Bank account and personal information requirements for using Shopify Payments in Lithuania

Before using Shopify Payments in Lithuania, you need to understand the requirements that are in place to comply with regulations and to prevent financial crimes. Personal information is collected to verify your identity and business details, and certain types of documentation are accepted for this purpose.

Requirements for using Shopify Payments in Lithuania

Before you use Shopify Payments in Lithuania, ensure that you meet the following requirements:

  • Eligible business types: Certain types of businesses and services aren't permitted to use Shopify Payments. To determine whether your business is eligible, refer to the list of prohibited business types for Lithuania in the Shopify Payments Terms of Service.

Unsupported bank account types

Certain bank account types aren't compatible with Shopify Payments. The following account types aren't supported:

  • Checking accounts that accept only wire transfers: These accounts don't work with Shopify Payments.
  • Savings accounts: Savings accounts can't be used for Shopify Payments payouts.
  • Flex-currency accounts: Accounts that support multiple currencies simultaneously aren't supported.
  • Money transfer services: Services that mimic bank accounts, such as some fintech platforms, can't be used with Shopify Payments.

Although non-Shopify virtual accounts are supported, you can experience more payout failures with these accounts.

To confirm whether your account can accept the transfer type listed for your region, contact your bank.

Purpose of collecting information

Shopify and its banking partners are required to collect and verify information about you and your business to comply with regulations in Lithuania that are designed to prevent financial crimes. As local rules and regulations evolve, you might be contacted by Shopify and its banking partners to provide additional information throughout the lifespan of your Shopify Payments account.

The information that's collected is used to confirm the identity of the business, the identities of individuals linked to the business, and the nature of the relationship between the two.

Shopify never physically mails documentation to you. Any important documents or communications are emailed, or made digitally available to the store owner in the Settings > Users page of your Shopify admin.

Review Shopify's Privacy Policy to learn about how your information is kept confidential and safe.

Required personal and business information for activating Shopify Payments in Lithuania

Ensure that you correctly identify your business type because it determines the information that you need to provide.

If you haven't registered with any government agency, or you have registered but run the business as a sole proprietorship (including individuali veikla, sole traders, and the self-employed), then select the Individual / Sole proprietorship business type.

If you have registered your business and have a Legal Entity Code (Juridinių asmenų registro kodas), then select your business type based on the following guidance:

  • Partnerships with legal entity codes (MB, TŪB, KŪB) must select the registered partnership business type.
  • Non-profit organizations with legal entity codes must select the registered non-profit business type.
  • All other businesses with legal entity codes must select the private corporation business type. Common examples are UAB and IĮ.

If you have a registered business, but don't have a legal entity code, then select your business type based on the following guidance:

  • Partnerships without legal entity codes must select the unregistered partnership business type.
  • Non-profit organizations and charities that don't have legal entity codes must select the unregistered non-profit business type.

If you're not sure what business type to pick, then contact Shopify Support for help with selecting the right one.

Individuals / Sole proprietorships

Individuals are single owner businesses that haven't registered with the government and are doing business privately. Sole proprietorships are single owner businesses who are registered with the government under their personal information. Both are businesses that are owned and controlled by one individual living in Lithuania. This includes freelancers and self-employed small business operators.

These business types are treated the same way and must provide the same information. Individuals and sole proprietorships must provide:

  • Legal first and last name: Your full legal name as it appears on government-issued documentation.
  • Date of birth: Your birth date.
  • Email address: A valid and active email address.
  • Phone number: A valid and active phone number.
  • Residential address in Lithuania: Your home address, matching your documentation.

If your information can't be verified automatically, then you'll receive a request to verify your identity. If any of your information such as your name, date of birth, or home address, is incorrect, then you should update your account information.

If the information is correct and you still receive a request for verification, then you can resolve the request by completing either one of the following tasks:

  • Confirm your identity by taking a selfie with a valid photo ID.
  • Upload separate proof of identity and proof of address documents in your Shopify admin.
    • The information on your documents must match what you enter on your account exactly. Update your account information to match your documents if needed.
Private corporation (UAB, IĮ)

A private corporation is a business whose equity is divided into shares, owned by shareholders. A corporation is considered its own legal entity, separate from the people who run it. They typically also have a board of directors.

