Syncing your products

The Google & YouTube channel syncs products that are available to your online store with Google Merchant Center. To publish your products on Google and use them in Performance Max campaigns, you need to add required product data. You can also optimize your product titles and descriptions for Google Shopping search listings by using the Google & YouTube channel.

For eligible stores selling in the United States, products synced to Google Merchant Center using the Google & YouTube channel can display in relevant Google Shopping tab search listings for free.

You can view the status of your products or change your account settings in the Google & YouTube channel.

Make products available to the Google & YouTube channel

When you set up the Google & YouTube channel for the first time, all of the products that are available to your online store are automatically synced with Google Merchant Center. If you prefer to choose which products to sync, then you can change the availability of a single product manually or do a bulk action to change the availability for several products.

Product data

Google uses product data to help categorize your synced products on Google. Some of the data that Google can use isn't available from a product's details and needs to be added from the Google & YouTube channel. After your products are made available to the Google & YouTube channel, add the missing required product data to complete the sync to your Google Merchant Center account.

For instructions on adding product data, refer to Syncing your products on Google Merchant Center Help. This is also where you can find the following information:

Troubleshooting product sync issues

If your products aren't syncing correctly or display errors, then review these common issues and solutions. For additional product errors and detailed troubleshooting, refer to product disapprovals and warnings.

Troubleshoot: View product errors in your Shopify admin

To view errors for a specific product:

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Products.
  2. Open the product you want to check.
  3. In the Sales channels section, click Google to view any errors.
Troubleshoot: Missing description error

If your product displays a "Missing description" error, then it needs a description before it can sync to Google.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Products.
  2. Open the product with the error.
  3. Add a detailed product description in the Description field.
  4. Click Save.
Troubleshoot: Missing image error

If your product displays a "Missing image" error, then it needs at least one image before it can sync to Google.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Products.
  2. Open the product with the error.
  3. In the Media section, add at least one product image.
  4. Click Save.
Troubleshoot: Unavailable landing page error

If your product displays an "Unavailable landing page" error, then the product isn't available to the required sales channels.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Products.
  2. Open the product with the error.
  3. In the Sales channels section, confirm the product is available to both Online Store and Google & YouTube.
  4. If either channel is unchecked, then check it and click Save.
Troubleshoot: Missing GTIN or MPN error

If your product displays a "Missing GTIN or MPN" error, then Google requires unique product identifiers to match your products to their catalog.

You can resolve this error using one of these methods:

  • Add a barcode (GTIN): In your Shopify admin, go to Products, open the product, and add the barcode in the Inventory section.
  • Add brand and MPN: In the Google & YouTube channel, add the brand name and Manufacturer Part Number (MPN) for products without barcodes.
Troubleshoot: Promotional overlay on image error

If your product displays a "Promotional overlay on image" error, then your product images contain elements that Google doesn't allow.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Products.
  2. Open the product with the error.
  3. Replace images that contain text, logos, watermarks, or promotional badges with clean product images.
  4. Click Save.
Troubleshoot: Excessive capitalization error

If your product displays an "Excessive capitalization" error, then your product title uses all capital letters, which Google doesn't allow.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Products.
  2. Open the product with the error.
  3. Change the product title from all capitals (for example, "GREEN SHIRT") to sentence or title case (for example, "Green shirt").
  4. Click Save.
Troubleshoot: Products not appearing on Google

If your products sync successfully but don't appear on Google surfaces, then consider these factors:

  • Review time: Google reviews new products within 3-5 business days after initial sync.
  • Policy compliance: Products must comply with Google's Shopping policies. Policy violations can prevent products from displaying.
  • Account status: Check if your Google Merchant Center account has any warnings or suspensions in the Google & YouTube channel Settings.
  • Product eligibility: Some product categories have additional requirements. Review product requirements.
