your documents must match what you enter on your account exactly. Update your account information to match your documents if needed.
Private corporations

A private corporation is a business whose equity is divided into shares, owned by shareholders. A corporation is considered its own legal entity, separate from the people who run it. They typically also have a board of directors.

Private corporations must assign either a beneficial owner or an executive with decision making power as their account representative. The account representative must provide the following information:

  • Legal first and last names: The account representative's full legal name as it's displayed on government-issued documentation.
  • Date of birth: The account representative's birth date, formatted as DD/MM/YYYY.
  • Email address: A valid and active email address for account-related communications.
  • Phone number: A contact phone number in the United Kingdom.
  • Residential address: The account representative's home address, matching government documentation.
  • Job title: The job title of the account representative.
  • Equity: The equity percentage that the account representative has in the business, if applicable.

  • VAT number: The business VAT number, if applicable.
  • Business phone number: An active contact phone number for the business.
  • Business address: The official physical address of the business in the United Kingdom, matching Companies House records.

Our banking partners verify your information by comparing it against the information in Companies House. Ensure that you use the correct letter case, punctuation, and symbols.

If the information that you provide about the business can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. When providing this document, ensure that the registered name, CRN number, and business address listed in your account match exactly with the information on the document, and update the information in your account to match the document if necessary. Review the list of acceptable business documents.

You must additionally list any other people who are also beneficial owners, and all of your directors. Ensure you enter their names, dates of birth, and home addresses exactly as shown on their government documents. If their identities can't be verified automatically, then they might need to provide photo ID or proof of address.

The owners and directors you provide must match against the owners and directors listed in Companies House. If a mismatch is detected, you'll be asked to either complete the attestation process for both owners and directors by clicking the "sign" button, or provide a proof of ownership and/or directorship document. Signing the attestations is fast and simple, but if you'd prefer to submit documents, ensure the names of the owners and directors listed on your account matches exactly with the owners and directors listed on your document. Update the information on your account to match your document, if necessary.

If your business is owned by a holding company (either wholly or partly), sign the attestation to complete verification. If your business has no owners then you only need to verify your directors.

Limited Liability Partnership (LLP)

A limited liability partnership is a business owned by at least two partners, who have registered with Companies House and obtained a CRN. LLPs have equity, and the partnership is its own entity, separate from the owners. This also includes limited partnerships (LPs).

  • Business address: The official physical address of the business in the United Kingdom, matching Companies House records.

Update the information on your account to match your document, if necessary.

If your business is owned by a holding company (either wholly or partly), sign the attestation to complete verification.

Other partnerships

All other partnerships which are not incorporated and haven't registered with Companies House, but who have a partnership agreement. The owners are considered the legal entity in this case, and the business isn't a separate entity. The most common example is general partnerships.

    • The information on your documents must match what you enter on your account exactly. Update your account information to match your documents if needed.

Other partnerships also need to provide the following details about the business:

  • Registered name: The legal business name.
  • VAT number: The business VAT number, if applicable.
  • Business phone number: An active contact phone number for the business.
  • Business address: The official physical address of the business in the United Kingdom.

Our banking partners verify your information by comparing it against the information in business registries. Ensure that you use the correct letter case, punctuation, and symbols.

If the information that you provide about the business can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. When providing this document, ensure that the registered name and business address listed in your account match exactly with the information on the document, and update the information in your account to match the document if necessary. Review the list of acceptable business documents.

You also need to list any other people who are owners of the partnership. Ensure you enter their names, dates of birth, and home addresses exactly as shown on their government documents. If their identities can't be verified automatically, then they might need to provide photo ID or proof of address.

The owners and directors you provide must match against the owners and directors listed in your government's registry. Acceptable document types

To help with the verification process, you need to provide certain documents to validate your personal information and in some cases your business information. The following document types are acceptable for individuals and businesses in the United Kingdom.

Identity documents

When submitting identity documents, they must include your full legal name, date of birth (DOB), and your photo. The following are the accepted identity documents when using Shopify Payments in the United Kingdom:

  • Passport
  • Driver's license
  • Citizen card
  • Electoral ID

When submitting address documents, they must include your full legal name, your home address, and if stated, an issuance date within an eligible range. If necessary you should update the residential address on your account to match what's shown on your documentation. The following are the accepted address documents:

  • Driver's license (can't be used a second time if already used as photo ID)
  • Utility bill - Dated within 6 months
  • Bank statement - Dated within 6 months
  • Government-issued letter - Dated within 6 months
  • Solicitor's letter

  • Register of Members (Shareholder Register)
  • Register of Persons with Significant Control (PSC) (Ultimate Beneficial Owner Register)
  • Confirmation Statement (Annual Returns)
  • Certificate of Incumbency
  • IN01 (Application to Register a Company)-dated within 12 months

Every beneficial owner/director listed in your documentation must also be listed in your Shopify Payments account and assigned the role of "Owner" or "Director" accordingly. A beneficial owner is defined as someone who owns 25% or more of the business equity. Update the information in your account to match the document if necessary.

