If you're not sure what business type to pick, then contact Shopify Support for help with selecting the right one.
Individuals
Individuals are single owner businesses that haven't registered with the government and are doing business privately. This includes empresário em nome individual, sole traders, sole proprietorships, freelancers, and the self-employed, even if they have obtained registration numbers.
Individuals need to provide the following information:
- Legal first and last name: Your full legal name as it appears on government-issued documentation.
- Date of birth: Your birth date.
- Email address: A valid and active email address.
- Phone number: A valid and active phone number.
- Residential address in Portugal: Your home address, matching your documentation.
If your information can't be verified automatically, then you'll receive a request to verify your identity. If any of your information such as your name, date of birth, or home address, is incorrect, then you should update your account information.
If the information is correct and you still receive a request for verification, then you can resolve the request by completing either one of the following tasks:
- Confirm your identity by taking a selfie with a valid photo ID.
- Upload separate proof of identity and proof of address documents in your Shopify admin.
- The information on your documents must match what you enter on your account exactly. Update your account information to match your documents if needed.
Private corporation (LDA, Unipessoal)
A private corporation is a business whose equity is divided into shares, owned by shareholders. A corporation is considered its own legal entity, separate from the people who run it. They typically also have a board of directors.
Private corporations must assign either a beneficial owner or an executive with decision-making power as their account representative. The account representative needs to provide the following information:

When providing this document, ensure that the registered name, corporate tax identification number, and business address listed in your account match exactly with the information on the document, and update the information in your account to match the document. Review the list of acceptable business documents.

If their identities can't be verified automatically, then they might need to provide photo ID or proof of address.
The owners that you provide must match against the owners listed in your government's business registry. If a mismatch is detected, then you'll be asked to either complete the attestation process by clicking the Sign button, or provide a proof of ownership document. Signing the attestation is the quickest way to resolve the mismatch, but if you'd prefer to submit a document, then ensure the names of the owners listed on your account match exactly with the owners listed on your document. Update the information on your account to match your document, if necessary. If your business is owned by a holding company (either wholly or partly), then sign the attestation to complete verification.
If your business has no beneficial owners, then you'll be asked to either sign an attestation or provide a document confirming your directors instead. If you'd prefer to submit a document, then ensure the names of the directors listed in your account match exactly with the directors listed on your document. Unincorporated partnerships
An unincorporated partnership is a business owned by at least two partners, who haven't registered for a corporate tax identification number, but who have a partnership agreement. The owners are considered the legal entity in this case, and the business is not a separate entity.

Acceptable document types
This section explains which documents you can use to verify your identity and business details.

- Utility bill (dated within the last 6 months)
- Bank account statement (dated within the last 6 months)

