Bank account and personal information requirements for Shopify Payments in Denmark

Before using Shopify Payments in Denmark, you need to understand the requirements that are in place to comply with regulations and to prevent financial crimes. This article explains why personal information is collected, the accepted types of documentation, and provides guidance for ensuring that your documentation meets the necessary criteria.

Requirements for using Shopify Payments in Denmark

Before you use Shopify Payments in Denmark, ensure that you meet the following requirements:

  • Eligible business types: Certain types of businesses and services aren't permitted to use Shopify Payments. To determine whether your business is eligible, refer to the list of prohibited business types for Denmark in the Shopify Payments Terms of Service.
  • Bank account requirements: Your bank account must meet the following requirements before you can connect it to Shopify Payments:
    • The bank account must be in EUR currency or if the bank account is based in Denmark, then it can be in DKK currency.
    • The bank account must be eligible for Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) transfers.

Certain bank account types aren't compatible with Shopify Payments. The following account types aren't supported:

  • Savings accounts: Savings accounts can't be used for Shopify Payments payouts.
  • Flex-currency accounts: Accounts that support multiple currencies simultaneously aren't supported.
  • Money transfer services: Services that mimic bank accounts, such as some fintech platforms, can't be used with Shopify Payments.

Although non-Shopify virtual accounts are supported, you can experience more payout failures with these accounts.

To confirm whether your account can accept the transfer type listed for your region, contact your bank.

Purpose of collecting information

Shopify and its banking partners are required to collect and verify information about you and your business to comply with regulations in Denmark that are designed to prevent financial crimes. As local rules and regulations evolve, you might be contacted by Shopify and its banking partners to provide additional information throughout the lifespan of your Shopify Payments account.

The information that's collected is used to confirm the identity of the business, the identities of individuals linked to the business, and the nature of the relationship between the two.

Shopify never physically mails documentation to you. Any important documents or communications are emailed, or made digitally available to the store owner in the Settings > Users page of your Shopify admin.

Review Shopify's Privacy Policy to learn about how your information is kept confidential and safe.

Required personal and business information for activating Shopify Payments in Denmark

You must correctly identify your business type because it determines the information that you need to provide.

If you haven't registered with any government agency, or you have registered but run the business as a sole proprietorship, then select the Individual business type.

If you have registered your business and have a Central Business Register (CVR) number, then select your business type based on the following guidance:

  • Partnerships with CVR numbers, such as I/S, P/S, or K/S, must select the Incorporated partnership business type.
  • Non-profit organizations with CVR numbers must select the Registered non-profit business type.
  • All other businesses with CVR numbers, such as ApS or AmbA, must select the Private corporation business type.

If you have a registered business, but don't have a CVR number, then select your business type based on the following guidance:

  • Partnerships without CVR numbers must select the Unincorporated partnership business type.
  • Non-profit organizations and charities who don't have CVR numbers must select the Unregistered non-profit business type.

If you're not sure what business type to pick, then contact Shopify Support for help with selecting the right one.

Individuals

Individuals are single owner businesses that haven't registered with the government and are doing business privately. This includes enkeltmandsvirksomhed, sole traders, sole proprietorships, and the self-employed, even if they have obtained CVR numbers.

Individuals need to provide:

  • Legal first and last name: Your full legal name as it appears on government-issued documentation.
  • Date of birth: Your birth date.
  • Email address: A valid and active email address.
  • Phone number: A valid and active phone number.
  • Residential address in Denmark: Your home address, matching your documentation.

If your information can't be verified automatically, then you'll receive a request to verify your identity. If any of your information such as your name, date of birth, or home address, is incorrect, then you should update your account information.

If the information is correct and you still receive a request for verification, then you can resolve the request by completing either one of the following tasks:

  • Confirm your identity by taking a selfie with a valid photo ID.
  • Upload separate proof of identity and proof of address documents in your Shopify admin.
    • The information on your documents must match what you enter on your account exactly. Update your account information to match your documents if needed.
Private corporations (ApS, AmbA)

A private corporation is a business whose equity is divided into shares, owned by shareholders. A corporation is considered its own legal entity, separate from the people who run it. They typically also have a board of directors.

Private corporations must assign either a beneficial owner or an executive with decision-making power as their account representative. The account representative needs to provide the following information:

  • Legal first and last name: Your full legal name as it appears on government-issued documentation.
  • Date of birth: Your birth date.
  • Email address: A valid and active email address.
  • Phone number: A valid and active phone number.
  • Residential address: Your home address, matching your documentation.
  • Job title: The job title you hold with the business.
  • Equity: If applicable, the equity percentage you own of the business.

