Review Shopify's Privacy Policy to learn about how your information is kept confidential and safe.
Required personal and business information for activating Shopify Payments in Austria
It's important that you correctly identify your business type because it determines the information that you need to provide.
If you haven't registered with any government agency, or you have registered but run the business as an Einzelunternehmen (including EPU, sole trader, self-employed), then select the Individual / Sole proprietor business type.
If you have registered your business and have a firmenbuchnummer, then select your business type based on the following guidance:
- Partnerships with firmenbuchnummers (OG, KG, GmbH & Co KG) must select the registered partnership business type.
- Non-profit organizations with firmenbuchnummers (Verein, Stiftung, Privatstiftung) must select the incorporated non-profit business type.
- All other businesses with firmenbuchnummers must select the private corporation business type. Common examples are GmbHs or FlexCos.
If you have a registered business, but don't have a firmenbuchnummer, then select your business type based on the following guidance:
- Partnerships without firmenbuchnummers (GesbR, StGes) must select the unregistered partnership business type.
- Non-profit organizations and charities that don't have firmenbuchnummers must select the unincorporated non-profit business type.
If you're not sure what business type to pick, then contact Shopify Support for help with selecting the right one.
Individuals / Sole proprietors
Individuals are single owner businesses that haven't registered with the government and are doing business privately. Sole proprietors are single owner businesses who are registered with the government under their personal information. Both are businesses that are owned and controlled by one individual living in Austria. This includes freelancers and self-employed small business operators.
These business types are treated the same way and must provide the same information. Individuals and sole proprietors must provide:
- Legal first and last name: Your full legal name as it appears on government-issued documentation.
- Date of birth: Your birth date.
- Email address: A valid and active email address.
- Phone number: A valid and active phone number.
- Residential address in Austria: Your home address, matching your documentation.
If your information can't be verified automatically, then you'll receive a request to verify your identity. If any of your information such as your name, date of birth, or home address, is incorrect, then you should update your account information.
If the information is correct and you still receive a request for verification, then you can resolve the request by completing either one of the following tasks:
- Confirm your identity by taking a selfie with a valid photo ID.
- Upload separate proof of identity and proof of address documents in your Shopify admin.
- The information on your documents must match what you enter on your account exactly. Update your account information to match your documents if needed.
Private corporation (GmbH, FlexCo)
A private corporation is a business whose equity is divided into shares, owned by shareholders. A corporation is considered its own legal entity, separate from the people who run it. They typically also have a board of directors.
Private corporations must assign either a beneficial owner or an executive with decision-making power as their account representative. The account representative must provide the following information:
- Legal first and last name: Your full legal name as it appears on government-issued documentation.
- Date of birth: Your birth date.
- Email address: A valid and active email address.
- Phone number: A valid and active phone number.
- Residential address: Your home address, matching your documentation.
- Job title: The job title you hold with the business.
- Equity: If applicable, the equity percentage you own of the business.

- Business address: The official registered address of the business as shown in the commercial court register.
Shopify banking partners verify your information by comparing it against government registries in Austria. Pay careful attention to case, punctuation, and symbols.
If the information that you provide about the business can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. When providing this document, ensure that the registered name, firmenbuchnummer, and business address listed in your account match exactly with the information on the document, and update the information in your account to match the document if necessary. Review the list of acceptable business documents.
You must additionally list any other people who are beneficial owners of the business. Ensure you enter their names, dates of birth, and home addresses exactly as shown on their government documents. If their identities can't be verified automatically, then they might need to provide photo ID or proof of address.
The owners you provide must match against the owners listed in your government's business registry. If a mismatch is detected, you'll be asked to either complete the attestation process by clicking the "sign" button, or provide a proof of ownership document. Signing the attestation is fast and simple, but if you'd prefer to submit a document, ensure the names of the owners listed on your account matches exactly with the owners listed on your document. Update the information on your account to match your document, if necessary. If your business is owned by a holding company (either wholly or partly), sign the attestation to complete verification.
If your business has no owners you'll be asked to either sign an attestation, or provide a document confirming your directors instead. If you'd prefer to submit a document, ensure the names of the directors listed in your account matches exactly with the directors listed on your document. Update the information on your account to match your document, if necessary.

