Requirements for using Shopify Payments in Belgium
Before you use Shopify Payments in Belgium, ensure that you meet the following requirements:
- Eligible business types: Certain types of businesses and services aren't permitted to use Shopify Payments. To determine whether your business is eligible, refer to the list of prohibited business types for Belgium in the Shopify Payments Terms of Service (TOS).
- Bank account requirements: Your bank account must meet the following requirements before you can connect it to Shopify Payments:
- The bank account must be in EUR currency.
- The bank account is eligible for Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) transfers.
- The bank account must have an International Bank Account Number (IBAN) that starts with any of the following country codes: AT, BE, BG, CH, CY, DE, DK, EE, ES, FI, FR, GB, GI, GR, HR, HU, IE, IT, LT, LU, LV, MT, NL, NO, PL, PT, RO, SE, or SI.
- Enter your full IBAN with no spaces. A Belgian IBAN is 16 characters; length varies by country (see iban.com). You can validate your IBAN format using an online IBAN validator before entering it.
Unsupported bank account types
Certain bank account types aren't compatible with Shopify Payments. The following account types aren't supported:
- Checking accounts that accept only wire transfers: These accounts don't work with Shopify Payments.
- Savings accounts: Savings accounts can't be used for Shopify Payments payouts.
- Flex-currency accounts: Accounts that support multiple currencies simultaneously aren't supported.
- Money transfer services: Services that mimic bank accounts, such as some fintech platforms, can't be used with Shopify Payments.
Although non-Shopify virtual accounts are supported, you can experience more payout failures with these accounts.
To confirm whether your account can accept the transfer type listed for your region, contact your bank.
Purpose of collecting information
Shopify and its banking partners are required to collect and verify information about you and your business to comply with regulations in Belgium that are designed to prevent financial crimes. As local rules and regulations evolve, you might be contacted by Shopify and its banking partners to provide additional information throughout the lifespan of your Shopify Payments account.
The information that's collected is used to confirm the identity of the business, the identities of individuals linked to the business, and the nature of the relationship between the two.
Shopify never physically mails documentation to you. Any important documents or communications are emailed, or made digitally available to the store owner in the Settings > Users page of your Shopify admin.
Review Shopify's Privacy Policy to learn about how your information is kept confidential and safe.
Required personal and business information for activating Shopify Payments in Belgium
The personal information that Shopify is required to collect varies from country to country. For businesses in Belgium, you need to correctly identify your business type because it determines the information that you need to provide.
If you haven't registered with any government agency, or you have registered but run the business as a sole proprietorship (including eenmanszaak, entreprise individuelle, freelancers, and the self-employed), then select Individual / Sole Proprietorship.
If you have registered your business and have a Crossroads Bank for Enterprises number (CBE/KBO), then select your business type based on the following guidance:
- Partnerships with CBE/KBO numbers (SCV, SC) must select Incorporated partnership.
- Non-profit organizations with CBE/KBO numbers must select Incorporated non-profit.
- All other businesses with Crossroads Bank for Enterprises numbers must select Private Corporation. Common examples are BV and SRL.
If you have a registered business, but don't have a CBE/KBO number, then select your business type based on the following guidance:
- Partnerships without CBE/KBO numbers (VOF, SNC, CommV or SComm) must select Unincorporated partnership.
- Non-profit organizations and charities who don't have CBE/KBO numbers must select Unincorporated non-profit.
If you aren't sure what business type to select, then contact Shopify Support for help with selecting the right one.
Individuals / Sole Proprietorships
Individuals are single owner businesses that haven't registered with the government and are doing business privately. Sole proprietorships are single owner businesses who are registered with the government under their personal information. Both are businesses that are owned and controlled by one individual living in Belgium, this includes freelancers and self-employed small business operators.
These business types are treated the same way and must provide the same information. Individuals and sole proprietorships need to provide:
- Legal first and last name: Your full legal name as it appears on government-issued documentation.
- Date of birth: Your birth date.
- Email address: A valid and active email address.
- Phone number: A valid and active phone number.
- Residential address in Belgium: Your home address, matching your documentation.
If your information can't be verified automatically, then you'll receive a request to verify your identity. If any of your information such as your name, date of birth, or home address, is incorrect, then you should update your account information.
If the information is correct and you still receive a request for verification, then you can resolve the request by completing either one of the following tasks:
- Confirm your identity by taking a selfie with a valid photo ID.
