Bank account and personal information requirements for using Shopify Payments in Bulgaria

Before using Shopify Payments in Bulgaria, you need to understand the requirements that are in place to comply with regulations and to prevent financial crimes. The following sections explain why personal information is collected, the accepted types of documentation, and provide guidance for ensuring that your documentation meets the necessary criteria.

Requirements for using Shopify Payments in Bulgaria

Before you use Shopify Payments in Bulgaria, ensure that you meet the following requirements:

  • Eligible business types: Certain types of businesses and services aren't permitted to use Shopify Payments. To determine whether your business is eligible, refer to the list of prohibited business types for Bulgaria in the Shopify Payments Terms of Service (TOS).
  • Bank account requirements: Your bank account must meet the following requirements before you can connect it to Shopify Payments:
    • The bank account must be in EUR currency.
    • The bank account is eligible for Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) transfers, and can accept debits.
    • The bank account must have an International Bank Account Number (IBAN) that starts with any of the following country codes: AT, BE, BG, CH, CY, DE, DK, EE, ES, FI, FR, GB, GI, GR, HR, HU, IE, IT, LT, LU, LV, MT, NL, NO, PL, PT, RO, SE, or SI.

Unsupported bank account types

Certain bank account types aren't compatible with Shopify Payments. The following account types aren't supported:

  • Checking accounts that accept only wire transfers: These accounts don't work with Shopify Payments.
  • Savings accounts: Savings accounts can't be used for Shopify Payments payouts.
  • Flex-currency accounts: Accounts that support multiple currencies simultaneously aren't supported.
  • Money transfer services: Services that mimic bank accounts, such as some fintech platforms, can't be used with Shopify Payments.

Purpose of collecting information

Shopify and its banking partners are required to collect and verify information about you and your business to comply with regulations in Bulgaria that are designed to prevent financial crimes. As local rules and regulations evolve, you might be contacted by Shopify and its banking partners to provide additional information throughout the lifespan of your Shopify Payments account.

The information that's collected is used to confirm the identity of the business, the identities of individuals linked to the business, and the nature of the relationship between the two.

Shopify never physically mails documentation to you. Any important documents or communications are emailed, or made digitally available to the store owner in the Settings > Users page of your Shopify admin.

Review Shopify's Privacy Policy to learn about how your information is kept confidential and safe.

Required personal and business information for activating Shopify Payments in Bulgaria

The personal information that Shopify is required to collect varies from country to country. For businesses in Bulgaria, you need to correctly identify your business type because it determines the information that you need to provide.

If you haven't registered with any government agency, or you have registered but run the business as a sole trader (This includes Ednolichen Targovec (ЕТ/ET) and the self-employed), then select Individual / Sole trader.

If you have registered your business and have a Unified Identification Code (ЕИК/Булстат), select your business type based on the following guidance:

  • Partnerships with Unified Identification Codes (such as Subiratelno Drujestvo (СД), Komanditno Drujestvo (КД), or Komanditno Drujestvo s Akzii (КДА)) must select Incorporated partnership.
  • Non-profit organizations (NPOs) with Unified Identification Codes must select Incorporated non-profit.
  • All other businesses with Unified Identification Codes must select Private Corporation. Common examples are Дружество с ограничена отговорност (ООД), Еднолично дружество с ограничена отговорност (ЕООД), or Акционерно дружество (АД).

If you have a registered business, but don't have a Unified Identification Code, then select your business type based on the following guidance:

  • Partnerships without Unified Identification Codes must select Unincorporated partnership.
  • Non-profit organizations and charities who don't have Unified Identification Codes must select Unincorporated non-profit.

If you aren't sure what business type to select, then contact Shopify Support.

Individuals / Sole Traders

Individuals are single owner businesses that haven't registered with the government and are doing business privately. Sole traders are single owner businesses who are registered with the government under their personal information. Both are businesses that are owned and controlled by one individual living in Bulgaria, this includes freelancers and self-employed small business operators.

These business types are treated the same way and must provide the same information. Individuals and sole traders must provide:

  • Legal first and last name: Your full legal name as it appears on government-issued documentation.
  • Date of birth: Your birth date.
  • Email address: A valid and active email address.
  • Phone number: A valid and active phone number.
  • Residential address in Bulgaria: Your home address, matching your documentation.

