OXXO

OXXO is a cash voucher payment method for Shopify Payments in Mexico. A customer places their order online, and then completes the payment in cash at an OXXO store using a barcode or reference number.

OXXO payments aren't confirmed immediately. After a customer places an order using OXXO, the order is created with a Payment pending status until the customer pays in store and the payment is confirmed.

Requirements for using OXXO

To activate OXXO for your online store, your store and customers must meet the following requirements:

  • Your store must be located in Mexico and use a Shopify Payments Mexico account.
  • You must complete identity verification.
  • Your store's business category must be eligible for OXXO. Some business categories aren't supported, so OXXO might not be available to activate even when your store meets every other requirement.
  • Your customers must be located in Mexico.
  • Your customers must pay in Mexican pesos (MXN). Ensure that your store accepts MXN. To sell to Mexico, you can configure this in your multi-currency settings with international sales tools.
  • The amount paid with OXXO must be from 10 MXN up to 10,000 MXN. When the customer applies a gift card or store credit to the order, this limit applies to the remaining amount that they pay with OXXO, not to the order total.
  • OXXO is available in standard Shopify Payments checkout and Shop Pay checkout on desktop, mobile web, and in the Shop app. OXXO isn't available for Shop Pay Installments, Shopify POS, in-person payments, or subscriptions.

Accepting payments with OXXO

With OXXO, the order is placed when the customer completes checkout, but the payment isn't complete until the customer pays in cash at an OXXO store and the payment is confirmed. During this period, the payment status in the Shopify admin is displayed as Payment pending.

The payment status switches to Paid after the customer pays in store and the payment is confirmed. Payment confirmation can take up to 3 business days after the customer pays at an OXXO store. Wait until the payment is confirmed before you fulfill the order.

The OXXO barcode is valid for 5 days after the order is placed. When the barcode expires, the payment doesn't fail immediately. The order stays Payment pending for up to 3 business days after the barcode expires, so that a payment made close to the expiry time can still be confirmed. These 3 business days follow the Mexican calendar, so weekends and public holidays in Mexico aren't counted.

When OXXO is the only payment on the order, and no payment is confirmed, then the order is canceled automatically and the inventory on it is released. This happens at the end of the 3 business days, or sooner when the payment fails before then.

When the customer pays part of the order another way, such as with a gift card, the order isn't canceled automatically when the OXXO payment fails. The order stays open with the other payment applied and its inventory reserved, so review these orders and cancel or refund them yourself.

You can't safely cancel an OXXO order while the payment is still pending, even after the barcode expires. After expiry, payment confirmation might still arrive if the customer paid before the cutoff. Wait until the order is marked as Paid, or until the order is canceled automatically within 3 business days of the barcode expiring. An order that the customer paid part of another way isn't canceled automatically, so cancel or refund that order yourself after the OXXO payment fails. Inventory is held on the pending order until the payment is confirmed or the order is canceled.

When a customer pays for an order using OXXO, a chargeback can't be filed for that order. After the payment is confirmed, funds are included in your regular Shopify Payments payout.

Refunds with OXXO

Customers pay for an OXXO order in cash at an OXXO store, so there's no card or bank account on file for automatic refunds. OXXO payments can't be refunded to the original payment method through Shopify Payments.

To refund an OXXO order, use one of the following methods:

  • Store credit or gift card: When store credit is available, you can issue the refund as store credit in your Shopify admin. Store credit is recorded automatically. When you issue a gift card for the refund amount, you can record the refund in your Shopify admin after you issue the gift card.
  • Refund outside Shopify: Send the funds to the customer yourself using a SPEI bank transfer. Ask the customer for their CLABE, which is their 18-digit Mexican bank account number.

When you record a manual refund for an OXXO order in Shopify, no money changes hands. Recording applies to gift card refunds and to refunds that you send outside Shopify, and marks the order as refunded after you've already refunded the customer. Store credit refunds are recorded for you. After you complete a gift card refund or a refund outside Shopify, mark the order as refunded in your Shopify admin. Recording the refund keeps your order records accurate and helps you track which OXXO orders were refunded, for how much, and by which method.

Customer experience

When a customer visits your online store and makes a purchase in Mexico, an OXXO payment option is displayed during the checkout process.

To pay with OXXO, customers select it during checkout. After the order is placed, the customer receives a barcode, reference number, and expiry date and time on the order confirmation page. When the customer enters an email address as their contact information at checkout, they also receive the OXXO barcode by email. The OXXO barcode is sent separately from the order confirmation email.

When the customer enters a phone number as their contact information at checkout, they receive a text message with a link to the order confirmation page, where they can access the barcode. Customers using a supported Apple device can save the barcode to Apple Wallet.

The customer takes the barcode to an OXXO store in Mexico and pays in cash. OXXO charges the customer a small store fee, which is disclosed at checkout.

When the customer doesn't pay before the barcode expires, the payment fails. An order paid entirely with OXXO is canceled automatically within 3 business days after the barcode expires. An order that the customer paid part of another way, such as with a gift card, stays open for you to cancel or refund. Customers who entered an email address at checkout receive a reminder email 1 day before the barcode expires, and an expiry email after it expires. Because payment confirmation can take up to 3 business days, they might receive an expiry email even when they paid close to the expiry date. Customers who entered a phone number instead of an email address don't receive these emails.