Private corporations must assign either a beneficial owner or an executive with decision-making power as their account representative. The account representative must provide the following information:

  • Legal first and last name: Your full legal name as it appears on government-issued documentation.
  • Date of birth: Your birth date.
  • Email address: A valid and active email address.
  • Phone number: A valid and active phone number.
  • Residential address: Your home address, matching your documentation.
  • Job title: The job title you hold with the business.
  • Equity: If applicable, the equity percentage you own of the business.

Private corporations also need to provide the following details about the business:

  • Registered business name: The legal business name as shown in government business registries.
  • Legal Entity Code (Juridinių asmenų registro kodas): The business's legal entity code as shown in government business registries.
  • VAT number: Your VAT registration number, if applicable.
  • Business phone number: An active contact phone number for the business.
  • Business address: The official registered address of the business as shown in government business registries.

Shopify banking partners verify your information by comparing it against government registries in Lithuania. Pay careful attention to case, punctuation, and symbols.

If the information that you provide about the business can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. When providing this document, ensure that the registered name, legal entity code, and business address listed in your account match exactly with the information on the document, and update the information in your account to match the document if necessary. Review the list of acceptable business documents.

You must additionally list any other people who are beneficial owners of the company. Ensure you enter their names, dates of birth, and home addresses exactly as shown on their government documents. If their identities can't be verified automatically, then they might need to provide photo ID or proof of address.

The owners that you provide must match against the owners listed in your government's business registry. If a mismatch is detected, then you'll be asked to either complete the attestation process by clicking the Sign button, or provide a proof of ownership document. Signing the attestation is the quickest way to resolve the mismatch, but if you'd prefer to submit a document, then ensure the names of the owners listed on your account match exactly with the owners listed on your document. Update the information on your account to match your document, if necessary. If your business is owned by a holding company (either wholly or partly), then sign the attestation to complete verification.

If your business has no owners, then you'll be asked to either sign an attestation, or provide a document confirming your directors instead. If you'd prefer to submit a document, then ensure the names of the directors listed on your account match exactly with the directors listed on your document. Update the information on your account to match your document, if necessary.

Registered partnerships (MB, TŪB, KŪB)

A registered partnership is a business owned by at least two partners, who have registered for commercial activity and obtained a legal entity code. Registered partnerships have equity, and the partnership is its own entity, separate from the owners.

Registered partnerships must designate an owner or partner as the account representative of their Shopify Payments account.

  • Business address: The official registered address of the business as shown in government business registries.

If the information you provide about the business can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. When providing this document, ensure that the registered name, legal entity code, and business address listed in your account match exactly with the information on the document, and update the information in your account to match the document if necessary. Review the list of acceptable business documents.

You must additionally list any other people who are owners or partners.

Unregistered partnerships

An unregistered partnership is a business owned by at least two partners, who haven't registered for a legal entity code, but who have a partnership agreement. The owners are considered the legal entity in this case, and the business is not a separate entity.

Unregistered partnerships must designate an owner as the account representative of their Shopify Payments account. The account representative must provide the following information:

  • Legal first and last name: Your full legal name as it appears on government-issued documentation.
  • Date of birth: Your birth date.
  • Email address: A valid and active email address.
  • Phone number: A valid and active phone number.

Unregistered partnerships also need to provide the following details about their business:

  • Registered business name: The legal business name as shown on documentation.
  • VAT number: Your VAT registration number, if applicable.
  • Business phone number: An active contact phone number for the business.
  • Business address: The official registered address of the business as shown on documentation.

Shopify banking partners verify your information by comparing it against government registries in Lithuania. Pay careful attention to case, punctuation, and symbols.

If the information you provide about the business can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. When providing this document, ensure that the registered name and business address listed in your account match exactly with the information on the document, and update the information in your account to match the document if necessary. Review the list of acceptable business documents.

You must additionally list any other people who are owners or partners. Ensure you enter their names, dates of birth, and home addresses exactly as shown on their government documents. If their identities can't be verified automatically, then they might need to provide photo ID or proof of address.

The owners that you provide must match against the owners listed in your government's business registry. Acceptable document types

This section explains which documents you can use to verify your identity and business details.