- Upload separate proof of identity and proof of address documents in your Shopify admin.
- The information on your documents must match what you enter on your account exactly. Update your account information to match your documents if needed.
Private Corporations (BV, SRL)
A private corporation is a business whose equity is divided into shares, owned by shareholders. A corporation is considered its own legal entity, separate from the people who run it. They typically also have a board of directors.
Private corporations must assign either a beneficial owner or an executive with decision-making power as their account representative. The account representative must provide the following information:
- Legal first and last name: Your full legal name as it appears on government-issued documentation.
- Date of birth: Your birth date.
- Email address: A valid and active email address.
- Phone number: A valid and active phone number.
- Residential address: Your home address, matching your documentation.
- Job title: The job title you hold with the business.
- Equity: If applicable, the equity percentage you own of the business.
Private corporations also need to provide the following details about their business:
- Registered business name: The legal business name as shown in government business registries.
- Crossroads Bank for Enterprises number (CBE/KBO): The business's CBE/KBO as shown in government business registries.
- VAT number: If applicable, your VAT registration number.
- Business phone number: An active contact phone number for the business.
- Business address: The official registered address of the business as shown in government business registries.
Shopify banking partners verify your information by comparing it against government registries in Belgium. Pay careful attention to case, punctuation, and symbols.
If the information that you provide about the business can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. When providing this document, ensure that the registered name, CBE/KBO number, and business address listed in your account match exactly with the information on the document, and update the information in your account to match the document if necessary. Review the list of acceptable business documents.
You must additionally list any other people who are beneficial owners of the business. Ensure you enter their names, dates of birth, and home addresses exactly as shown on their government documents. If their identities can't be verified automatically, then they might need to provide photo ID or proof of address.
The owners you provide must match against the owners listed in your government's business registry. If a mismatch is detected, you'll be asked to either complete the attestation process by clicking the "sign" button, or provide a proof of ownership document. Signing the attestation is fast and simple, but if you'd prefer to submit a document, ensure the names of the owners listed on your account matches exactly with the owners listed on your document. Update the information on your account to match your document, if necessary. If your business is owned by a holding company (either wholly or partly), sign the attestation to complete verification.
Incorporated Partnerships (CV, SC)

Update the information on your account to match your document, if necessary. If your business is owned by a holding company (either wholly or partly), sign the attestation to complete verification.
Unincorporated Partnerships (VOF, SNC, CommV or SComm)
An unincorporated partnership is a business owned by at least two partners, who have not registered for a Crossroads Bank for Enterprises number, but who have a partnership agreement. The owners are considered the legal entity in this case, and the business is not a separate entity.
Unincorporated partnerships need to designate an owner as the account representative of their Shopify Payments account. The account representative must provide the following information:

Shopify banking partners verify your information by comparing it against government registries in Belgium. Pay careful attention to case, punctuation, and symbols.
If the information that you provide about the business can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. When providing this document, ensure that the registered name and business address listed in your account match exactly with the information on the document, and update the information in your account to match the document if necessary.
Incorporated Non-Profits

Acceptable document types
To help with the verification process, you need to provide certain documents to validate your personal information and in some cases your business information. The following document types are acceptable for individuals and businesses in Belgium.
Identity documents
Documents must show your full name, date of birth, and photo. The name and date of birth on your Shopify Payments account must be updated to match the information shown in the identity document you're providing. The documents must be valid and must not be expired. The following documents are accepted as proof of identity:
- Passport
- Driver's license - Photographs of front and back are required.
- Identity card - Photographs of front and back are required.
- Residence permit - Photographs of front and back are required.

Ownership documents
The following documents are accepted as proof of ownership, provided that they display the legal entity name of your business, and all of the complete names of the owners of your business.
- Registre UBO / UBO Register (Ultimate Beneficial Owner Register)
- Kruispuntbank van Ondernemingen (KBO) uittreksel (Certificate of Corporate Status)
- Jaarlijkse gegevens (Annual Returns)
- Jaarverslag (Annual Reports)
Every beneficial owner listed in your documentation must also be listed in your Shopify Payments account and assigned the role of "Owner". A beneficial owner is defined as someone who owns 25% or more of the business equity. Update the information in your account to match the document if necessary.
If your business does not have any beneficial owners, you will be required to verify your directors instead. In these cases, the same list of documents above are eligible. Each director listed in your documentation must also be listed in your Shopify Payments account and assigned the role of "Director". Update the information in your account to match the document if necessary.