If your information can't be verified automatically, then you'll receive a request to verify your identity. If any of your information such as your name, date of birth, or home address, is incorrect, then you should update your account information.

If the information is correct and you still receive a request for verification, then you can resolve the request by completing either one of the following tasks:

  • Confirm your identity by taking a selfie with a valid photo ID.
  • Upload separate proof of identity and proof of address documents in your Shopify admin.
    • The information on your documents must match what you enter on your account exactly. Update your account information to match your documents if needed.
Private Corporation (ООД, ЕООД, АД)

A private corporation is a business whose equity is divided into shares, owned by shareholders. A corporation is considered its own legal entity, separate from the people who run it. They typically also have a board of directors.

Private corporations must assign either a beneficial owner or an executive with decision-making power as their account representative. The account representative must provide the following information:

  • Legal first and last name: Your full legal name as it appears on government-issued documentation.
  • Date of birth: Your birth date.
  • Email address: A valid and active email address.
  • Phone number: A valid and active phone number.
  • Residential address: Your home address, matching your documentation.
  • Job title: The job title you hold with the business.
  • Equity: If applicable, the equity percentage you own of the business.

Private corporations also need to provide the following details about their business:

  • Registered business name: The legal business name as shown in the national BULSTAT register.
  • Unified Identification Code (ЕИК/Булстат): The business's UIC as shown in the national BULSTAT register.
  • VAT number: If applicable, your VAT registration number.
  • Business phone number: An active contact phone number for the business.
  • Business address: The official registered address of the business as shown in the national BULSTAT register.

Shopify banking partners verify your information by comparing it against government registries in Bulgaria. Pay careful attention to case, punctuation, and symbols.

If the information that you provide about the business can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. When providing this document, ensure that the registered name, unified identification code, and business address listed in your account match exactly with the information on the document, and update the information in your account to match the document if necessary. Review the list of acceptable business documents.

You must additionally list any other people who are beneficial owners of the business. Ensure you enter their names, dates of birth, and home addresses exactly as shown on their government documents. If their identities can't be verified automatically, then they might need to provide photo ID or proof of address.

The owners you provide must match against the owners listed in your government's business registry. If a mismatch is detected, you'll be asked to either complete the attestation process by clicking the "sign" button, or provide a proof of ownership document. Signing the attestation is fast and simple, but if you'd prefer to submit a document, ensure the names of the owners listed on your account matches exactly with the owners listed on your document. Update the information on your account to match your document, if necessary. If your business is owned by a holding company (either wholly or partly), sign the attestation to complete verification.

If your business has no owners you'll be asked to either sign an attestation, or provide a document confirming your directors instead. If you'd prefer to submit a document, ensure the names of the directors listed in your account matches exactly with the directors listed on your document. Update the information on your account to match your document, if necessary.

Incorporated Partnerships (СД, КД, КДА)

An incorporated partnership is a business owned by at least two partners, who have registered for commercial activity and obtained a Unified Identification Code. Incorporated partnerships have equity, and the partnership is its own entity, separate from the owners.

Unincorporated Partnerships

An unincorporated partnership is a business owned by at least two partners, who have not registered for a Unified Identification Code, but who have a partnership agreement. The owners are considered the legal entity in this case, and the business is not a separate entity.

Unincorporated partnerships need to designate an owner as the account representative of their Shopify Payments account. The account representative must provide the following information:

  • Legal first and last name: Your full legal name as it appears on government-issued documentation.
  • Date of birth: Your birth date.
  • Email address: A valid and active email address.
  • Phone number: A valid and active phone number.

Unincorporated partnerships also need to provide the following details about their business:

  • Registered business name: The legal business name as shown on documentation.
  • VAT number: If applicable, your VAT registration number.
  • Business phone number: An active contact phone number for the business.
  • Business address: The official registered address of the business as shown on documentation.

Shopify banking partners verify your information by comparing it against government registries in Bulgaria. Pay careful attention to case, punctuation, and symbols.

