Requirements when using Shopify Payments for Singapore

Before you can use Shopify Payments in Singapore, you need to understand the personal information requirements. These requirements are in place to comply with regulations and prevent financial crimes. Personal information is collected to verify your identity and business details, and certain types of documentation are accepted for this purpose.

Requirements for using Shopify Payments in Singapore

Before you use Shopify Payments in Singapore, ensure that you meet the following requirements:

  • Eligible business types: Certain types of businesses and services aren't permitted to use Shopify Payments. To determine whether your business is eligible, refer to the list of prohibited business types for Singapore in the Shopify Payments Terms of Service.
  • Bank account requirements: Your bank account must meet the following requirements before you can connect it to Shopify Payments:
    • The bank account must be a full checking account with a bank in Singapore.
    • The bank account must be in SGD currency.
    • The bank account must be eligible for recurring transfers from Shopify.
    • The bank account must be set up for Fast And Secure Transfers (FAST) or Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) transfers. Consult your bank to verify whether your account can accept these types of transfers.

Unsupported bank account types

Certain bank account types aren't compatible with Shopify Payments. The following account types aren't supported:

  • Checking accounts that accept only wire transfers: These accounts don't work with Shopify Payments.
  • Savings accounts: Savings accounts can't be used for Shopify Payments payouts.
  • Flex-currency accounts: Accounts that support multiple currencies simultaneously aren't supported.
  • Money transfer services: Services that mimic bank accounts, such as some fintech platforms, can't be used with Shopify Payments.

Although non-Shopify virtual accounts are supported, you can experience more payout failures with these accounts.

To confirm whether your account can accept the transfer type listed for your region, contact your bank.

Purpose of collecting information

Shopify and its banking partners are required to collect and verify information about you and your business to comply with regulations in Singapore that are designed to prevent financial crimes. As local rules and regulations evolve, you might be contacted by Shopify and its banking partners to provide additional information throughout the lifespan of your Shopify Payments account.

The information that's collected is used to confirm the identity of the business, the identities of individuals linked to the business, and the nature of the relationship between the two.

Shopify never physically mails documentation to you. Any important documents or communications are emailed, or made digitally available to the store owner in the Settings > Users page of your Shopify admin.

Review Shopify's Privacy Policy to learn about how your information is kept confidential and safe.

Troubleshooting common issues

Before contacting Shopify Support, review the following common onboarding issues and their solutions.

My document was rejected.

Ensure the information on your account matches your document exactly, and update your account if needed. If your documents are still being rejected, then refer to the following sections on this page:

My address can't be automatically verified.

If your address can't be automatically verified, then you must upload a proof of address document. Ensure the following:

  • The name and address on the document matches exactly with the name and address listed in your Shopify Payments account.
  • The document is dated within the past 6 months.
  • The document is one of the accepted address document types.

You need to provide a document that shows your own name. For example: If your own name doesn't appear on your utility bills, you should select and provide a different document from the option list.

My business information isn't being verified.

Shopify banking partners verify your business information by comparing it against ACRA's registry database in Singapore. If your business can't be verified, then check the following details:

  • Ensure that your registered business name matches exactly as it appears in government business registries, including letter case, punctuation, and symbols.
  • Ensure that your UEN is correct.
  • Ensure that your business address matches the address listed in the government business registry.

If your information still can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. Ensure that the information on your document matches what you've entered in your Shopify Payments account.

I don't have a UEN, but I'm not an individual.

If you don't have a UEN, then you should select Individual and assign a key decision maker or owner as the account representative. Shopify Payments does not currently support any other business types that do not have UENs.

My owner information can't be verified.

You're required to enter your owners on your Shopify Payments account, so that the names listed match against the owners listed for your business on the ACRA registry. We recommend looking up your owner information in ACRA and entering the names as exactly shown there. If you have no owners, you must list all of your directors on the account instead.

If you have done so and your ownership still cannot be verified, then you'll be asked to provide a document confirming who your owners or directors are. The owner and director information that you enter on your Shopify Payments account must match the information on the documentation that you upload. If an owner/director is listed on your documentation, but isn't added to your Shopify Payments account, then you must add that person to your account and assign them the Owner/Director role.

You should make sure the owners and directors on your account are a 1:1 match with your documentation. Do not list extra owners/directors that are not shown on your documents. A list of what types of documents you can provide to verify ownership is available here.

Frequently asked questions

Review the following frequently asked questions about Shopify Payments requirements in Singapore.

Why do you need my photo ID or proof of address if I'm a company, partnership, or non-profit in Singapore?

Even if you're entered as a company, partnership, or non-profit, our banking partners are required by regulatory laws in Singapore to verify the identities of the people associated with the business, including their identities and where they're located.

I'm a citizen of Singapore but don't currently live there. Can I use Shopify Payments Singapore?

If your business type is individual or sole proprietorship, then you're required to live in Singapore to be eligible for Shopify Payments Singapore. If you don't currently live in Singapore, then you should instead create a Shopify Payments account for the region you do live in.

Update your store address to your current location. If your location is eligible for Shopify Payments, then you can create a Shopify Payments account for that region instead.

If you're a type of partnership, company, or non-profit, then you're not required to personally live in Singapore, but your business is required to be registered there and have a Singapore business address. If you need help, then contact Shopify Support.

I'm a publicly traded company in Singapore. Which business type should I pick?

You should pick private company. For the purposes of business and identity verification, the process for public and privately owned companies is identical.

You can skip past the section of the account setup form that requests that you add owners. You should list all of your directors. If you've already set up the account and are being asked for ownership information as part of your verification process, then contact Shopify Support for assistance with verifying your account.

I'm a business entity run by the government in Singapore. Which business type should I pick?

Please select the business type non profit.

You will be required to provide a letter of authorization for your account representative. The person signing the letter as the authorizer needs to be someone officially associated with the business entity on Singapore Government Directory. The authorizer will have to be additionally listed on the account and provide their photo ID. For government entities, there will always have to be an authorizer and a letter of authorization, even if the account representative provided is already shown on the government directory.

Once you've completed this process, please contact Shopify Support to finalize verification of your Shopify Payments account.

How do I update my Shopify Payments account information?

If you are actively being asked to complete account verification, then you can make any updates to your information from in the verification page along with submitting any documents that are being requested.

Outside of the verification process, the account owner of the store can update these details through Settings > General > Business Details. Click the three dots beside your business entity and then click "edit" to update that business's information, including business type.

Note that any changes you make here are automatically sent to our banking partners for review, and the new information is re-run through their verification process. It's possible the changes automatically re-verify, but you may also be asked for supporting documents.

If you have any difficulty with this process, contact Shopify Support for assistance.

How long do I have to finish verifying my account?

For Shopify Payments Singapore specifically, accounts must be verified within 120 days from the day that you accept the terms of service and create the account. This is because the Singapore Payments Services Act of 2019 requires our banking partners to close accounts if they are not verified within 120 days. This requirement does not apply to any other region and is specific to laws in Singapore.

If you do not complete verification after 120 days your Shopify Payments account will not be able to process new orders moving forward. You can still complete verification to obtain any payouts which are on hold, but completing verification past the deadline will not re-enable your checkout.

If you believe your account is affected by this, then complete verification first. Any accounts that complete verification before the 120 day deadline will be automatically re-enabled and checkout will become operational again. If verifying does not re-enable your checkout automatically, then contact Shopify Support for assistance.