If your business is owned by a holding company, please complete the digital attestation process instead by pressing the "sign" button.
Ensuring documentation compliance
When providing your documents, ensure that they meet the necessary criteria. Review the following guidelines to ensure compliance:
- Accuracy: Ensure that the information on your documents matches what you've entered in your Shopify Payments account. Update your account to match your documents, if necessary.
- Clarity and legibility: Make sure that your documents are clear and large enough to read. Ensure the entire document is visible in the photograph.
- Completeness: Ensure all the necessary details are visible on your document. Review the acceptable document types listed on this page to understand what details must be included on the document.
- Original documentation: Take an original photograph of your document using a camera. Don't photocopy, scan, or screenshot your documents. Don't paste photos of documents into other documents. Don't take photos of computer screens or printouts.
- If your document was issued to you digitally, then provide the PDF file with all pages as it was originally given to you, with no alterations.
- Validity: Ensure photo IDs aren't expired and that proof of address is recently issued. If providing proof of business registration, then your business should still be actively registered and in good standing.
Troubleshooting common issues
Before contacting Shopify Support, review these common onboarding issues and their solutions.
My document was rejected
Make sure the information on your account matches the information in the document you're submitting, and update your account to match your documentation if needed. If your documents are still being rejected, then refer to the following sections on this page:
- Acceptable document types: Which documents are accepted and what details they must include. Screenshots, printouts of online searches, and registry screenshots are not accepted.
- Ensuring documentation compliance: Requirements for accuracy, clarity, completeness, original documentation, and validity.
My bank account information isn't working
Make sure your account meets the requirements and that you're using a supported account type. If your payout fails, then verify that you've entered your account information in the correct format. Refer to the following sections on this page:
- Requirements for using Shopify Payments in Belgium: Bank account requirements, including EUR currency, SEPA eligibility, IBAN format, and how to validate your IBAN.
- Unsupported bank account types: Account types that can't be used for payouts, including savings, wire-transfer-only, flex-currency, and virtual account limitations.
My payouts are on hold after updating my bank account
Learn about payout timing when updating your bank account.
My business information isn't being verified
When entering your business information, ensure that your business name, Crossroads Bank for Enterprises number (CBE/KBO), and address match exactly as they appear in government business registries in Belgium. This includes:
- Correct letter case (uppercase and lowercase)
- Correct punctuation and spacing
- Complete business name as registered
Shopify banking partners verify your information automatically by comparing it against official registries. Even small differences can cause verification to fail. Ensure the documentation you're submitting includes the legal name, CBE/KBO number, and business address, and that these details match what's in your account. Update your account to match your document, if necessary.
My address can't be automatically verified
For Shopify Payments Belgium, if your address can't be automatically verified, then you'll be asked to either complete the selfie process, or to provide a proof of address document.
Completing the selfie process is recommended: The individual who requires verification can click the "selfie" button and then take a photograph of their photo ID, and themselves, in order to verify. This can be done instead of providing a proof of address document.
If you would prefer to provide a document manually, you can do that instead. Proof of address documents must show your full name, home address, and be one of the document types shown here. You should also ensure:
- Ensure the address you entered in your Shopify Payments account matches exactly with the address on your proof of address document.
- Update your information in your account to match your document if necessary.
- Upload a clear photograph of your proof of address document.
- Ensure the document you're uploading shows your own full name. If for example, you have a utility bill in someone else's name, you'll need to provide a different document.
My owner information can't be verified.
For Shopify Payments Belgium, you're required to enter your owners so that the names listed match against the owners listed for your business on your government's business registry. We recommend looking up your owner information in the registry and entering the names as exactly shown there. If you have no owners, you must list all of your directors on the account instead.
If you have done so and your ownership or directorship still cannot be verified, we recommend clicking the "sign" button on your verification page to digitally attest that the information you have provided is correct. This process is fast and simple.
If you would prefer you can provide a document confirming who your owners or directors are, instead of using the attestation process. The owner and/or director information that you enter on your Shopify Payments account must match the information on the documentation that you upload. If an owner/director is listed on your documentation, but isn't added to your Shopify Payments account, then you must add that person to your account and assign them the Owner and/or Director role. A list of what types of documents you can provide to verify ownership is available here.
