Bank account and personal information requirements for Shopify Payments in France

Before using Shopify Payments in France, you need to understand the requirements that are in place to comply with regulations and to prevent financial crimes. This article explains why personal information is collected, the accepted types of documentation, and provides guidance for ensuring that your documentation meets the necessary criteria.

Requirements for using Shopify Payments in France

Before you use Shopify Payments in France, ensure that you meet the following requirements:

  • Eligible business types: Certain types of businesses and services aren't permitted to use Shopify Payments. To determine whether your business is eligible, refer to the list of prohibited business types for France in the Shopify Payments Terms of Service.
  • Business location: Shopify Payments is available to merchants based in mainland France. Shopify Payments isn't available in French Overseas Territories.
  • Bank account requirements: Your bank account must meet the following requirements before you can connect it to Shopify Payments:
    • The bank account must be in EUR currency.
    • The bank account must be eligible for Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) transfers.
    • The bank account must have an International Bank Account Number (IBAN) that starts with any of the following country codes: AT, BE, BG, CH, CY, DE, DK, EE, ES, FI, FR, GB, GI, GR, HR, HU, IE, IT, LT, LU, LV, MC, MT, NL, NO, PL, PT, RO, SE, SI, SK, or SM.

Unsupported bank account types

Certain bank account types aren't compatible with Shopify Payments. The following account types aren't supported:

  • Checking accounts that accept only wire transfers: These accounts don't work with Shopify Payments.
  • Savings accounts: Savings accounts can't be used for Shopify Payments payouts.
  • Flex-currency accounts: Accounts that support multiple currencies simultaneously aren't supported.
  • Money transfer services: Services that mimic bank accounts, such as some fintech platforms, can't be used with Shopify Payments.

Although non-Shopify virtual accounts are supported, you can experience more payout failures with these accounts.

To confirm whether your account can accept the transfer type listed for your region, contact your bank.

Purpose of collecting information

Shopify and its banking partners are required to collect and verify information about you and your business to comply with regulations in France that are designed to prevent financial crimes. As local rules and regulations evolve, you might be contacted by Shopify and its banking partners to provide additional information throughout the lifespan of your Shopify Payments account.

The information that's collected is used to confirm the identity of the business, the identities of individuals linked to the business, and the nature of the relationship between the two.

Shopify never physically mails documentation to you. Any important documents or communications are emailed, or made digitally available to the store owner in the Settings > Users page of your Shopify admin.

Review Shopify's Privacy Policy to learn about how your information is kept confidential and safe.

Required personal and business information for activating Shopify Payments in France

It's important that you correctly identify your business type because it determines the information that you need to provide. The business you choose depends on whether you have a Système d'Identification du Répertoire des Établissements (SIRET) number.

If you don't have a SIRET number, then you must select Individual.

If you do have a SIRET, then you can review your business type - known as forme juridique - by entering the first 9 digits of it, which is called the SIREN - on the DATA INPI website. To select the correct business type, refer to the following guidelines:

  • Enterprises individuelles, micro-entrepreneurs, or auto-entrepreneurs, must select sole proprietorship.

  • Clarity and legibility: Make sure that your documents are clear and large enough to read. Ensure the entire document is visible in the photograph.
  • Completeness: Ensure all the necessary details are visible on your document. Review the acceptable document types listed on this page to understand what details must be included on the document.
  • Original documentation: Take an original photograph of your document using a camera. Don't photocopy, scan, or screenshot your documents. Don't paste photos of documents into other documents. Don't take photos of computer screens or printouts.
    • If your document was issued to you digitally, then provide the PDF file with all pages as it was originally given to you, with no alterations.
  • Validity: Ensure photo IDs aren't expired and that proof of address is recently issued. If providing proof of business registration, then your business should still be actively registered and in good standing.

Troubleshooting common issues

Before contacting Shopify Support, review these common onboarding issues and their solutions.

My document was rejected.

Make sure the information on your account matches the information in the document you're submitting, and update your account to match your documentation if needed. If your documents are still being rejected, then refer to the following sections on this page:

  • Acceptable document types: Which documents are accepted and what details they must include. Screenshots, printouts of online searches, and registry screenshots aren't accepted.
  • Ensuring documentation compliance: Requirements for accuracy, clarity, completeness, original documentation, and validity.
My bank account information isn't working.

Make sure your account meets the requirements and that you're using a supported account type. If your payout fails, then verify that you've entered your account information in the correct format. Refer to the following sections on this page:

My business information isn't being verified.

When entering your business information, ensure that your business name, SIRET number, and address match exactly as they appear in government business registries in France. This includes:

  • Correct letter case (uppercase and lowercase)
  • Correct punctuation and spacing
  • Complete business name as registered

Shopify banking partners verify your information automatically by comparing it against official registries. Even small differences can cause verification to fail. Ensure the documentation you're submitting includes the legal name, SIRET number, and business address, and that these details match what's in your account. Update your account to match your document, if necessary.

My SIRET is only 9 digits long.

Make sure you're entering all 14 digits of your SIRET number. A common mistake is entering only the first 9 digits, which is the SIREN. Your SIRET is your SIREN number followed by 5 additional digits that represent your business location — all 14 digits are required.

You can confirm your full 14-digit SIRET by entering your SIREN on the DATA INPI website.

I'm unable to activate Shopify Payments after creating my store.

In France, you're required to verify your billing payment method through a 3D Secure (3DS) authentication check when you add a payment method to your store. If you haven't completed this check, then you won't be able to activate Shopify Payments.

To resolve this, remove your current billing payment method, re-add it, and complete the 3DS verification step when prompted. If the issue persists, then contact Shopify Support.