  • Pasas (Passport)
  • Asmens tapatybės kortelė (Identity card)
  • Vairuotojo pažymėjimas (Driver's license)

Address documents

  • Komunalinių mokesčių sąskaita (Utility bill) - dated within the last 6 months
  • Išrašas iš finansų institucijos (Statement from a financial institution) - dated within the last 6 months
  • Vyriausybės institucijos laiškas (Letter issued from a government institution) - dated within the last 6 months

Business verification documents

The following documents are accepted for business verification. They must clearly display the legal entity name, legal entity code, and address of your business. The details on your Shopify Payments account must be updated to match the information displayed in the documents that you're providing:

  • Lietuvos Respublikos juridinių asmenų registro išplėstinis išrašas (Extract from the register of entities)
  • Registravimo pažymėjimas (Registration certificate)
  • PVM mokėtojo registracija (VAT registration)

Ownership documents

The following documents are accepted as proof of ownership or directorship, provided that they display the legal entity name of your business, and all of the complete names of the owners or directors of your business. The same documents can be used to verify either owners or directors:

  • Metinė ataskaita (Annual Reports)
  • Įmonės registro išrašas (Certificate of Corporate Status)
  • Registracijos dokumentas (Registration Document)
  • Faktinių naudotojų registras (Ultimate Beneficial Owner Register)

Every beneficial owner listed in your documentation must also be listed in your Shopify Payments account and assigned the role of Owner. A beneficial owner is defined as someone who owns 25% or more of the business equity. Update the information in your account to match the document if necessary.

If your business does not have any beneficial owners, then you'll be required to verify your directors instead. Each director listed in your documentation must also be listed in your Shopify Payments account and assigned the role of Director. Update the information in your account to match the document if necessary.

If your business is owned by a holding company, then please ensure your owners and directors are correctly entered first, and then complete the digital attestation process instead by pressing the Sign button.

Ensuring documentation compliance

When providing your documents, ensure that they meet the necessary criteria. Review the following guidelines to ensure compliance:

  • Accuracy: Ensure that the information on your documents matches what you've entered in your Shopify Payments account. Update your account to match your documents, if necessary.
  • Clarity and legibility: Make sure that your documents are clear and large enough to read. Ensure the entire document is visible in the photograph.
  • Completeness: Ensure all the necessary details are visible on your document. Review the acceptable document types listed on this page to understand what details must be included on the document.
  • Original documentation: Take an original photograph of your document using a camera. Don't photocopy, scan, or screenshot your documents. Don't paste photos of documents into other documents. Don't take photos of computer screens or printouts.
    • If your document was issued to you digitally, then provide the PDF file with all pages as it was originally given to you, with no alterations.
  • Validity: Ensure photo IDs aren't expired and that proof of address is recently issued. If providing proof of business registration, then your business should still be actively registered and in good standing.

Troubleshooting common issues

Before contacting Shopify Support, review the following common onboarding issues and their solutions.

I'm a partnership in Lithuania being asked for a legal entity code, but I don't have one.

If you're a partnership in Lithuania being asked for a legal entity code, but you don't have one, then you're set up as the incorrect business type. If you're in the process of setting up your Shopify Payments account, then update the business type to unregistered partnership.

If you've already set up the account and are being asked for a legal entity code as part of your verification process, then you can update your business type by going to Settings > General. Click the three dots beside your business details, and then click Edit. If you have any difficulty with updating your business type, then contact Shopify Support for assistance.

My document was rejected.

Ensure the information on your account matches your document exactly, and update your account if needed. If your documents are still being rejected, then refer to the following sections on this page:

My address can't be automatically verified.

For Shopify Payments Lithuania, if your address can't be automatically verified, then you'll be asked to either complete the selfie process, or to provide a proof of address document.

Completing the selfie process is recommended. The individual who requires verification can click the Selfie button and then take a photograph of their photo ID and themselves, in order to verify. You can complete the selfie process instead of providing a proof of address document.

If you'd prefer to provide a document manually, then you can do that instead. Proof of address documents must show your full name and home address, and be one of the document types shown here. You should also ensure the following:

  1. The address you entered in your Shopify Payments account matches exactly with the address on your proof of address document.
  2. Update the information in your account to match your document if necessary.
  3. The document is dated within the past 6 months.
  4. Upload a clear photograph of your proof of address document.
  5. The document you're uploading lists your own full name. If, for example, you have a utility bill in someone else's name, then you need to provide a different document.
My owner information can't be verified.

For Shopify Payments Lithuania, you're required to enter your owners so that the names listed match against the owners listed for your business on your government's business registry. It's recommended that you look up your owner information in the registry and enter the names exactly as shown there. If you have no owners, then you must list all of your directors on the account instead.

If you have done so and your ownership or directorship still can't be verified, then it's recommended that you click the Sign button on your verification page to digitally attest that the information that you have provided is correct.

