Bulgaria currency change in Markets
Bulgaria completed their changeover plan to transition from using the Bulgarian Lev (BGN) to the Euro (EUR) for electronic transactions on January 1, 2026.

Changes to Markets currency customizations with Bulgarian Lev
If you use Shopify Payments, then your markets were previously configured to display and charge customers in Bulgarian Lev. This configuration has been changed to display and charge customers in Euros on your behalf. No other aspects of your customer experience have been changed.
Changes to store default currency and pricing with Bulgarian Lev
Your store's default currency and product pricing aren't changed.
If your store default currency is set to use Bulgarian Lev and you use Shopify Payments, then your product prices are now converted to Euros for customers to buy in. It's recommended that you update your product pricing and store default currency to Euros.
If you don't use Shopify Payments, then you need to update your store default currency and product pricing to Euros. After you update your pricing and store default currency, you can't change it back to Bulgarian Lev.
Updates to gift cards and discounts with Bulgarian Lev
If you previously issued gift cards or created discounts in Bulgarian Lev, then they continue to be valid for customers. When a customer redeems a gift card or discount in Bulgarian Lev on your store, then the redemption value or discount value is converted to Euros, or to the currency of their transaction.
Updates to catalogs in Bulgarian Lev
If you previously created catalogs in Bulgarian Lev, then they're still valid and haven't been changed. If you use Shopify Payments, then markets that use catalogs with a currency of Bulgarian Lev will have prices converted into Euros for customers. It's recommended that you update your catalog currency to use Euros. After you update your catalog currency, you can't change it back to Bulgarian Lev.
Payments and payouts for Shopify Payments
If you already had both EUR and BGN bank accounts linked to Shopify Payments, then we deactivated your BGN bank account and started using your EUR bank account for payouts.
If you only had a BGN bank account linked to Shopify Payments, then we converted it to EUR and your payouts will continue to be deposited as expected. If payouts fail, then you can resolve the failure on your payouts page.
Dual pricing display requirements with Bulgarian Lev
Between August 8, 2025 and December 31, 2026, all businesses selling to customers in Bulgaria in Euros are required to display prices in both Euros and Bulgarian Lev. Your Shopify checkout is already compliant with this requirement.
On your online store, you need to make changes in Liquid to display prices in both currencies, or use an app from the Shopify App Store.
Transactions continue to take place in one currency.