If the information that you provide about the business can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. When providing this document, ensure that the registered name and business address listed in your account match exactly with the information on the document, and update the information in your account to match the document if necessary.

Update the information on your account to match your document, if necessary. If your business is owned by a holding company (either wholly or partly), sign the attestation to complete verification.

Incorporated Non-Profits

A non-profit (NPO) is an entity that's established for purposes other than generating profit. Its primary mission is to serve a public or community benefit. Incorporated non-profits have obtained a Unified Identification Code.

Incorporated non-profits must assign either a director or an executive with decision-making power as their account representative.

If the information that you provide about the business can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. When providing this document, ensure that the registered name, unified identification code, and business address listed in your account match exactly with the information on the document, and update the information in your account to match the document if necessary. Review the list of acceptable business documents.

You must additionally list any other people who are on your board of directors or who are key decision makers. Ensure you enter their names, dates of birth, and home addresses exactly as shown on their government documents. If their identities can't be verified automatically, then they might need to provide photo ID or proof of address.

The directors you provide must match against the directors listed in your government's business registry. If a mismatch is detected, you'll be asked to either complete the attestation process by clicking the "sign" button, or provide a proof of directorship document. Signing the attestation is fast and simple, but if you'd prefer to submit a document, ensure the names of the directors listed on your account matches exactly with the directors listed on your document. Update the information on your account to match your document, if necessary.

Unincorporated Non-Profits

A non-profit (NPO) is an entity that's established for purposes other than generating profit. Its primary mission is to serve a public or community benefit. An unincorporated non-profit doesn't have a Unified Identification Code, but has non-profit status.

Unincorporated non-profits must assign a key decision maker or organizer as their account representative, and mark that person as an executive.

Unincorporated non-profits also need to provide the following details about their business:

Acceptable document types

To help with the verification process, you need to provide certain documents to validate your personal information and in some cases your business information. The following document types are acceptable for individuals and businesses in Bulgaria.

Identity documents

Documents must show your full name, date of birth, and photo. The name and date of birth on your Shopify Payments account must be updated to match the information shown in the identity document you're providing. The documents must be valid and must not be expired. The following documents are accepted as proof of identity:

  • паспорт (Passport)
  • лична карта (Identity card)
  • Свидетелство за управление на мпс (Driver's license)
  • Разрешение за пребиваване (Residence permit) - Photographs of the front and back are required

Address documents

Documents must show your full name and home address. The name and address on your Shopify Payments account must be updated to match the information shown in the address document you're providing. The following are the accepted address documents:

  • Сметка за комунални услуги (Utility bill) - dated within 6 months
  • Банково извлечение (Bank statement) - dated within 6 months
  • ипотечно извлечение (Mortgage statement) - dated within 6 months

Business verification documents

The document must clearly display the legal entity name, Unified Identification Code, and address of your business. The details on your Shopify Payments account must be updated to match the information displayed in the documents that you're providing. The following are the accepted business documents when using Shopify Payments in Bulgaria:

  • Извлечение от Търговския регистър и регистъра на ЮЛНЦ (Commercial register extract)
  • Регистрация по ДДС (VAT registration)

Ownership documents

The following documents are accepted as proof of ownership, provided that they display the legal entity name of your business, and all of the complete names of the owners of your business:

  • Регистър на действителните собственици (Ultimate Beneficial Owner Register)
  • Удостоверение за регистрация (Certificate of Corporate Status)
  • Документ за регистрация (Registration Document)
  • Учредителен акт (Articles of Incorporation)

Every beneficial owner listed in your documentation must also be listed in your Shopify Payments account and assigned the role of "Owner". A beneficial owner is defined as someone who owns 25% or more of the business equity. Update the information in your account to match the document if necessary.

If your business doesn't have any beneficial owners, then you need to verify your directors instead. In these cases, the same list of documents above are eligible. Each director listed in your documentation must also be listed in your Shopify Payments account and assigned the role of "Director". Update the information in your account to match the document if necessary.

If your business is owned by a holding company, please complete the digital attestation process instead by pressing the "sign" button.

