Discounts and gift cards in Markets
Discounts and gift cards work across markets, but there are important considerations when your store sells in multiple currencies. Understanding how discount values and gift card balances are converted helps you avoid unexpected pricing for your customers.

Discounts
Discount behavior across markets depends on whether the discount value is a percentage or a fixed amount. Percentage discounts apply to the customer's local price with no conversion needed. Fixed-amount discounts are created in your store's default currency and converted at checkout.
Percentage discounts
Percentage discounts work the same way in every market and currency. A 20% discount takes 20% off the product price regardless of which currency the customer is paying in.
No currency conversion is needed for percentage discounts. They're applied to the price displayed to the customer in their local currency.
Fixed-amount discounts
Fixed-amount discounts are created in your store's default currency. When a customer in a different market uses the discount, the amount is converted to their local currency at checkout using the current exchange rate.
For example, your store's default currency is USD and you create a $10.00 USD discount. A customer in a market using EUR applies the discount at checkout. At the time of checkout, the exchange rate between USD and EUR is 0.92. The customer receives €9.20 EUR off their order.
Free shipping discounts
Free shipping discounts work across all markets. If you set a minimum purchase amount for a free shipping discount, then that amount is in your store's default currency and is converted to the customer's local currency at checkout.
For example, you create a free shipping discount with a minimum purchase of $75.00 USD. A customer in a market using GBP needs to reach the equivalent of $75.00 USD in their local currency (based on the current exchange rate) to qualify for free shipping.
Buy X Get Y discounts
Buy X Get Y discounts work across markets. The products and quantities defined in the discount apply in all markets where those products are available. If the discount includes a fixed-amount value (for example, Buy 2, get 1 for $5.00 USD off), then the fixed amount is converted to the customer's currency at checkout.
Automatic discounts
Automatic discounts apply to all eligible customers across all markets by default, but you can assign them to specific markets the same way as code-based discounts. If the automatic discount is a fixed amount, then it's converted to the customer's currency at checkout.
Discount eligibility by market
You can control which customers a discount applies to in two ways:
- Assign discounts to specific markets: When you create or edit a discount, you can select which markets it applies to. Only customers in those markets can use the discount.
- Customer eligibility rules: When you create a discount, you can restrict it to specific customer segments. These rules apply across all markets the customer qualifies for.
You can assign discounts to specific B2B, country or region, and retail markets, but you can't assign discounts to specific channel markets.
By default, discount codes work across all markets. When a customer enters a discount code, it's applied based on the discount's rules, market assignments, and customer eligibility.
Gift cards
Gift cards are created and denominated in your store's default currency. You can't create gift cards in a specific market's local currency.
For example, if your store's default currency is USD, then all gift cards are created with a USD balance — regardless of which market the customer who purchased it is in.
Redeeming gift cards in a foreign currency
When a customer redeems a gift card in a market that uses a different currency than your store's default, the gift card balance is converted at the current exchange rate at the time of redemption.
For example, a customer has a gift card with a $50.00 USD balance. They make a purchase in a market using CAD. At the time of checkout, the exchange rate is 1.36. The gift card covers up to $68.00 CAD of the order.
The gift card's remaining balance is tracked in your store's default currency (USD). Each time the card is used in a foreign currency, the amount deducted from the balance is converted back to USD at the current rate.
Gift card considerations
Review the following considerations for using gift cards with Markets:
- The value displayed to the customer on the gift card balance page is in your store's default currency.
- Because exchange rates fluctuate, the effective value of a gift card in a foreign currency might change between the time it's purchased and when it's redeemed.
- Gift cards purchased as products follow the same currency rules. For a customer in your EUR market, the gift card product is priced in EUR, but the gift card balance is created in your store's default currency.