If you'd prefer, then you can provide a document confirming who your owners or directors are, instead of using the attestation process. The owner and director information that you enter on your Shopify Payments account must match the information on the documentation that you upload. If an owner or director is listed on your documentation, but isn't added to your Shopify Payments account, then you must add that person to your account and assign them the Owner or Director role. A list of the document types that you can provide to verify ownership is available here.

You should make sure that the owners and directors on your account are a 1:1 match with your documentation. Don't list extra owners or directors that aren't shown on your documents.

My business information isn't being verified.

Shopify banking partners verify your business information by comparing it against government registries in Lithuania. If your business can't be verified, then check the following details:

  • Ensure that your registered business name matches exactly as it appears in government business registries, including letter case, punctuation, and symbols.
  • Ensure that your legal entity code is correct.
  • Ensure that your business address matches the address listed in the government business registry.

If your information still can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. Ensure that the information on your document matches what you've entered in your Shopify Payments account.

I don't have a legal entity code in Lithuania, but I'm not an individual or sole proprietorship.

If you don't have a legal entity code, then you can select only unregistered partnership or unregistered non-profit as your business type. You must still provide documentation that shows your business is registered as said business type in Lithuania.

If neither of these business types fits your business, then you should select Individual / Sole proprietorship and assign a key decision maker or owner as the account representative.

Frequently asked questions

Review the following frequently asked questions about Shopify Payments requirements in Lithuania.

Why do you need my photo ID or proof of address if I'm a company, partnership, or non-profit in Lithuania?

Even if you're entered as a company, partnership, or non-profit, our banking partners are required by regulatory laws in Lithuania to verify the identities of the people associated with the business, including their identities and where they're located.

I'm a citizen of Lithuania but don't currently live there. Can I use Shopify Payments Lithuania?

If your business type is individual, then you're required to live in Lithuania to be eligible for Shopify Payments Lithuania. If you don't currently live in Lithuania, then you should instead create a Shopify Payments account for the region you do live in.

Update your store address to your current location. If your location is eligible for Shopify Payments, then you can create a Shopify Payments account for that region instead.

If you're a type of partnership, company, or non-profit, then you're not required to personally live in Lithuania, but your business is required to be registered there and have a Lithuanian business address. If you need help, then contact Shopify Support.

I'm a sole proprietor in Lithuania. Can I give you my business registration?

For the purposes of business and identity verification in Lithuania, only the personal information of the owner is required if you're a sole trader.

If you're a sole proprietor, then don't attempt to sign up as a different business type. You might have difficulty passing verification.

I'm a publicly traded company in Lithuania. Which business type should I pick?

Select Private corporation. For the purposes of business and identity verification, the process for public and privately owned companies is identical. You can skip past the section of the account setup form that requests that you add owners. You're not required to list any beneficial owners, if you have none.

If you're a publicly traded company in Lithuania, you've already set up the Shopify Payments account, and now you're being asked for ownership information as part of your verification process, then update your ownership details to reflect that you have no owners. Remove the Owner role from any people on file, and instead ensure all your directors are listed on the account and have the Director role assigned.

You might be asked to confirm that the listed directorship is correct. If you can confirm that it looks correct, then click the Sign button to digitally attest to the information on file.

If you have any difficulty with this process, then contact Shopify Support for assistance.

How do I update my Shopify Payments account information?

If you're actively being asked to complete account verification, then you can make any updates to your information from the verification page, along with submitting any documents that are being requested.

Outside of the verification process, the store owner can update these details through Settings > General > Business Details. Click the three dots beside your business entity and then click Edit to update that business's information, including business type.

Note that any changes you make here are automatically sent to our banking partners for review, and the new information is re-run through their verification process. It's possible that the changes automatically re-verify, but you might also be asked for supporting documents.

What happens if I miss my verification deadline?

You'll see a temporary pause on your payouts until the verification procedure is completed. After the first deadline is hit and payouts are temporarily paused, you might see a second deadline indicating when your ability to accept orders with Shopify Payments will be temporarily paused.

All of these pauses are temporary, and are automatically lifted after you complete verification. Reference your admin page for your deadlines.

Starting in June 2026, brand new Shopify Payments Lithuania accounts have 90 days from the first order processed to complete verification. If 90 days pass, then any orders that you processed using Shopify Payments might be automatically refunded.

This refund policy applies only to European countries, and only to brand new accounts created on or after June 2026. If this refund policy applies to you, then warnings will tell the store owner when they can expect the refunds to process.
