Review Shopify's Privacy Policy to learn about how your information is kept confidential and safe.
Required personal and business information for activating Shopify Payments in Hungary
You must correctly identify your business type because it determines the information that you need to provide.
If you haven't registered with any government agency, or you have registered but run the business as a sole proprietorship (including egyéni vállalkozó, sole trader, and the self-employed), then select the Individual / Sole proprietor business type.
If you have registered your business and have a company registration number (Cégjegyzékszám), then select your business type based on the following guidance:
- Partnerships with company registration numbers (Bt., Kkt) must select the Registered partnership business type.
- Non-profit organizations with company registration numbers (Egyesület, Alapítvány) must select the Incorporated non-profit business type.
- All other businesses with company registration numbers, such as Kft. or Zrt., must select the Private corporation business type.
If you have a registered business, but don't have a company registration number, then select your business type based on the following guidance:
- Partnerships without company registration numbers (Pjt) must select the Unregistered partnership business type.
- Non-profit organizations and charities who don't have company registration numbers must select the Unincorporated non-profit business type.
If you're not sure what business type to pick, then contact Shopify Support for help with selecting the right one.
Individuals / Sole proprietor
Individuals are single owner businesses that haven't registered with the government and are doing business privately. Sole proprietors are single owner businesses who are registered with the government under their personal information. Both are businesses that are owned and controlled by one individual living in Hungary. This includes freelancers and self-employed small business operators.
These business types are treated the same way and need to provide the same information. Individuals and sole proprietors need to provide:
- Legal first and last name: Your full legal name as it appears on government-issued documentation.
- Date of birth: Your birth date.
- Email address: A valid and active email address.
- Phone number: A valid and active phone number.
- Residential address in Hungary: Your home address, matching your documentation.
If your information can't be verified automatically, then you'll receive a request to verify your identity. If any of your information such as your name, date of birth, or home address, is incorrect, then you should update your account information.
If the information is correct and you still receive a request for verification, then you can resolve the request by completing either one of the following tasks:
- Confirm your identity by taking a selfie with a valid photo ID.
- Upload separate proof of identity and proof of address documents in your Shopify admin.
- The information on your documents must match what you enter on your account exactly. Update your account information to match your documents if needed.
Private corporations (Kft, Zrt)
A private corporation is a business whose equity is divided into shares, owned by shareholders. A corporation is considered its own legal entity, separate from the people who run it. They typically also have a board of directors.
Private corporations must assign either a beneficial owner or an executive with decision-making power as their account representative. The account representative needs to provide the following information:
- Legal first and last name: Your full legal name as it appears on government-issued documentation.
- Date of birth: Your birth date.
- Email address: A valid and active email address.
- Phone number: A valid and active phone number.
- Residential address: Your home address, matching your documentation.
- Job title: The job title you hold with the business.
- Equity: If applicable, the equity percentage you own of the business.
Private corporations also need to provide the following details about the business:
- Registered business name: The legal business name as shown in government business registries.
- Company registration number (Cégjegyzékszám): The business's company registration number as shown in government business registries.
- Value Added Tax (VAT) number: Your VAT registration number, if applicable.
- Business phone number: An active contact phone number for the business.
- Business address: The official registered address of the business as shown in government business registries.
Shopify banking partners verify your information by comparing it against government registries in Hungary. Ensure that you use the correct letter case, punctuation, and symbols.
If the information that you provide about the business can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. When providing this document, ensure that the registered name, company registration number, and business address listed in your account match exactly with the information on the document, and update the information in your account to match the document. Review the list of acceptable business documents.
If you're a beneficial owner of the company, then you also need to list any other people who are beneficial owners. Ensure you enter their names, dates of birth, and home addresses exactly as shown on their government documents. If their identities can't be verified automatically, then they might need to provide photo ID or proof of address.
The owners that you provide must match against the owners listed in your government's business registry. If a mismatch is detected, then you'll be asked to either complete the attestation process by clicking the Sign button, or provide a proof of ownership document. Signing the attestation is the quickest way to resolve the mismatch, but if you'd prefer to submit a document, then ensure the names of the owners listed on your account match exactly with the owners listed on your document. Update the information on your account to match your document, if necessary. If your business is owned by a holding company (either wholly or partly), then sign the attestation to complete verification.
If your business has no owners, then you'll be asked to either sign an attestation, or provide a document confirming your directors instead. If you'd prefer to submit a document, then ensure the names of the directors listed on your account match exactly with the directors listed on your document. Update the information on your account to match your document, if necessary.