Unregistered partnerships (GesbR, StGes)
An unregistered partnership is a business owned by at least two partners, who have not registered for a firmenbuchnummer, but who have a partnership agreement. The owners are considered the legal entity in this case, and the business is not a separate entity. A common form of unincorporated partnership is GesbR (Gesellschaft bürgerlichen Rechts).

If the information you provide about the business can't be verified, then you might need to provide a business verification document. When providing this document, ensure that the registered name and business address listed in your account matches exactly with the information on the document, and update the information in your account to match the document if necessary. Review the list of acceptable business documents.
You must additionally list any other people who are beneficial owners of the business. Ensure you enter their names, dates of birth, and home addresses exactly as shown on their government documents. Update the information in your account to match the document if necessary.
If your business is owned by a holding company, please complete the digital attestation process instead by pressing the "sign" button.
Ensuring documentation compliance
When providing your documents, ensure that they meet the necessary criteria. Review the following guidelines to ensure compliance:
- Accuracy: Ensure that the information on your documents matches what you've entered in your Shopify Payments account. Update your account to match your documents, if necessary.
- Clarity and legibility: Make sure that your documents are clear and large enough to read. Ensure the entire document is visible in the photograph.
- Completeness: Ensure all the necessary details are visible on your document. Review the acceptable document types listed on this page to understand what details must be included on the document.
- Original documentation: Take an original photograph of your document using a camera. Don't photocopy, scan, or screenshot your documents. Don't paste photos of documents into other documents. Don't take photos of computer screens or printouts.
- If your document was issued to you digitally, then provide the PDF file with all pages as it was originally given to you, with no alterations.
- Validity: Ensure photo IDs aren't expired and that proof of address is recently issued. If providing proof of business registration, then your business should still be actively registered and in good standing.
Troubleshooting common issues
Before contacting Shopify Support, review the following common onboarding issues and their solutions.
I'm a partnership in Austria being asked for a firmenbuchnummer, but I don't have one.
If you're a partnership in Austria being asked for a firmenbuchnummer, but you don't have one, then you're set up as the incorrect business type. If you're in the process of setting up your Shopify Payments account, then update the business type to unregistered partnership.
If you've already set up the account and are being asked for a firmenbuchnummer as part of your verification process, then you can update your business type by going to Settings > General. Click the 3 dots beside your business details, and then click "edit". If you have any difficulty with updating your business type, contact Shopify Support for assistance.
I don't have a firmenbuchnummer, and I'm not an individual or sole proprietor.
If you don't have a firmenbuchnummer, and you are not an individual or sole proprietorship, then you can only select unregistered partnership or unincorporated non-profit as your business type. You must still provide documentation showing that your business is registered in Austria.
If neither of these business types fits your business, then you should select Individual / Sole Proprietorship and assign a key decision maker or owner as the account representative.
My document was rejected.
Make sure the information on your account matches the information in the document you're submitting, and update your account to match your documentation if needed. If your documents are still being rejected, then refer to the following sections on this page:
- Acceptable document types: Which documents are accepted and what details they must include. Screenshots, printouts of online searches, and registry screenshots are not accepted.
- Ensuring documentation compliance: Requirements for accuracy, clarity, completeness, original documentation, and validity.
My business information isn't being verified.
When entering your business information, ensure that your business name, firmenbuchnummer, and business address match exactly as they appear in the commercial court register. This includes:
- Correct letter case (uppercase and lowercase)
- Correct punctuation and spacing
- Complete business name as registered
Our banking partners verify your information automatically by comparing it against official registries. Even small differences can cause verification to fail. Ensure the documentation you're submitting shows legal name, firmenbuchnummer, and business address, and that these details match what is shown on your account. Update your account to match your document, if necessary.
My address can't be automatically verified.
If your address can't be automatically verified, then you'll be asked to either complete the selfie process, or to provide a proof of address document.
Completing the selfie process is recommended: The individual who requires verification can click the "selfie" button and then take a photograph of their photo ID, and themselves, in order to verify. This can be done instead of providing a proof of address document.
If you would prefer to provide a document manually, you can do that instead. Proof of address documents must show your full name, home address, and be one of the document types shown here. You should also ensure:
- Ensure the address you entered in your Shopify Payments account matches exactly with the address on your proof of address document.