Private corporations also need to provide the following details about the business:

  • Registered business name: The legal business name as shown in the business registry.
  • Central Business Register number (CVR): The business's CVR as shown in the business registry.
  • Value Added Tax (VAT) number: Your VAT registration number, if applicable.
  • Business phone number: An active contact phone number for the business.
  • Business address: The official registered address of the business as shown in the business registry.

Shopify banking partners verify your information by comparing it against government registries in Denmark. Ensure that you use the correct letter case, punctuation, and symbols.

If the information that you provide about the business can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. When providing this document, ensure that the registered name, CVR, and business address listed in your account match exactly with the information on the document, and update the information in your account to match the document. Review the list of acceptable business documents.

You must additionally list any other people who are beneficial owners of the business. Ensure you enter their names, dates of birth, and home addresses exactly as shown on their government documents. If their identities can't be verified automatically, then they might need to provide photo ID or proof of address.

The owners you provide must match against the owners listed in your government's business registry. If a mismatch is detected, you'll be asked to either complete the attestation process by clicking the "sign" button, or provide a proof of ownership document. Signing the attestation is fast and simple, but if you'd prefer to submit a document, ensure the names of the owners listed on your account matches exactly with the owners listed on your document. Update the information on your account to match your document, if necessary. If your business is owned by a holding company (either wholly or partly), sign the attestation to complete verification.

If your business has no owners you'll be asked to either sign an attestation, or provide a document confirming your directors instead. If you'd prefer to submit a document, ensure the names of the directors listed in your account matches exactly with the directors listed on your document. Update the information on your account to match your document, if necessary.

Unincorporated partnerships

An unincorporated partnership is a business owned by at least two partners, who haven't registered for a CVR number, but who have a partnership agreement. The owners are considered the legal entity in this case, and the business is not a separate entity.

Unincorporated partnerships must designate an owner as the account representative of their Shopify Payments account. The account representative needs to provide the following information:

  • Legal first and last name: Your full legal name as it appears on government-issued documentation.

  • Value Added Tax (VAT) number: Your VAT registration number, if applicable.

  • Business address: The official registered address of the business as shown on documentation.

Shopify banking partners verify your information by comparing it against government registries in Denmark. Ensure that you use the correct letter case, punctuation, and symbols.

If the information that you provide about the business can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. When providing this document, ensure that the registered name and business address listed in your account match exactly with the information on the document, and update the information in your account to match the document. Review the list of acceptable business documents.

You must additionally list any other people who are beneficial owners of the business. Ensure you enter their names, dates of birth, and home addresses exactly as shown on their government documents. Acceptable document types

This section explains which documents you can use to verify your identity and business details.

Identity documents

The name and date of birth on your Shopify Payments account must be updated to match the information shown in the identity document that you're providing. The documents must be valid and must not be expired. For all documents except passports, photographs of both the front and back are required. The following documents are accepted as proof of identity:

  • Passport
  • Driver's license
  • City of Copenhagen identity card
  • Residence permit
  • Military identity card
  • Police identity card

Address documents

The name and address on your Shopify Payments account must be updated to match the information displayed in the address documents that you're providing. Photo ID cards (such as a driver's license) can be submitted only once as either an identity document or an address document. If you've already submitted your photo ID as proof of identity, then you must select a different document from the list as proof of address.

All documents must display an issuance date within the past 6 months, apart from documents with a unique expiry date. The following documents are accepted as proof of address:

  • Utility bill
  • Bank account statement
  • Mortgage statement
  • Health insurance card (Sundhedskort / sygesikringskort)
  • Tax assessment (Skattevurdering)
  • Rental Contract

Business verification documents

The following documents are accepted for business verification. They must clearly display the legal entity name, Central Business Register number (CVR), and address of your business. The details on your Shopify Payments account must be updated to match the information displayed in the documents that you're providing:

  • Commercial register extract (Udskrift af handelsregisteruddrag)
  • Registration certificate (Registreringsattest)
  • VAT registration (Momsregistrering)
  • By-laws (Vedtægter)
  • Financial statements (Regnskaber)

Ownership documents

The following documents are accepted as proof of ownership, provided that they display the legal entity name of your business, and all of the complete names of the owners of your business.

  • Ultimate Beneficial Owner Register (Register over reelle ejere)
  • Certificate of Corporate Status (Udskrift fra Erhvervsstyrelsen)
  • Partnership Agreements (Kommanditkontrakt)
  • Registration Document (Stiftelsesdokument)

Every beneficial owner listed in your documentation must also be listed in your Shopify Payments account and assigned the role of "Owner". A beneficial owner is defined as someone who owns 25% or more of the business equity. Update the information in your account to match the document if necessary.