Ensuring documentation compliance

When providing your documents, ensure that they meet the necessary criteria. Review the following guidelines to ensure compliance:

  • Accuracy: Ensure that the information on your documents matches what you've entered in your Shopify Payments account. Update your account to match your documents, if necessary.
  • Clarity and legibility: Make sure that your documents are clear and large enough to read. Ensure the entire document is visible in the photograph.
  • Completeness: Ensure all the necessary details are visible on your document. Review the acceptable document types listed on this page to understand what details must be included on the document.
  • Original documentation: Take an original photograph of your document using a camera. Don't photocopy, scan, or screenshot your documents. Don't paste photos of documents into other documents. Don't take photos of computer screens or printouts.
    • If your document was issued to you digitally, then provide the PDF file with all pages as it was originally given to you, with no alterations.
  • Validity: Ensure photo IDs aren't expired and that proof of address is recently issued. If providing proof of business registration, then your business should still be actively registered and in good standing.

Before contacting Shopify Support, review these common onboarding issues and their solutions.

My document was rejected

Ensure the information on your account matches your document exactly, and update your account if needed. If your documents are still being rejected, then refer to the following sections on this page:

My address can't be automatically verified

For Shopify Payments Bulgaria, if your address can't be automatically verified, then you'll be asked to either complete the selfie process, or to provide a proof of address document.

Completing the selfie process is recommended: The individual who requires verification can click the "selfie" button and then take a photograph of their photo ID, and themselves, in order to verify. This can be done instead of providing a proof of address document.

If you would prefer to provide a document manually, you can do that instead. Proof of address documents must show your full name, home address, and be one of the document types shown here. You should also ensure:

  1. Ensure the address you entered in your Shopify Payments account matches exactly with the address on your proof of address document.
  2. Update your information in your account to match your document if necessary.
  3. Upload a clear photograph of your proof of address document.
  4. Ensure the document you're uploading shows your own full name. If for example, you have a utility bill in someone else's name, you'll need to provide a different document.
My owner information can't be verified

For Shopify Payments Bulgaria, you're required to enter your owners so that the names listed match against the owners listed for your business on your government's business registry. We recommend looking up your owner information in the registry and entering the names as exactly shown there. If you have no owners, you must list all of your directors on the account instead.

If you've done so and your ownership or directorship still cannot be verified, we recommend clicking the "sign" button on your verification page to digitally attest that the information you have provided is correct. This process is fast and simple.

If you prefer, you can provide a document confirming who your owners or directors are, instead of using the attestation process. The owner and/or director information that you enter on your Shopify Payments account must match the information on the documentation that you upload. If an owner/director is listed on your documentation, but isn't added to your Shopify Payments account, then you must add that person to your account and assign them the Owner and/or Director role. A list of what types of documents you can provide to verify ownership is available here.

You should make sure the owners and directors on your account are a 1:1 match with your documentation. Don't list extra owners/directors that aren't shown on your documents.

My business information isn't being verified

Shopify banking partners verify your business information by comparing it against government registries in Bulgaria. If your business can't be verified, then check the following details:

  • Ensure that your registered business name matches exactly as it appears in the national BULSTAT register, including capitalization, punctuation, and symbols.
  • Ensure that your Unified Identification Code (ЕИК/Булстат) is correct.
  • Ensure that your business address matches the address listed in the national BULSTAT register.

If your information still can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. Ensure that the information on your document matches what you've entered in your Shopify Payments account.

My bank account information isn't working

Confirm that your account meets the bank account requirements and that you aren't using an unsupported bank account type. A Bulgarian IBAN is 22 characters long and starts with the BG prefix.

If your payout fails, then verify that you've entered your account information correctly and that you're using a supported account type. To confirm whether your account can accept SEPA transfers, contact your bank.

My payouts are failing with a virtual bank account

Virtual bank accounts such as Revolut and Payoneer are accepted for payouts, but have a higher payout failure rate than traditional bank accounts. If your payouts are failing, then consider using a standard bank account instead.

Frequently asked questions

Review these frequently asked questions about Shopify Payments requirements in Bulgaria.

I'm a company, partnership, or non-profit. Why do you need my photo ID or proof of address?

