Authorizations, captures, and pre-orders with Shop Cash
Shop Cash can be part of the payment lifecycle for orders that use Shop Pay or Shop Pay Installments. You can review how Shop Cash is authorized and captured to plan manual capture workflows, partial fulfillment, cancellations, and pre-order operations.
Shop Cash is a separate payment method from the card or Shop Pay Installments portion of an order. When you review whether an order is authorized, captured, voided, or refunded, review each payment method on the order.

Shop Cash authorization and capture behavior
At checkout, the Shop Cash payment is authorized like another payment method. The order includes a Shop Cash authorization transaction with shop_cash as the gateway value where gateway values are available.
When the Shop Cash portion is captured, the order includes a Shop Cash capture transaction that's related to the Shop Cash authorization. After capture, a Shop Cash settlement is created for your store, and the Shop Cash amount is included in Shopify Payments payout activity.
The remaining order balance, when there is one, is paid with Shop Pay or Shop Pay Installments.
Automatic and manual capture for Shop Cash payments
When your store uses automatic payment capture, the card or Shop Pay Installments portion and the Shop Cash portion are captured when the order is completed.
After capture, you can review the Shop Cash capture transaction in the order transaction details. For an example of how Shop Cash and Shop Pay are recorded on the same order, refer to Shop Cash order data and third-party integrations.
Orders paid fully with Shop Cash don't follow your store's manual capture setting. The Shop Cash payment is authorized and then captured automatically when the order is placed, even when your store uses manual payment capture. Don't plan to capture that order later, because the payment is already captured and a refund is the only way to return the amount to the customer.
When an order is paid partly with Shop Cash and your store uses manual payment capture, capture-at-fulfillment, or another delayed capture workflow, the Shop Cash payment is captured through the order's payment capture flow. The Shop Cash capture can fail if the Shop Cash authorization has expired or has already been voided.
If a Shop Cash capture fails, review the order transaction details for an error transaction. Retry the capture when appropriate. If the Shop Cash authorization has been voided or expired, contact Shopify Support for guidance.
Authorization window and expired authorizations
Shop Cash authorizations are valid for approximately 30 days from the time the order is placed. After this period, unfinished Shop Cash authorizations are voided automatically during a daily process.
If you attempt to capture Shop Cash after the authorization has expired or been voided, the capture can fail. Capture Shop Cash within 30 days whenever possible.
Extended authorization periods on the Shopify Plus plan apply to the card or Shop Pay Installments payment. They don't extend the Shop Cash authorization window.
Partial fulfillment and multiple captures for Shop Cash payments
Shop Cash doesn't support partial captures or multiple captures against a single Shop Cash authorization. The first successful capture captures the full authorized Shop Cash amount.
If your store captures payments as items are fulfilled, then the full Shop Cash amount captures on the first capture. Later captures act on the remaining payment method, such as the card or Shop Pay Installments payment.
Before you use Shop Cash with partial fulfillment, multiple capture, or capture-at-fulfillment workflows, confirm the following details:
- Your third-party order management systems can process more than one payment method on 1 order.
- Your fulfillment workflow can account for the full Shop Cash amount being captured on the first capture.
- Your reconciliation workflow can match Shop Cash captures to the related order and payout transactions.
- Your team monitors failed Shop Cash capture transactions.
Voided and canceled orders paid for with Shop Cash
A Shop Cash payment can be voided before it's captured. Voiding releases the customer's hold on the Shop Cash funds and restores the funds to the customer's Shop Cash balance.
After a Shop Cash payment is captured, it can't be voided. If you need to return a captured Shop Cash amount to the customer, then process a refund instead.
When an order that includes Shop Cash is canceled before capture, the Shop Cash authorization is voided in the same way as other uncaptured payment authorizations. If your order cancellation workflow is managed by an app or third-party order management system, then confirm that the system can process cancellations for orders with multiple payment methods.
Re-authorizations and expired authorizations for Shop Cash payments
There isn't a merchant-facing API to re-authorize a Shop Cash payment. If a Shop Cash authorization has expired or has been voided, you can't re-authorize it yourself.
In some cases, Shopify Support might be able to help re-authorize against the customer's current Shop Cash balance. Re-authorization isn't guaranteed and can depend on the customer's account state and available balance.
If the card or Shop Pay Installments payment remains authorized beyond the Shop Cash authorization window, then the Shop Cash authorization might already be voided when you attempt to capture the order. In that situation, you might need to capture only the remaining payment method or contact Shopify Support to review whether Shop Cash can be re-authorized.
Pre-orders with Shop Cash
Pre-orders often rely on delayed capture, partial fulfillment, or long authorization periods. Because Shop Cash has its own authorization window and doesn't support partial captures or multiple captures, review your pre-order workflow before accepting orders that include Shop Cash.
Pre-orders that ship within approximately 30 days of order placement can usually be handled without special Shop Cash operations. For pre-orders that ship after the Shop Cash authorization window, the Shop Cash authorization might be voided before fulfillment.
Before you launch a pre-order that can include Shop Cash, confirm the following details:
- Whether the order is expected to ship within approximately 30 days
- Whether your team can capture Shop Cash before the authorization expires
- Whether your fulfillment flow can handle the full Shop Cash amount being captured on the first capture
- What happens if the customer cancels before fulfillment
- What your team does if the Shop Cash authorization expires before fulfillment
- Whether your ERP, OMS, fulfillment, and accounting systems can process the Shop Cash portion separately from the other payment method
If your pre-order flow depends on delayed capture beyond approximately 30 days, then contact Shopify Support before accepting Shop Cash on those orders.
Operational checklist for delayed capture workflows
If your store uses manual capture, capture at fulfillment, or pre-order workflows, then complete the following checks before you rely on Shop Cash:
- Capture Shop Cash within approximately 30 days of authorization whenever possible.
- Capture the Shop Cash payment and the other payment method at the same time when your workflow allows it.
- Don't split Shop Cash across multiple captures or fulfillments.
- Monitor for failed Shop Cash capture transactions.
- Define a process for retrying failed captures and contacting Shopify Support.
- Don't assume that extended authorization periods for card payments also extend Shop Cash.
