To confirm whether your account can accept the transfer type listed for your region, contact your bank.
Purpose of collecting information

Review Shopify's Privacy Policy to learn about how your information is kept confidential and safe.
Required personal and business information for activating Shopify Payments in Italy
It's important that you correctly identify your business type because it determines the information that you need to provide.
If you have a registered business with the Chamber of Commerce and have an Repertorio delle notizie Economiche e Amministrative (RI or REA number), then you can choose one of the following incorporated business types, depending on your business structure:
- Private Corporation (Examples: SRL, SRLS)
- Incorporated Partnership (Examples: SAS, SNC)
- Incorporated Non Profit (Examples: Associazione riconosciuta, Fondazione)
If you've got a registered business, but you don't have an RI or REA number, then you can choose your business type based on the following guidance:
- General partnerships without RI/REA numbers (Example: SS) can select Unincorporated Partnership.
- Non profit organizations and charities who don't have RI/REA numbers (Example: Associazione non riconosciuta) can select Unincorporated Non Profit.
If none of these options apply to your business, then select Individual / Sole Trader as your business type.
Review the following details of the information that's required for each business type.
Individuals / Sole Traders
Individuals are single owner businesses that haven't registered with the government and are doing business privately. Sole traders are single owner businesses who are registered with the government under their personal information. Both are businesses that are owned and controlled by one individual living in Ireland. This includes freelancers and self-employed small business operators.
The person doing the business should be the account representative and must provide the following information:
- Legal first and last names: Your full legal name as it's displayed on your government-issued documentation.
- Date of birth: Your birth date, formatted as DD/MM/YYYY.
- Italian Tax Code (Codice Fiscale): Your personal Italian Tax Code.
- Email address: A valid and active email address for account-related communications.
- Phone number: A contact phone number in Italy.
- Residential address in Italy: Your home address, matching your government documentation.
If your information can't be verified automatically, then you'll receive a request to verify your identity. If any of your information, such as your name, date of birth, or home address, is incorrect, then you should update your account information.
If the information is correct and you still receive a request for verification, then you can resolve the request by completing either one of the following tasks:
- Confirm your identity by taking a selfie with a valid photo ID.
- Upload separate proof of identity and proof of address documents in your Shopify admin.
- The information on your documents must match the information on your account exactly. Update your account information to match your documents, if needed.

Every beneficial owner listed in your documentation must also be listed in your Shopify Payments account and assigned the role of Owner. A beneficial owner is defined as someone who owns 25% or more of the business equity. Update the information in your account to match the document if necessary.
If your business does not have any beneficial owners, you will be required to verify your directors instead. In these cases, the same list of documents above are eligible. Each director listed in your documentation must also be listed in your Shopify Payments account and assigned the role of Director. Update the information in your account to match the document if necessary.
If your business is owned by a holding company, then complete the digital attestation process instead by pressing the Sign button.
Ensuring documentation compliance
When providing your documents, ensure that they meet the necessary criteria. Review the following guidelines to ensure compliance:
- Accuracy: Ensure that the information on your documents matches what you've entered in your Shopify Payments account. Update your account to match your documents, if necessary.
- Clarity and legibility: Make sure that your documents are clear and large enough to read. Ensure the entire document is visible in the photograph.
- Completeness: Ensure all the necessary details are visible on your document. Review the acceptable document types listed on this page to understand what details must be included on the document.
- Original documentation: Take an original photograph of your document using a camera. Don't photocopy, scan, or screenshot your documents. Don't paste photos of documents into other documents. Don't take photos of computer screens or printouts.
- If your document was issued to you digitally, then provide the PDF file with all pages as it was originally given to you, with no alterations.
- Validity: Ensure photo IDs aren't expired and that proof of address is recently issued. If providing proof of business registration, then your business should still be actively registered and in good standing.
Troubleshooting common issues
Before contacting Shopify Support, review the following common onboarding issues and their solutions.
My document was rejected.
Ensure the information on your account matches your document exactly, and update your account if needed. If your documents are still being rejected, then refer to the following sections on this page:
- Acceptable document types: Accepted documents and required details. Screenshots, printouts, and registry screenshots aren't accepted.
- Ensuring documentation compliance: Requirements for accuracy, clarity, completeness, and validity.
My business information isn't being verified.
Shopify banking partners verify your business information by comparing it against government registries in Italy. If your business can't be verified, then check the following details:
- Ensure that your registered business name matches exactly as it appears in government business registries, including letter case, punctuation, and symbols.
- Ensure that your RI/REA number is correct.
- Ensure that your business address matches the address listed in the government business registry.
If your information still can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. Ensure that the information on your document matches what you've entered in your Shopify Payments account.
My address can't be automatically verified.