The owners that you provide must match against the owners listed in your government's business registry. Unregistered partnerships (Pjt)
An unregistered partnership is a business owned by at least two partners, who haven't registered for a company registration number, but who have a partnership agreement. The owners are considered the legal entity in this case, and the business is not a separate entity.
Unregistered partnerships must designate an owner as the account representative of their Shopify Payments account. The account representative needs to provide the following information:

If the information that you provide about the business can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. When providing this document, ensure that the registered name and business address listed in your account match exactly with the information on the document, and update the information in your account to match the document. Review the list of acceptable business documents.
If you're an owner or partner, then you also need to list any other people who are owners or partners. Ensure you enter their names, dates of birth, and home addresses exactly as shown on their government documents. If your business does not have any beneficial owners, then you'll be required to verify your directors instead. In these cases, the documents listed above for directors are eligible. Each director listed in your documentation must also be listed in your Shopify Payments account and assigned the role of Director. If your business is owned by a holding company, then please complete the digital attestation process instead by pressing the Sign button.
Ensuring documentation compliance
When providing your documents, ensure that they meet the necessary criteria. Review the following guidelines to ensure compliance:
- Accuracy: Ensure that the information on your documents matches what you've entered in your Shopify Payments account. Update your account to match your documents, if necessary.
- Clarity and legibility: Make sure that your documents are clear and large enough to read. Ensure the entire document is visible in the photograph.
- Completeness: Ensure all the necessary details are visible on your document. Review the acceptable document types listed on this page to understand what details must be included on the document.
- Original documentation: Take an original photograph of your document using a camera. Don't photocopy, scan, or screenshot your documents. Don't paste photos of documents into other documents. Don't take photos of computer screens or printouts.
- If your document was issued to you digitally, then provide the PDF file with all pages as it was originally given to you, with no alterations.
- Validity: Ensure photo IDs aren't expired and that proof of address is recently issued. If providing proof of business registration, then your business should still be actively registered and in good standing.
Troubleshooting common issues
Before contacting Shopify Support, review these common onboarding issues and their solutions.
My document was rejected.
Ensure the information on your account matches your document exactly, and update your account if needed. If your documents are still being rejected, then refer to the following sections on this page:
- Acceptable document types: Accepted documents and required details. Screenshots, printouts, and registry screenshots aren't accepted.
- Ensuring documentation compliance: Requirements for accuracy, clarity, completeness, and validity.
My address can't be automatically verified.
For Shopify Payments Hungary, if your address can't be automatically verified, then you'll be asked to either complete the selfie process, or to provide a proof of address document.
Completing the selfie process is recommended. The individual who requires verification can click the Selfie button and then take a photograph of their photo ID and themselves, in order to verify. You can complete the selfie process instead of providing a proof of address document.
If you'd prefer to provide a document manually, then you can do that instead. Proof of address documents must show your full name and home address. Ensure the following:
- The name and address on the document matches exactly with the name and address listed in your Shopify Payments account.
- The document is dated within the past 6 months.
- The document is one of the accepted address document types.
You need to provide a document that shows your own name. For example: If your own name doesn't appear on your utility bills, you should select and provide a different document from the option list.
My owner information can't be verified.
For Shopify Payments Hungary, you're required to enter your owners so that the names listed match against the owners listed for your business on your government's business registry. It's recommended that you look up your owner information in the registry and enter the names exactly as shown there. If you have no owners, then you must list all of your directors on the account instead.
If you have done so and your ownership or directorship still can't be verified, then it's recommended that you click the Sign button on your verification page to digitally attest that the information that you have provided is correct.
If you'd prefer, then you can provide a document confirming who your owners or directors are, instead of using the attestation process. The owner and director information that you enter on your Shopify Payments account must match the information on the documentation that you upload. If an owner or director is listed on your documentation, but isn't added to your Shopify Payments account, then you must add that person to your account and assign them the Owner or Director role. A list of the document types that you can provide to verify ownership is available here.
You should make sure that the owners and directors on your account are a 1:1 match with your documentation. Don't list extra owners or directors that aren't shown on your documents.
My business information isn't being verified.
Shopify banking partners verify your business information by comparing it against government registries in Hungary. If your business can't be verified, then check the following details:
- Ensure that your registered business name matches exactly as it appears in government business registries, including letter case, punctuation, and symbols.
- Ensure that your company registration number (Cégjegyzékszám) is correct.
- Ensure that your business address matches the address listed in the government business registry.
If your information still can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. Ensure that the information on your document matches what you've entered in your Shopify Payments account.
My bank account information isn't working.
Confirm that your account meets the bank account requirements and that you aren't using an unsupported bank account type. A Hungarian IBAN is 28 characters long and starts with the HU prefix.