Even if you're registered as a company, partnership, or non-profit, Shopify banking partners are required by regulatory laws in Bulgaria to verify the identities of the people associated with the business, including their identities and where they're located.

I'm a citizen of Bulgaria but I don't currently live there. Can I use Shopify Payments Bulgaria?

If your business type is individual, then you're required to live in Bulgaria to be eligible for Shopify Payments Bulgaria. If you don't currently live in Bulgaria, then you should instead create a Shopify Payments account for the region you do live in.

Update your store address to your current location. If your location is eligible for Shopify Payments, then you can create a Shopify Payments account for that region instead.

If you're a type of partnership, company, or non-profit, then you're not required to personally live in Bulgaria, but your business is required to be registered there and have a Bulgarian business address. If you need help, then contact Shopify Support.

I'm a partnership and you're asking for a Unified Identification Code, but I don't have one. What should I do?

If you're a partnership being asked for a Unified Identification Code (ЕИК/Булстат), but you don't have one, then you're set up as the incorrect business type. If you're in the process of setting up the account, then go back to the business type selection screen and select Unincorporated partnership.

If you've already set up the account and are being asked for a Unified Identification Code as part of your verification process, then you can update your business type by going to Settings > General. Click the 3 dots beside your business details, and then click "edit". If you have any difficulty with updating your business type, contact Shopify Support for assistance.

I'm a sole trader. Do you need my business registration or information?

For the purposes of business and identity verification in Bulgaria, Shopify is only required to collect and verify the personal information of the owner if you're a sole trader.

If you're a sole trader, then don't attempt to sign up as a different business type. You might have difficulty passing verification.

I'm a publicly traded company. Which business type should I pick?

You should pick private corporation. For the purposes of business verification, the process for public and privately owned companies is identical. You can skip past the section of the account setup form that requests that you add owners. You're not required to list any beneficial owners, if you have none.

If you're a publicly traded company in Bulgaria, you've already set up the Shopify Payments account, and now you are being asked for ownership information as part of your verification process, update your ownership details to reflect that you have no owners. Remove the "owner" role from any people on file, and instead ensure all your directors are listed on the account and have the "director" role assigned.

You might be asked to confirm that the listed directorship is correct. If you can confirm it looks correct, click the "sign" button to digitally attest to the information on file.

If you have any difficulty with this process, contact Shopify Support for assistance.

I don't have a Unified Identification Code, but I'm not an individual or sole trader

If you don't have a Unified Identification Code, then Shopify only has business type options available for unincorporated partnerships and unincorporated non-profits. Both of these business types still need to provide the applicable business documentation that shows they're otherwise registered as the business entity in Bulgaria.

If neither of these business types fits your business, then select Individual / Sole Trader and assign a key decision maker or owner as the account representative.

My account was already verified. Why am I being asked to provide new information?

Regulatory and financial partner requirements change over time. When this happens, you might need to provide additional information to remain compliant. You'll receive these requests through a banner or alert in your admin and a corresponding email. You must complete these requests to continue using Shopify Payments.

How do I update my Shopify Payments account information?

If you're actively being asked to complete account verification, then you can make any updates to your information from the verification page along with submitting any documents that are being requested.

Outside of the verification process, the account owner of the store can update these details through Settings > General > Business Details. Click the three dots beside your business entity and then click "edit" to update that business's information, including business type.

Note that any changes you make here are automatically sent to our banking partners for review, and the new information is re-run through their verification process. It's possible the changes automatically re-verify, but you may also be asked for supporting documents.

What happens if I miss my verification deadline?

You will see a temporary pause on your payouts until the verification procedure is completed. After the first deadline is hit and payouts are temporarily paused, you may see a second deadline indicating when your ability to accept orders with Shopify Payments will be temporarily paused.

All of these pauses are temporary, and will be automatically lifted once you complete verification. Reference your admin page for your deadlines.

Starting in June of 2026, brand new Shopify Payments Bulgaria accounts have 90 days from first order processed to complete verification. If 90 days pass, any orders you processed using Shopify Payments might be automatically refunded.

This only applies to European countries, and it only applies to brand new accounts created on or after June of 2026. If this is applicable to you, warnings will tell your account owner when they can expect the refunds to process.