For Shopify Payments Italy, if your address can't be automatically verified, then you'll be asked to either complete the selfie process or provide a proof of address document.
Completing the selfie process is recommended, and can be done instead of providing a proof of address document. The individual who requires verification can click the Selfie button, and then take a photograph of both their photo ID and themselves to verify.
If you'd prefer to provide a document manually, then you can do that instead. Proof of address documents must show your full name and home address, and must be one of the accepted document types. You should also ensure the following:
- Ensure that the address that you entered in your Shopify Payments account matches exactly with the address on your proof of address document.
- Update your account information to match your document, if necessary.
- Upload a clear photograph of your proof of address document.
- Ensure that the document that you're uploading shows your own full name. For example, if you have a utility bill in someone else's name, then you'll need to provide a different document.
My owner information can't be verified.
For Shopify Payments Italy, you're required to enter your beneficial owners so that the names listed match against the owners listed on your business registry. We recommend that you look up your owner information in the applicable registry, and enter the names exactly as shown there. If you have no beneficial owners, then you must list all of your directors on the account instead.
If you've done so and your ownership or directorship still can't be verified, then we recommend that you click the Sign button on your verification page to digitally attest that the information that you've provided is correct. Signing the attestation is the quickest way to resolve the mismatch.
If you'd prefer, then you can provide a document confirming who your owners or directors are, instead of using the attestation process. The owner and director information that you enter on your Shopify Payments account must match the information on the documentation that you upload. If an owner or director is listed on your documentation, but isn't added to your Shopify Payments account, then you must add that person to your account and assign them the Owner or Director role. A list of the types of documents that you can provide to verify ownership is available here.
You should make sure that the owners and directors on your account are a 1:1 match with your documentation. Don't list extra owners or directors that aren't shown on your documents.
Frequently asked questions
Review the following frequently asked questions about Shopify Payments requirements in Italy.
Can my customers pay with Bancomat cards?
Yes. Bancomat cards are widely used in Italy and are typically co-branded with a major card network such as Maestro. Co-branded Bancomat cards work with Shopify Payments in the same way as the card network they're associated with.
However, there are some limitations:
- Bancomat cards issued before 2015 may not be co-branded with a major card network and can't be accepted.
- For online payments, the card must have a card verification value (CVV). Not all Bancomat cards have a CVV, as some are designed for in-person use only.
Most customers know whether their Bancomat card can be used for online payments.
I'm based in Vatican City or San Marino. Can I use Shopify Payments Italy?
No. Shopify Payments Italy isn't available for businesses based in Vatican City or San Marino.
I'm a citizen of Italy but don't currently live there. Can I use Shopify Payments Italy?
If your business type is Individual / Sole Trader, then you must live in Italy to be eligible for Shopify Payments Italy. If you don't currently live in Italy, then you need to create a Shopify Payments account for the region you live in.
Update your store address to your current location. If your location is eligible for Shopify Payments, then you can create a Shopify Payments account for that region instead.
If your business is a partnership, company, or non-profit, then you don't need to live in Italy, but your business must be registered in Italy and have an Italian business address. If you need help, then contact Shopify Support.
Will my personal and business information be kept private?
Yes. Personal information for owners and directors, such as names or home addresses, is kept private and is never shared publicly.
Do I need to be registered with the Chamber of Commerce to use Shopify Payments in Italy?
No. If you don't have an RI or REA number, then you can still use Shopify Payments as either an Unincorporated Partnership, Unincorporated Non Profit, or an Individual / Sole Trader.
Partnerships and non profits will still be required to show documentation proving they are registered in Italy as said business type. If you are not a registered business at all, you should select Individual / Sole Trader.
How do I update my Shopify Payments account information?
If you're actively being asked to complete account verification, then you can make any updates to your information from the verification page, along with submitting any documents that are being requested.
Outside of the verification process, the store owner can update these details through Settings > General > Business Details. Click the button beside your business entity, and then click Edit to update that business's information, including business type.
Note that any changes that you make here are automatically sent to our banking partners for review, and the new information is re-run through their verification process. It's possible that the changes automatically re-verify, but you might also be asked for supporting documents.
What happens if I miss my verification deadline?
You'll see a temporary pause on your payouts until the verification process is completed. After the first deadline is reached and payouts are temporarily paused, you might see a second deadline that indicates when your ability to accept orders with Shopify Payments will be temporarily paused.
All of these pauses are temporary, and are automatically lifted after you complete verification. Refer to your admin page for your deadlines.
Starting in June 2026, brand new Shopify Payments Italy accounts have 90 days from the first order processed to complete verification. If 90 days pass, then any orders that you processed using Shopify Payments might be automatically refunded.
This policy applies only to European countries, and only to brand new accounts that are created on or after June 2026. If this policy applies to you, then warnings will tell the store owner when to expect the refunds to process.