My address can't be automatically verified.

For Shopify Payments France, if your address can't be automatically verified, then you'll be asked to either complete the selfie process or provide a proof of address document.

Completing the selfie process is recommended, and can be done instead of providing a proof of address document. The individual who requires verification can click the Selfie button, and then take a photograph of both their photo ID and themselves to verify.

If you'd prefer to provide a document manually, then you can do that instead. Proof of address documents must show your full name and home address, and must be one of the accepted document types. You should also ensure the following:

  1. Ensure that the address that you entered in your Shopify Payments account matches exactly with the address on your proof of address document.
  2. Update your account information to match your document, if necessary.
  3. Upload a clear photograph of your proof of address document.
  4. Ensure that the document that you're uploading shows your own full name. For example, if you have a utility bill in someone else's name, then you'll need to provide a different document.
My owner information can't be verified.

For Shopify Payments France, you're required to enter your beneficial owners so that the names listed match the owners listed for your business in the business registry in France. We recommend that you look up your owner information in the registry, and enter the names exactly as shown there. If you have no beneficial owners, then you must list all of your directors on the account instead.

If you've done so and your ownership or directorship still can't be verified, then we recommend that you click the Sign button on your verification page to digitally attest that the information that you've provided is correct. Signing the attestation is the quickest way to resolve the mismatch.

If you'd prefer, then you can provide a document confirming who your owners or directors are, instead of using the attestation process. The owner and director information that you enter on your Shopify Payments account must match the information on the documentation that you upload. If an owner or director is listed on your documentation, but isn't added to your Shopify Payments account, then you must add that person to your account and assign them the Owner or Director role. A list of the types of documents that you can provide to verify ownership is available here.

Review these frequently asked questions about Shopify Payments requirements in France.

Why do you need my photo ID and proof of address if I'm a company, partnership, or non-profit?

Even if you're set up as a company, partnership, or non-profit, Shopify banking partners are required by regulations in France to verify the identities of the people associated with the business, including who they are and where they're located.

I'm a citizen of France and was born there, but I don't currently live in France. Can I use Shopify Payments in France?

If your business type is Individual or Sole Proprietorship, then you're required to live in mainland France to be eligible for Shopify Payments in France. If you don't currently live in France, then you should create a Shopify Payments account for the region where you do live.

Update your store address to your current location. If your location is eligible for Shopify Payments, then you can create a Shopify Payments account for that region instead.

If you're a partnership, company, or non-profit, then you're not required to personally live in France, but your business must be registered in mainland France and have a French business address. If you need help, then contact Shopify Support.

I'm a micro-entrepreneur or auto-entrepreneur in France. Which business type should I select?

If you're a micro-entrepreneur or auto-entrepreneur, then you should select Sole proprietorship as your business type. You'll need to provide your SIRET number as part of setup. To confirm your business details and SIRET, enter the first 9 digits of your SIRET (your SIREN) on the DATA INPI website.

I'm a publicly traded company in France. Which business type should I pick?

You should select Public company. You can skip the section of the account setup form that asks you to add owners.

You might be asked to confirm that the listed directorship is correct. If you can confirm that it looks correct, then click the Sign button to digitally attest to the information on file.

If you have any difficulty with this process, then contact Shopify Support for assistance.

I don't have a SIRET number, but I'm not an individual. I'm a different kind of business.

In France, all registered business types — including sole proprietorships, private corporations, partnerships, non-profits, public companies, and government entities — require a SIRET number. If you don't have a SIRET number, then you should select Individual as your business type.

If you're unsure which business type applies to your situation, then contact Shopify Support for help with selecting the right one.

Will I be charged VAT on my Shopify Payments processing fees?

No. VAT on Shopify Payments processing fees in France is charged at 0%. If you're VAT registered, then ensure you prefix your VAT number with FR when entering it during setup. French VAT numbers are 11 digits following the prefix — for example, FR12345678912.

I live in a French territory overseas. Can I use Shopify Payments France?

No. Shopify Payments France is currently only available to businesses that are located within mainland France. Territories overseas (such as Martinique, La Réunion, Guadeloupe, or Mayotte, to name a few examples) are not eligible for Shopify Payments at this time.

How do I update my Shopify Payments account information?

If you're actively being asked to complete account verification, then you can make any updates to your information from the verification page, along with submitting any documents that are being requested.

Outside of the verification process, the store owner can update these details through Settings > General > Business Details. Click the Horizontal menu button beside your business entity, and then click Edit to update that business's information, including business type.

Note that any changes that you make here are automatically sent to our banking partners for review, and the new information is re-run through their verification process. It's possible that the changes automatically re-verify, but you might also be asked for supporting documents.

If you have an outstanding Shopify Capital loan, then you might not be able to update some of your business information until after the loan is completely paid off. Your loan was issued to the business currently on file, so the loan can't be transferred to a different business. If you have questions, then contact Shopify Support.

What happens if I miss my verification deadline?

You'll see a temporary pause on your payouts until the verification process is completed. After the first deadline is reached and payouts are temporarily paused, you might see a second deadline that indicates when your ability to accept orders with Shopify Payments will be temporarily paused.

All of these pauses are temporary, and are automatically lifted after you complete verification. Refer to your admin page for your deadlines.

Starting in June 2026, brand new Shopify Payments France accounts have 90 days from the first order processed to complete verification. If 90 days pass, then any orders that you processed using Shopify Payments might be automatically refunded.

This policy applies only to European countries, and only to brand new accounts that are created on or after June 2026. If this policy applies to you, then warnings will tell the store owner when to expect the refunds to process.
