Selling on ChatGPT

The ChatGPT channel acts as a discovery-focused referrer platform for customers to find your products. It's active by default for eligible stores, but you can remove ChatGPT's access to your products through Shopify Catalog in Sales channels > Agentic in your Shopify admin.

ChatGPT users complete their purchase on your online store checkout in a ChatGPT in-app browser, or in a new tab when customers use ChatGPT web. Because ChatGPT sales happen in your online store checkout, all your customizations, branding, selling strategies, and payment methods are supported.

Requirements for selling on ChatGPT

To sell on ChatGPT, you need to meet the following eligibility requirements:

• Your store must sell to customers in the United States, however, your store can be based outside the United States.
• Your products must be eligible for Shopify Catalog.
• You must read and agree to the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.
• You must have your Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy completed in Settings > Policies in your Shopify admin. Learn more about adding store policies.

Considerations for selling on ChatGPT

Review the following considerations for selling on ChatGPT:

• You don't need to do anything for your products to be discovered by ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog. For more information, refer to Shopify Catalog and product discovery for agentic storefronts.
• If you remove ChatGPT's access to your product data through Shopify Catalog, then your product data is filtered out of any data that's provided to ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog.
• ChatGPT is a product discovery channel. Customers using ChatGPT are redirected to buy products in your online store checkout, therefore there's no option to activate or deactivate a ChatGPT direct checkout setting in your Shopify admin.
• Ensure that your product descriptions include any relevant legal disclosures in the first 6,000 characters.
• B2B-only products aren't supported for agentic storefronts.
• If you have any products that are included in OpenAI's Prohibited products and services, then they don't display in ChatGPT product discovery results. For more information, refer to Open AI's Commerce policies.
• There are no fees associated with selling in ChatGPT. You pay only your standard payment processing fees.

Opt out of ChatGPT with agentic storefronts

You can remove Shopify Catalog access for ChatGPT, but your products might still be displayed or referenced by the AI channel through other external discovery and listing methods, such as web crawling and indexing. If you need to completely hide a product from ChatGPT, then refer to Hiding products from being discoverable by AI channels.

Steps:

1. From your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Agentic.

2. Deactivate Allow Shopify to manage for me.

3. Click ChatGPT.

4. Deactivate Shopify Catalog access.

5. Click Save.

Customer experience with ChatGPT

The customer checkout experience is different for shopping in ChatGPT compared to AI channels that offer direct checkout, such as Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta. Customers can pay with any of your accepted payment methods on your full online store checkout displayed in a ChatGPT in-app browser, or displayed in a new tab for ChatGPT web.