Every beneficial owner listed in your documentation must also be listed in your Shopify Payments account and assigned the role of Owner. A beneficial owner is defined as someone who owns 25% or more of the business equity. Update the information in your account to match the document if necessary.
If your business does not have any beneficial owners, then you will be required to verify your directors instead. In these cases, the same documents listed above are eligible. Each director listed in your documentation must also be listed in your Shopify Payments account and assigned the role of Director. Update the information in your account to match the document if necessary.
If your business is owned by a holding company, then complete the digital attestation process instead by pressing the Sign button.
Ensuring documentation compliance
When providing your documents, ensure that they meet the necessary criteria. Review the following guidelines to ensure compliance:
- Accuracy: Ensure that the information on your documents matches what you've entered in your Shopify Payments account. Update your account to match your documents, if necessary.
- Clarity and legibility: Make sure that your documents are clear and large enough to read. Ensure the entire document is visible in the photograph.
- Completeness: Ensure all the necessary details are visible on your document. Review the acceptable document types listed on this page to understand what details must be included on the document.
- Original documentation: Take an original photograph of your document using a camera. Don't photocopy, scan, or screenshot your documents. Don't paste photos of documents into other documents. Don't take photos of computer screens or printouts.
- If your document was issued to you digitally, then provide the PDF file with all pages as it was originally given to you, with no alterations.
- Validity: Ensure photo IDs aren't expired and that proof of address is recently issued. If providing proof of business registration, then your business should still be actively registered and in good standing.
Troubleshooting common issues
Before contacting Shopify Support, review these common onboarding issues and their solutions.
My document was rejected.
Ensure the information on your account matches your document exactly, and update your account if needed. If your documents are still being rejected, then refer to the following sections on this page:
- Acceptable document types: Accepted documents and required details. Screenshots, printouts, and registry screenshots aren't accepted.
- Ensuring documentation compliance: Requirements for accuracy, clarity, completeness, and validity.
My address can't be automatically verified.
For Shopify Payments Portugal, if your address can't be automatically verified, then you'll be asked to either complete the selfie process, or to provide a proof of address document.
Completing the selfie process is recommended: the individual who requires verification can click the Selfie button and then take a photograph of their photo ID, and themselves, in order to verify. The selfie process can be completed instead of providing a proof of address document.
If you would prefer to provide a document manually, then you can do that instead. Proof of address documents must show your full name, home address, and be one of the document types shown here. You should also ensure:
- Ensure the address that you entered in your Shopify Payments account matches exactly with the address on your proof of address document.
- Update your information in your account to match your document if necessary.
- Upload a clear photograph of your proof of address document.
- Ensure the document that you're uploading shows your own full name. If, for example, you have a utility bill in someone else's name, then you'll need to provide a different document.
My business information isn't being verified.
Shopify banking partners verify your business information by comparing it against government registries in Portugal. If your business can't be verified, then check the following details:
- Ensure that your registered business name matches exactly as it appears in government business registries, including letter case, punctuation, and symbols.
- Ensure that your corporate tax identification number is correct.
- Ensure that your business address matches the address listed in the government business registry.
If your information still can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. Ensure that the information on your document matches what you've entered in your Shopify Payments account.
My payment is showing as pending.
Local payment methods such as Multibanco and Klarna can leave orders in a pending state during payment processing. Check the order's timeline to confirm whether the payment was successful. If the payment failed, then you'll need to create a new draft order and send it to your customer to capture the funds.
My payouts are failing with a virtual bank account.
Virtual bank accounts such as Revolut and Payoneer are accepted for payouts, but have a higher payout failure rate than traditional bank accounts. Payouts can also fail if the payout recipient name doesn't match the name your bank has on file. If your payouts are failing, then verify that the name on your Shopify Payments account matches your bank records, or consider using a standard bank account instead.
I'm a partnership and I'm being asked for a corporate tax identification number that I don't have.
If you're a partnership that doesn't have a corporate tax identification number, then you might be set up as the incorrect business type. If you're in the process of setting up the account, then return to the business type selection and select Unincorporated partnership.
If you've already set up the account and are being asked for a corporate tax identification number as part of your verification process, then you can update your business type by going to Settings > General. Click the beside your business details, and then click Edit. If you have any difficulty with updating your business type, then contact Shopify Support for assistance.
I don't have a corporate tax identification number, but I'm not an individual.
If you don't have a corporate tax identification number, then you can select Unincorporated partnership or Unincorporated non-profit as your business type. You still need to provide business documentation that confirms your business is registered as said business type in Portugal.