- Update your information in your account to match your document if necessary.
- Upload a clear photograph of your proof of address document.
- Ensure the document you're uploading shows your own full name. If for example, you have a utility bill in someone else's name, you'll need to provide a different document.
My owner information can't be verified.
You're required to enter your owners on your Shopify Payments account, so that the names listed match against the owners listed for your business on your government's business registry. We recommend looking up your owner information in the registry and entering the names as exactly shown there. If you have no owners, you must list all of your directors on the account instead.
If you have done so and your ownership or directorship still cannot be verified, we recommend clicking the "sign" button on your verification page to digitally attest that the information you have provided is correct. This process is fast and simple.
If you would prefer you can provide a document confirming who your owners or directors are, instead of using the attestation process. The owner and/or director information that you enter on your Shopify Payments account must match the information on the documentation that you upload. If an owner/director is listed on your documentation, but isn't added to your Shopify Payments account, then you must add that person to your account and assign them the Owner and/or Director role. A list of what types of documents you can provide to verify ownership is available here.
You should make sure the owners and directors on your account are a 1:1 match with your documentation. Do not list extra owners/directors that are not shown on your documents.
Frequently asked questions
Review the following frequently asked questions about Shopify Payments requirements in Austria.
Why do you need my Photo ID and/or Proof of Address if I'm a company/partnership/non profit?
Even if you're entered as a company, partnership, or non profit, our banking partners are required by regulatory laws in Austria to verify the identities of the people associated with the business, including their identities and where they're located.
I'm a citizen of Austria but don't currently live there. Can I use Shopify Payments Austria?
If your business type is individual, then you're required to live in Austria to be eligible for Shopify Payments Austria. If you don't currently live in Austria, then you should instead create a Shopify Payments account for the region you do live in.
Update your store address to your current location. If your location is eligible for Shopify Payments, you can then create a Shopify Payments account for that region instead.
If you're a type of partnership, company, or nonprofit, then you're not required to personally live in Austria, but your business is required to be registered there and have an Austrian business address.
I'm a Sole Proprietor/Sole Trader. Don't you want my business registration or information?
For the purposes of business and identity verification in Austria, only the personal information of the owner is required if you're a sole proprietor.
If you're a sole proprietor, then don't attempt to sign up as a different business type. You might have difficulty passing verification.
I'm a publicly traded company in Austria. Which business type should I pick?
You should pick private corporation. For the purposes of business verification, the process for public and privately owned companies is identical. You can skip past the section of the account setup form that requests that you add owners. You are not required to list any beneficial owners, if you have none.
If you're a publicly traded company in Austria, you've already set up the Shopify Payments account, and now you are being asked for ownership information as part of your verification process, update your ownership details to reflect that you have no owners. Remove the "owner" role from any people on file, and instead ensure all your directors are listed on the account and have the "director" role assigned.
You may be asked to confirm that the listed directorship is correct. If you can confirm it looks correct, click the "sign" button to digitally attest to the information on file.
If you have any difficulty with this process, contact Shopify Support for assistance.
How do I update my Shopify Payments account information?
If you are actively being asked to complete account verification, then you can make any updates to your information from in the verification page along with submitting any documents that are being requested.
Outside of the verification process, the account owner of the store can update these details through Settings > General > Business Details. Click the three dots beside your business entity and then click "edit" to update that business's information, including business type.
Note that any changes you make here are automatically sent to our banking partners for review, and the new information is re-run through their verification process. It's possible the changes automatically re-verify, but you may also be asked for supporting documents.
If you have any difficulty with this process, contact Shopify Support for assistance.
What happens if I miss my verification deadline?
You will see a temporary pause on your payouts until the verification procedure is completed. After the first deadline is hit and payouts are temporarily paused, you may see a second deadline indicating when your ability to accept orders with Shopify Payments will be temporarily paused.
All of these pauses are temporary, and will be automatically lifted once you complete verification. Reference your admin page for your deadlines.
Starting in June of 2026, brand new Shopify Payments Austria accounts have 90 days from first order processed to complete verification. If 90 days pass, any orders you processed using Shopify Payments may be automatically refunded.
This only applies to European countries, and it only applies to brand new accounts created on or after June of 2026. If this is applicable to you, warnings will tell your account owner when they can expect the refunds to process.