If your business does not have any beneficial owners, you will be required to verify your directors instead. In these cases, the same list of documents above are eligible. Each director listed in your documentation must also be listed in your Shopify Payments account and assigned the role of "Director". Update the information in your account to match the document if necessary.

If your business is owned by a holding company, please complete the digital attestation process instead by pressing the "sign" button.

Ensuring documentation compliance

When providing your documents, ensure that they meet the necessary criteria. Review the following guidelines to ensure compliance:

  • Accuracy: Ensure that the information on your documents matches what you've entered in your Shopify Payments account. Update your account to match your documents, if necessary.
  • Clarity and legibility: Make sure that your documents are clear and large enough to read. Ensure the entire document is visible in the photograph.
  • Completeness: Ensure all the necessary details are visible on your document. Review the acceptable document types listed on this page to understand what details must be included on the document.
  • Original documentation: Take an original photograph of your document using a camera. Don't photocopy, scan, or screenshot your documents. Don't paste photos of documents into other documents. Don't take photos of computer screens or printouts.
    • If your document was issued to you digitally, then provide the PDF file with all pages as it was originally given to you, with no alterations.
  • Validity: Ensure photo IDs aren't expired and that proof of address is recently issued. If providing proof of business registration, then your business should still be actively registered and in good standing.

Troubleshooting common issues

Before contacting Shopify Support, review the following common onboarding issues and their solutions.

I'm a partnership in Denmark being asked for a CVR number, but I don't have one.

If you're a partnership in Denmark being asked for a Central Business Register (CVR) number, but you don't have one, then you're set up as the incorrect business type. If you're in the process of setting up your Shopify Payments account, then go back to the business type selection screen and select the Unincorporated partnership business type.

If you've already set up the account and are being asked for a CVR as part of your verification process, then you can update your business type by going to Settings > General. Click the 3 dots beside your business details, and then click "edit". If you have any difficulty with updating your business type, contact Shopify Support for assistance.

I don't have a CVR number, and I'm not an individual or sole trader.

If you don't have a CVR number, then you can only select Unincorporated partnership or Unregistered non-profit as your business type. You must still provide documentation that shows your business is registered as said business type in Denmark.

If neither of these business types fits your business, then select the Individual business type and assign a key decision maker or owner as the account representative.

My document was rejected.

Ensure the information on your Shopify Payments account matches the information in the document you're submitting, and update your account to match your documentation if needed. If your documents are still being rejected, then refer to the following sections on this page:

  • Acceptable document types: Which documents are accepted and what details they must include. Screenshots, printouts of online searches, and registry screenshots aren't accepted.
  • Ensuring documentation compliance: Requirements for accuracy, clarity, completeness, original documentation, and validity.
My business information isn't being verified.

When entering your business information, ensure that your business name, CVR number, and business address match exactly as they appear in the Central Business Register. This includes:

  • Correct letter case (uppercase and lowercase)
  • Correct punctuation and spacing
  • Complete business name as registered

Shopify banking partners verify your information automatically by comparing it against official registries in Denmark. Even small differences can cause verification to fail. Ensure the documentation you're submitting includes the legal name, CVR number, and business address, and that these details match what appears on your account. Update your account to match your document, if necessary.

My address can't be automatically verified.

For Shopify Payments Denmark, if your address can't be automatically verified, then you'll be asked to either complete the selfie process, or to provide a proof of address document.

Completing the selfie process is recommended: The individual who requires verification can click the "selfie" button and then take a photograph of their photo ID, and themselves, in order to verify. This can be done instead of providing a proof of address document.

If you would prefer to provide a document manually, you can do that instead. Proof of address documents must show your full name, home address, and be one of the document types shown here. You should also ensure:

  1. Ensure the address you entered in your Shopify Payments account matches exactly with the address on your proof of address document.
  2. Update your information in your account to match your document if necessary.
  3. Upload a clear photograph of your proof of address document.
  4. Ensure the document you're uploading shows your own full name. If for example, you have a utility bill in someone else's name, you'll need to provide a different document.
My owner information can't be verified.

For Shopify Payments Denmark, you're required to enter your owners so that the names listed match against the owners listed for your business on your government's business registry. We recommend looking up your owner information in the registry and entering the names as exactly shown there. If you have no owners, you must list all of your directors on the account instead.

If you have done so and your ownership or directorship still cannot be verified, we recommend clicking the "sign" button on your verification page to digitally attest that the information you have provided is correct. This process is fast and simple.

