Alipay
Alipay is a wallet and app-based local payment method. Eligible merchants can use Alipay to accept payments from customers who use Alipay, wherever those customers are located. Alipay is available through Shopify Payments, so you don't need to set up a third-party payment gateway to offer Alipay.
Customers can use Alipay for one-time payments at online checkout. Depending on your store's eligibility, customers can also use Alipay in the Shop app and in store on Shopify POS.

Requirements when using Alipay for Shopify Payments
To use Alipay with Shopify Payments, your store must meet the following requirements:
- You must set up Shopify Payments before you can activate Alipay.
- Your Shopify Payments account must be located in Hong Kong SAR.
- Your store must have an eligible business category.
- Your online store must be accessible and not password-protected. Learn more about removing your online store password.
- You must deactivate any conflicting additional payment gateways before you can activate Alipay.
Alipay is currently available to eligible merchants in Hong Kong SAR. If Alipay isn't available in your Shopify Payments settings, then your store might not be eligible. You can check availability in your Shopify Payments settings, which depends on your account, country, and business category.
Considerations when using Alipay
Before activating Alipay with Shopify Payments, review the following considerations:
- Customers can use Alipay only for one-time payments. Alipay isn't available for subscription orders.
- Customers can't use Alipay to buy gift card products.
- Customers can use Alipay at online checkout on desktop and mobile web.
- Alipay availability in the Shop app and in store on Shopify POS depends on your store's eligibility.
- Customers who select Alipay at checkout receive a message that they pay in Chinese yuan (CNY). The Alipay app converts the order total to CNY during payment.
- You're paid for Alipay orders in your usual Shopify Payments payout currency.
- Funds for Alipay orders are captured automatically after the customer completes payment.
- You can issue full or partial refunds for Alipay orders from your Shopify admin. Learn more about refunds with Shopify Payments.
- Alipay doesn't support card-style chargebacks. If a customer has an issue with an order, then the customer must contact you directly to resolve the issue. You can issue a refund as part of resolving the issue.
Manage Alipay
You can activate and deactivate Alipay from your Shopify Payments settings.
Activate Alipay for Shopify Payments
You can activate Alipay from the Payments section of your Shopify admin. After you request activation, your account is reviewed before Alipay becomes active. This review usually takes up to about 5 days, but can take longer.
Steps:
Desktop
From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Payments.
In the Shopify Payments section, click Manage.
Click More actions, and then click Manage payment methods.
In the Local payment methods section, click the
icon for Alipay, and then click Enable.
Mobile
From the Shopify app, tap
, and then tap 
Settings.In the Store settings section, tap Payments.
In the Shopify Payments section, tap Manage.
Tap More actions, and then tap Manage payment methods.
In the Local payment methods section, tap the
icon for Alipay, and then tap Enable.
After Alipay is approved, it's listed as an active local payment method in your Shopify Payments settings.
Deactivate Alipay for Shopify Payments
You can deactivate Alipay from the Payments section of your Shopify admin. Deactivating Alipay removes it from your checkout for new orders.
Steps:
Desktop
From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Payments.
In the Shopify Payments section, click Manage.
Click More actions, and then click Manage payment methods.
In the Local payment methods section, click the
icon for Alipay, and then click Disable.
Mobile
From the Shopify app, tap
, and then tap Settings.In the Store settings section, tap Payments.
In the Shopify Payments section, tap Manage.
Tap More actions, and then tap Manage payment methods.
In the Local payment methods section, tap the
icon for Alipay, and then tap Disable.
After you deactivate Alipay, it's no longer listed as an active local payment method in your Shopify Payments settings, and customers can't select Alipay at checkout.
Accepting payments with Alipay
When a customer pays for an order using Alipay, the payment is authorized and captured after the customer completes payment in Alipay. The order is included in your Shopify Payments payouts alongside your other Shopify Payments transactions.
If a customer doesn't complete payment, then the order isn't paid.
Customer experience
On desktop, the customer selects Alipay and scans a QR code with the Alipay app to complete payment.
On mobile web, the customer selects Alipay and is redirected to the Alipay app or Alipay payment flow. After the customer authorizes the payment, they're returned to checkout.
When Alipay is available in store on Shopify POS, the customer scans a QR code to complete payment with Alipay.
Refunds with Alipay
You can refund Alipay orders from your Shopify admin in the same way that you refund other Shopify Payments orders. You can issue full or partial refunds for up to 90 days after the original charge. The original payment must settle into your Shopify Payments balance before you can issue a refund. If the payment hasn't settled, then the refund can fail for insufficient funds. After you create a refund, the refund is processed back to the customer's Alipay account or original funding source.