If your business does not have any beneficial owners, you only have to verify your directors.

If your business is owned by a holding company, please complete the digital attestation process instead by pressing the "sign" button.

Ensuring documentation compliance

When providing your documents, ensure that they meet the necessary criteria. Review the following guidelines to ensure compliance:

  • Accuracy: Ensure that the information on your documents matches what you've entered in your Shopify Payments account. Update your account to match your documents, if necessary.
  • Clarity and legibility: Make sure that your documents are clear and large enough to read. Ensure the entire document is visible in the photograph.
  • Completeness: Ensure all the necessary details are visible on your document. Review the acceptable document types listed on this page to understand what details must be included on the document.
  • Original documentation: Take an original photograph of your document using a camera. Don't photocopy, scan, or screenshot your documents. Don't paste photos of documents into other documents. Don't take photos of computer screens or printouts.
    • If your document was issued to you digitally, then provide the PDF file with all pages as it was originally given to you, with no alterations.
  • Validity: Ensure photo IDs aren't expired and that proof of address is recently issued. If providing proof of business registration, then your business should still be actively registered and in good standing.

Troubleshooting common issues

Before contacting Shopify Support, review the following common onboarding issues and their solutions.

I'm being asked for a CRN, but I don't have one.

If you're being asked for a CRN but don't have one, then you might be set up as the incorrect business type. If you're still setting up the account, then go back to the business type selection stage and select a type that's better suited for your business. Private corporations. limited liability partnerships, and incorporated non profits all require CRNs.

A common mistake is that general partnerships sign up as limited liability partnerships. General partnerships should select the business type "other partnership".

If you've already set up the account and are being asked for a CRN as part of your verification process, update your business type through Settings > General > Business Details. Click the three dots beside your business entity and then click "edit" to update your business type.

Contact Shopify Support if you have questions.

My document was rejected

Ensure that the information on your account matches your document exactly, and update your account if needed. If your documents are still being rejected, then refer to the following sections on this page:

  • Acceptable document types: Which documents are accepted and what details they must include. Screenshots, printouts of online searches, and registry screenshots aren't accepted.
  • Ensuring documentation compliance: Requirements for accuracy, clarity, completeness, original documentation, and validity.
I live outside the UK and I'm having difficulty verifying my photo ID and proof of address documentation.

If you live outside of the United Kingdom, then you should submit a photograph of a valid passport as a photo ID.

When you're asked for proof of address, submit either a utility bill or a bank account statement issued within the last 6 months that clearly shows your name, home address, and issued date.

Accepted utility bills are bills for gas, water, electricity, sewer or wastewater collection, trash or recycling collection, internet, telephone or mobile phones, and cable or satellite TV only.

Bank account statements need to be official monthly documents from banks summarizing account activity for that period. Letters, receipts, or any other type of bank documentation isn't accepted.

If you're submitting a physical document, then take a clear photograph of the document. Don't scan it, screenshot it, or take photos of other photographs. If you're submitting a digital document, then submit the original PDF file without any alterations and all original pages included.

My business information isn't being verified.

When entering your business information, ensure that your business name, CRN, and business address match exactly as they appear in the companies house registry. This includes:

  • Correct letter case (uppercase and lowercase)
  • Correct punctuation and spacing
  • Complete business name as registered

If you're a business type that doesn't have a CRN, submit one of the relevant document types showing your business's name and address, and ensure the information on your account matches the documentation.

Our banking partners verify your information automatically by comparing it against official registries. Even small differences can cause verification to fail. Ensure the documentation you're submitting shows legal business name, CRN, and business address, and that these details match what is shown on your account. Update your account to match your document, if necessary.

If you are registered with Companies House and providing Companies House documentation, it's common for your document to not show business address on it. In these cases, locate your business on Companies House and update your business address to match the business address shown on the registry.

My address can't be automatically verified.

For Shopify Payments UK, if your address can't be automatically verified, then you'll be asked to either complete the selfie process, or to provide a proof of address document.

Completing the selfie process is recommended: The individual who requires verification can click the "selfie" button and then take a photograph of their photo ID, and themselves, in order to verify. This can be done instead of providing a proof of address document.

If you would prefer to provide a document manually, you can do that instead. Proof of address documents must show your full name, home address, and be one of the document types shown here. You should also ensure:

  1. Ensure the address you entered in your Shopify Payments account matches exactly with the address on your proof of address document.
  2. Update your information in your account to match your document if necessary.
  3. Upload a clear photograph of your proof of address document.
  4. Ensure the document you're uploading shows your own full name. If for example, you have a utility bill in someone else's name, you'll need to provide a different document.
My owner and/or director information can't be verified.