If you would prefer you can provide a document confirming who your owners or directors are, instead of using the attestation process. The owner and/or director information that you enter on your Shopify Payments account must match the information on the documentation that you upload. If an owner/director is listed on your documentation, but isn't added to your Shopify Payments account, then you must add that person to your account and assign them the Owner and/or Director role. A list of what types of documents you can provide to verify ownership is available here.

You should make sure the owners and directors on your account are a 1:1 match with your documentation. Do not list extra owners/directors that are not shown on your documents.

Frequently asked questions

Review the following frequently asked questions about Shopify Payments requirements in Denmark.

Why do you need my photo ID or proof of address if I'm a company, partnership, or non-profit?

Even if you're registered as a company, partnership, or non-profit, Shopify banking partners must verify the identities and locations of the people associated with the business to comply with regulatory laws in Denmark.

I'm a citizen of Denmark but don't currently live there. Can I use Shopify Payments Denmark?

If your business type is individual, then you're required to live in Denmark to be eligible for Shopify Payments Denmark. If you don't currently live in Denmark, then you should instead create a Shopify Payments account for the region you do live in.

Update your store address to your current location. If your location is eligible for Shopify Payments, you can then create a Shopify Payments account for that region instead.

If you're a type of partnership, company, or non-profit, then you're not required to personally live in Denmark, but your business is required to be registered there and have a Danish business address. If you need help, then contact Shopify Support.

I'm a sole proprietorship, sole trader, or enkeltmandsvirksomhed. How do I enter my business information?

For the purposes of business and identity verification in Denmark, only the personal information of the owner is required if you're a sole proprietor. Select the Individual business type, as the processes are identical.

If you're a sole proprietor, then don't attempt to sign up as a different business type. You might have difficulty passing verification.

I'm a publicly traded company in Denmark. Which business type should I pick?

You should pick private corporation. For the purposes of business verification, the process for public and privately owned companies is identical. You can skip past the section of the account setup form that requests that you add owners. You are not required to list any beneficial owners, if you have none.

If you're a publicly traded company in Denmark, you've already set up the Shopify Payments account, and now you are being asked for ownership information as part of your verification process, update your ownership details to reflect that you have no owners. Remove the "owner" role from any people on file, and instead ensure all your directors are listed on the account and have the "director" role assigned.

You may be asked to confirm that the listed directorship is correct. If you can confirm it looks correct, click the "sign" button to digitally attest to the information on file.

If you have any difficulty with this process, contact Shopify Support for assistance.

What are the payment capture rules for Denmark?

Danish law requires that payment for an online order can only be captured after the product has been shipped or the service has been activated. If you use Shopify Payments, there's a 7-day window for capturing payments. If your delivery times exceed this window, you might need to adjust your payment capture settings.

To comply with this regulation, consider changing your payment capture to manual. If you're on the Shopify Plus plan, you can also use extended authorization periods. For more information, refer to the payment authorization guide.

My account was already verified. Why am I being asked to provide new information?

Shopify and its banking partners are required to keep merchant information up to date in accordance with evolving regulations in Denmark. Even after your account has been verified, you might be contacted to provide additional or updated information. This can happen for the following reasons:

  • Regulatory requirements in Denmark have changed, and additional documentation is needed.
  • Your existing information has expired or needs to be refreshed.
  • Changes to your business structure, ownership, or address require updated verification.

To resolve this, review the request in your Shopify admin and provide the updated information or documents as prompted. Ensure that the details you provide match your current government-issued documentation.

How do I update my Shopify Payments account information?

If you are actively being asked to complete account verification, then you can make any updates to your information from in the verification page along with submitting any documents that are being requested.

Outside of the verification process, the account owner of the store can update these details through Settings > General > Business Details. Click the three dots beside your business entity and then click "edit" to update that business's information, including business type.

Note that any changes you make here are automatically sent to our banking partners for review, and the new information is re-run through their verification process. It's possible the changes automatically re-verify, but you may also be asked for supporting documents.

If you have any difficulty with this process, contact Shopify Support for assistance.

What happens if I miss my verification deadline?

You will see a temporary pause on your payouts until the verification procedure is completed. After the first deadline is hit and payouts are temporarily paused, you may see a second deadline indicating when your ability to accept orders with Shopify Payments will be temporarily paused.

All of these pauses are temporary, and will be automatically lifted once you complete verification. Reference your admin page for your deadlines.

Starting in June of 2026, brand new Shopify Payments Denmark accounts have 90 days from first order processed to complete verification. If 90 days pass, any orders you processed using Shopify Payments may be automatically refunded.

This only applies to European countries, and it only applies to brand new accounts created on or after June of 2026. If this is applicable to you, warnings will tell your account owner when they can expect the refunds to process.