If neither of these business types fits your business, then select Individual and assign a key decision maker or owner as the account representative.
My owner information can't be verified.
For Shopify Payments Portugal, you're required to enter your beneficial owners so that the names listed match against the owners listed for your business on your government's business registry. We recommend looking up your owner information in the registry and entering the names as exactly shown there. If you have no beneficial owners, then you must list all of your directors on the account instead.
If you have done so and your ownership or directorship still cannot be verified, then we recommend clicking the Sign button on your verification page to digitally attest that the information that you have provided is correct. Signing the attestation is the quickest way to resolve the mismatch.
If you would prefer, then you can provide a document confirming who your owners or directors are, instead of using the attestation process. The owner and/or director information that you enter on your Shopify Payments account must match the information on the documentation that you upload. If an owner/director is listed on your documentation, but isn't added to your Shopify Payments account, then you must add that person to your account and assign them the Owner and/or Director role. A list of what types of documents you can provide to verify ownership is available here.
You should make sure the owners and directors on your account are a 1:1 match with your documentation. Do not list extra owners/directors that are not shown on your documents.
Frequently asked questions
Review these frequently asked questions about Shopify Payments requirements in Portugal.
Why do you need my photo ID and personal information if I'm a company, partnership, or non-profit?
Even if you're set up as a company, partnership, or non-profit, Shopify banking partners are required by regulations in Portugal to verify the identities of the people associated with the business, including who they are and where they're located.
I'm a publicly traded company in Portugal. Which business type should I select?
You should pick Private corporation. For the purposes of business verification, the process for public and privately owned companies is identical. You can skip past the section of the account setup form that requests that you add owners. You're not required to list any beneficial owners, if you have none.
If you're a publicly traded company in Portugal, you've already set up the Shopify Payments account, and now you're being asked for ownership information as part of your verification process, then update your ownership details to reflect that you have no beneficial owners. Remove the Owner role from any people on file, and instead ensure all your directors are listed on the account and have the Director role assigned.
You might be asked to confirm that the listed directorship is correct. If you can confirm the directorship looks correct, then click the Sign button to digitally attest to the information on file.
If you have any difficulty with this process, then contact Shopify Support for assistance.
I'm a citizen of Portugal but I don't currently live there. Can I use Shopify Payments in Portugal?
If your business type is individual, then you're required to live in Portugal to be eligible for Shopify Payments in Portugal. If you don't currently live in Portugal, then you should create a Shopify Payments account for the region where you live.
Update your store address to your current location. If your location is eligible for Shopify Payments, then you can create a Shopify Payments account for that region instead.
If you're a partnership, company, or non-profit, then you aren't required to personally live in Portugal, but your business must be registered there and have a Portuguese business address. If you need help, then contact Shopify Support.
Will I be charged VAT on my Shopify Payments processing fees?
No. VAT isn't charged on Shopify Payments processing fees in Portugal.
My account was already verified. Why am I being asked to provide new information?
Regulatory requirements and the requirements from financial partners and their card networks change over time. When this happens, you might need to provide additional information to remain compliant. You'll receive these requests through a banner or alert in your admin and a corresponding email. You must complete these requests to continue using Shopify Payments.
How do I update my Shopify Payments account information?
If you're actively being asked to complete account verification, then you can make any updates to your information from within the verification page, along with submitting any documents that are being requested.
Outside of the verification process, the store owner can update these details through Settings > General > Business Details. Click the beside your business entity, and then click Edit to update that business's information, including business type.
Note that any changes that you make here are automatically sent to our banking partners for review, and the new information is re-run through their verification process. It's possible the changes automatically re-verify, but you might also be asked for supporting documents.
If you have any difficulty with this process, then contact Shopify Support for assistance.
What happens if I miss my verification deadline?
You'll see a temporary pause on your payouts until the verification procedure is completed. After the first deadline is hit and payouts are temporarily paused, you might see a second deadline indicating when your ability to accept orders with Shopify Payments will be temporarily paused.
All of these pauses are temporary, and will be automatically lifted once you complete verification. Reference your admin page for your deadlines.
Starting in June of 2026, brand new Shopify Payments Portugal accounts have 90 days from first order processed to complete verification. If 90 days pass, then any orders that you processed using Shopify Payments might be automatically refunded.
This refund policy applies only to European countries, and only to brand new accounts created on or after June of 2026. If this refund policy applies to you, then warnings will tell the store owner when they can expect the refunds to process.