If your payout fails, then verify that you've entered your account information correctly and that you're using a supported account type. To confirm whether your account can accept SEPA transfers, contact your bank.
My payouts are failing with a virtual bank account.
Virtual bank accounts such as Revolut and Payoneer are accepted for payouts, but have a higher payout failure rate than traditional bank accounts. If your payouts are failing, then consider using a standard bank account instead.
Frequently asked questions
Review these frequently asked questions about Shopify Payments requirements in Hungary.
I'm a company, partnership, or non-profit. Why do you need my photo ID or proof of address?
Even if you're registered as a company, partnership, or non-profit, Shopify banking partners are required by regulatory laws in Hungary to verify the identities of the people associated with the business, including their identities and where they're located.
I'm a citizen of Hungary but I don't currently live there. Can I use Shopify Payments Hungary?
If your business type is individual, then you're required to live in Hungary to be eligible for Shopify Payments Hungary. If you don't currently live in Hungary, then you need to create a Shopify Payments account for the region you do live in.
Update your store address to your current location. If your location is eligible for Shopify Payments, then you can create a Shopify Payments account for that region instead.
If you're a type of partnership, company, or non-profit, then you're not required to personally live in Hungary, but your business is required to be registered there and have a Hungarian business address. If you need help, then contact Shopify Support.
I'm a partnership and you're asking for a company registration number, but I don't have one. What should I do?
If you're a partnership being asked for a company registration number, but you don't have one, then you're set up as the incorrect business type. If you're in the process of setting up the account, then go back to the business type selection screen and select Unregistered partnership.
If you've already set up the account and are being asked for a company registration number as part of your verification process, then you can update your business type by going to Settings > General. Click the three dots beside your business details, and then click Edit. If you have any difficulty with updating your business type, then contact Shopify Support for assistance.
I'm a sole proprietor. How do I enter my business information and company registration number?
For the purposes of business and identity verification, Shopify is only required to collect and verify the personal information of the owner if you're a sole proprietor. Select the business type Individual / Sole Proprietor accordingly.
If you're a sole proprietor, then don't attempt to sign up as a different business type. You might have difficulty passing verification.
I'm a publicly traded company. Which business type should I pick?
Select Private corporation. For the purposes of business and identity verification, the process for public and privately owned companies is identical. You can skip past the section of the account setup form that requests that you add owners. You're not required to list any beneficial owners, if you have none.
If you're a publicly traded company in Hungary, you've already set up the Shopify Payments account, and now you're being asked for ownership information as part of your verification process, then update your ownership details to reflect that you have no owners. Remove the Owner role from any people on file, and instead ensure all your directors are listed on the account and have the Director role assigned.
You might be asked to confirm that the listed directorship is correct. If you can confirm that it looks correct, then click the Sign button to digitally attest to the information on file.
If you have any difficulty with this process, then contact Shopify Support for assistance.
I don't have a company registration number, but I'm not an individual or sole proprietor.
If you don't have a company registration number, then you can only select Unregistered partnership or Unincorporated non-profit as your business type. You still need to provide business documentation that shows your business is registered as said business type in Hungary.
If neither of these business types fits your business, then select Individual / Sole Proprietor and assign a key decision maker or owner as the account representative.
My account was already verified. Why am I being asked to provide new information?
Regulatory and financial partner requirements change over time. When this happens, you might need to provide additional information to remain compliant. You'll receive these requests through a banner or alert in your admin and a corresponding email. You must complete these requests to continue using Shopify Payments.
How do I update my Shopify Payments account information?
If you're actively being asked to complete account verification, then you can make any updates to your information from the verification page, along with submitting any documents that are being requested.
Outside of the verification process, the store owner can update these details through Settings > General > Business Details. Click the three dots beside your business entity and then click Edit to update that business's information, including business type.
Note that any changes you make here are automatically sent to our banking partners for review, and the new information is re-run through their verification process. It's possible that the changes automatically re-verify, but you might also be asked for supporting documents.
What happens if I miss my verification deadline?
You'll see a temporary pause on your payouts until the verification procedure is completed. After the first deadline is hit and payouts are temporarily paused, you might see a second deadline indicating when your ability to accept orders with Shopify Payments will be temporarily paused.
All of these pauses are temporary, and are automatically lifted after you complete verification. Reference your admin page for your deadlines.
Starting in June 2026, brand new Shopify Payments Hungary accounts have 90 days from the first order processed to complete verification. If 90 days pass, then any orders that you processed using Shopify Payments might be automatically refunded.
This refund policy applies only to European countries, and only to brand new accounts created on or after June 2026. If this refund policy applies to you, then warnings will tell the store owner when they can expect the refunds to process.