You should make sure the owners and directors on your account are a 1:1 match with your documentation. Do not list extra owners/directors that are not shown on your documents.
Frequently asked questions
Review these frequently asked questions about Shopify Payments requirements in Belgium.
Why do you need my photo ID and proof of address if I'm a company, partnership, or non-profit?
Even if you're set up as a company, partnership, or non-profit, Shopify's banking partners are required by regulations in Belgium to verify the identities of the people associated with the business, including who they are and where they're located.
I'm a citizen of Belgium and was born there, but I don't currently live in Belgium. Can I use Shopify Payments in Belgium?
If your business type is Individual / Sole Proprietorship, then you're required to live in Belgium to be eligible for Shopify Payments in Belgium. If you don't currently live in Belgium, then you should create a Shopify Payments account for the region where you do live.
Update your store address to your current location. If your location is eligible for Shopify Payments, then you can create a Shopify Payments account for that region instead.
If you're a partnership, company, or non-profit, then you're not required to personally live in Belgium, but your business must be registered in Belgium and have a Belgian business address. If you need help, then contact Shopify Support.
I'm a partnership in Belgium. You're asking for a Crossroads Bank for Enterprises number (CBE/KBO), but I don't have one.
If you're a partnership in Belgium being asked for a CBE/KBO number but you don't have one, then you're set up as the incorrect business type. If you're in the process of setting up the account, then go back to the business type selection screen and select Unincorporated partnership.
If you've already set up the account and are being asked for a CBE/KBO number as part of your verification process, then update your business type through Settings > General > Business Details. Click the three dots beside your business entity and then click "edit" to update that business's information, including business type. Contact Shopify Support if you're having difficulty.
I'm a sole proprietor in Belgium. Don't you want my business registration or information?
For the purposes of business and identity verification in Belgium, only the personal information of the owner is required if you're a sole trader or sole proprietor.
If you're a sole proprietorship, then don't attempt to sign up as a different business type. You might have difficulty passing verification.
I'm a publicly traded company in Belgium. Which business type should I pick?
You should pick Private Corporation (BV, SRL). For the purposes of business verification, the process for public and privately owned companies is identical. You can skip past the section of the account setup form that requests that you add owners. You are not required to list any beneficial owners, if you have none.
If you're a publicly traded company in Belgium, you've already set up the Shopify Payments account, and now you are being asked for ownership information as part of your verification process, update your ownership details to reflect that you have no owners. Remove the "owner" role from any people on file, and instead ensure all your directors are listed on the account and have the "director" role assigned.
You may be asked to confirm that the listed directorship is correct. If you can confirm it looks correct, click the "sign" button to digitally attest to the information on file.
If you have any difficulty with this process, contact Shopify Support for assistance.
I don't have a Crossroads Bank for Enterprises number (CBE/KBO), but I'm not an individual or sole proprietorship. I'm a different kind of business.
If you don't have a CBE/KBO number, then Shopify has business type options available for Unincorporated partnership and Unincorporated non-profit. Both of these business types still need to provide the applicable business documentation showing that they're otherwise registered as that business entity in Belgium.
If neither of these business types fits your business, then you should select Individual / Sole Proprietorship and assign a key decision maker or owner as the account representative.
How do I update my Shopify Payments account information?
If you are actively being asked to complete account verification, then you can make any updates to your information from in the verification page along with submitting any documents that are being requested.
Outside of the verification process, the account owner of the store can update these details through Settings > General > Business Details. Click the three dots beside your business entity and then click "edit" to update that business's information, including business type.
Note that any changes you make here are automatically sent to our banking partners for review, and the new information is re-run through their verification process. It's possible the changes automatically re-verify, but you may also be asked for supporting documents.

What happens if I miss my verification deadline?
You will see a temporary pause on your payouts until the verification procedure is completed. After the first deadline is hit and payouts are temporarily paused, you may see a second deadline indicating when your ability to accept orders with Shopify Payments will be temporarily paused.
All of these pauses are temporary, and will be automatically lifted once you complete verification. Reference your admin page for your deadlines.
Starting in June of 2026, brand new Shopify Payments Belgium accounts have 90 days from first order processed to complete verification. If 90 days pass, any orders you processed using Shopify Payments may be automatically refunded.
This only applies to European countries, and it only applies to brand new accounts created on or after June of 2026. If this is applicable to you, warnings will tell your account owner when they can expect the refunds to process.