For Shopify Payments UK, you're required to enter your owners and directors so that the names listed match against the owners and directors listed for your business on your applicable government business registry (Ex: Companies House). We recommend looking up your owner and director information in your registry and entering the names as exactly shown there. If you have no owners, you only have to verify your directors.

If you have done so and your ownership or directorship still cannot be verified, we recommend clicking the "sign" button on your verification page to digitally attest that the information you have provided is correct. This process is fast and simple.

If you would prefer you can provide a document confirming who your owners or directors are, instead of using the attestation process. The owner and/or director information that you enter on your Shopify Payments account must match the information on the documentation that you upload. If an owner/director is listed on your documentation, but isn't added to your Shopify Payments account, then you must add that person to your account and assign them the Owner and/or Director role. A list of what types of documents you can provide to verify ownership is available here.

You should make sure the owners and directors on your account are a 1:1 match with your documentation. Do not list extra owners/directors that are not shown on your documents.

Frequently asked questions

Review the following frequently asked questions about Shopify Payments requirements in the United Kingdom.

Why do you need my photo ID and personal information if I'm a company, partnership, or non-profit?

Even if you're set up as a company, partnership, or non-profit, the banking partners that Shopify works with are required by regulations in the United Kingdom to verify the identities of the individuals associated with the business.

I'm a publicly owned company. What business type should I select?

Select Private Corporation and indicate that you have no owners. For publicly owned companies, you need to assign an executive with decision-making authority as your account representative, for example, the CEO, CFO, or treasurer.

There's no option currently to select "public company" as a business type. However, private companies and public companies have their business entities verified in the same way, and otherwise have the same account requirements.

If you've already set up the Shopify Payments account and are now being asked for ownership information as part of your verification process, then update your ownership details to reflect that you have no owners. Remove the "owner" role from any people on file, and instead ensure all your directors are listed on the account and have the "director" role assigned.

You may be asked to confirm that the listed directorship is correct. If you can confirm it looks correct, click the "sign" button to digitally attest to the information on file.

I'm an Unincorporated Association without a CRN. How should I proceed?

Unincorporated Associations aren't currently supported on Shopify Payments in the United Kingdom. To proceed, you can either obtain a CRN with Companies House and set up as a different business type, or one of your organizers can set up as an Individual using their personal information.

I'm a registered sole proprietorship. How can I provide you with my business information?

If you're a sole proprietor, then you should select the business type Individual / Sole Trader. For the purposes of business and identity verification in the United Kingdom, only the personal information of the owner is required if you're a sole proprietorship.

Don't select from one of the other registered business type options. Companies and partnerships are verified differently, and you can run into difficulties verifying the account.

I'm a citizen of the United Kingdom but don't currently live there. Can I use Shopify Payments UK?

If your business type is Individual / Sole Trader, then you must live in the UK to be eligible for Shopify Payments UK. If you don't currently live in the UK, then you need to create a Shopify Payments account for the region you live in.

Update your store address to your current location. If your location is eligible for Shopify Payments, then you can create a Shopify Payments account for that region instead.

If your business is a partnership, company, or non-profit, then you don't need to personally live in the UK, but your business must be registered there and have a UK business address. If you need help, then contact Shopify Support.

Will my personal and business information be kept private?

Yes. Personal information for owners and directors, such as names or home addresses, is kept private and is never shared publicly.

My account was already verified. Why am I being asked to provide new information?

Regulatory requirements and the requirements from financial partners and their card networks change over time. When this happens, you might need to provide additional information to remain compliant. You'll receive these requests through a banner or alert in your admin and a corresponding email. You must complete these requests to continue using Shopify Payments.

How do I update my Shopify Payments account information?

If you are actively being asked to complete account verification, then you can make any updates to your information from in the verification page along with submitting any documents that are being requested.

Outside of the verification process, the account owner of the store can update these details through Settings > General > Business Details. Click the three dots beside your business entity and then click "edit" to update that business's information, including business type.

Note that any changes you make here are automatically sent to our banking partners for review, and the new information is re-run through their verification process. It's possible the changes automatically re-verify, but you may also be asked for supporting documents.

If you have an outstanding Shopify Capital UK cash advance, then you may not be able to update some of your business information until it's completely paid off first. Your cash advance was issued to the business currently on file, so it cannot be transferred to a different business. Contact Shopify Support if you have questions.

What happens if I miss my verification deadline?

You will see a temporary pause on your payouts until the verification procedure is completed. After the first deadline is hit and payouts are temporarily paused, you may see a second deadline indicating when your ability to accept orders with Shopify Payments will be temporarily paused.

All of these pauses are temporary, and will be automatically lifted once you complete verification. Reference your admin page for your deadlines.

Starting in June of 2026, brand new Shopify Payments UK accounts have 90 days from first order processed to complete verification. If 90 days pass, any orders you processed using Shopify Payments may be automatically refunded.

This only applies to European countries, and it only applies to brand new accounts created on or after June of 2026. If this is applicable to you, warnings will tell your account owner when they can expect the refunds to process.
