Upgrading from shipping profiles to shipping options by market
Shipping is moving from shipping profiles to markets. Instead of delivery profiles, location groups, and shipping zones, you set up shipping options for each market, with rates that vary by product and location.
Shipping options by market roll out gradually over an extended period, so stores aren't all upgraded at the same time. Until your store is upgraded, you continue to use shipping profiles as usual, and your existing rates keep working.
When your store is upgraded, your shipping setup is migrated for you, so you don't need to recreate your rates, and most merchants don't need to take any action. Stores that use shipping apps might be upgraded later, after those apps become compatible. You can opt out during an opt-out window after your store is upgraded. For more information, refer to Switching back to shipping profiles.

Identifying your store's shipping settings system
Two shipping systems exist during this change, and your store uses one of them at a time. To verify which one your store uses, go to Settings > Shipping and delivery in your Shopify admin:
- Shipping profiles: If your shipping is organized in shipping profiles, with shipping zones and rates, then your store uses the current system. Refer to shipping profiles and shipping rates.
- Shipping options by market: If your shipping is organized by market, in a Shipping options section, then your store has been upgraded. Refer to shipping options by market.
Your store keeps its current system until it's upgraded.
Key changes to your shipping settings
Review the following table to learn more about the key changes and differences when your store's shipping settings upgrade to shipping options by market.
| Area | Shipping profiles (current system) | Shipping options by market (new system) |
|---|---|---|
| Where you set up shipping | From your Shipping and delivery settings, in shipping profiles. | From Markets, in shipping options for each market. |
| Grouping regions | You group the countries and regions that you ship to into shipping zones. | You set up shipping for each market, which groups the countries and regions that you sell and ship to. |
| Grouping locations | You organize the locations that you ship from into location groups, each with its own zones and rates. | Each rate uses location conditions to set which locations it ships from. |
| Grouping products | You create a separate product-based shipping profile for products that need different rates. | Each rate uses product conditions to set which products it applies to. |
| Combining rates at checkout | When a cart matches more than one rate, your customers are charged the rates added together. | When a cart matches more than one rate within a shipping option, your customers are charged the price of the highest rate. When a cart matches more than one shipping option, your customers are charged the prices of the options added together. |
| Split shipping | You can activate or deactivate the Split shipping setting. | Split shipping is always on. If you currently have it turned off, then it's turned on. Your rates and how they're combined don't change, but an order might be split into more than one shipment at checkout, such as Arrives in 2 shipments, each with its own delivery time. |
After your store is upgraded
After your store is upgraded, you manage shipping options from Markets, organized by market, and you can also customize shipping for your regional, B2B, and POS markets.
To match the regions that your previous shipping zones covered, the upgrade might also create sub-region markets, such as a market for a specific state or province. This is expected, and these markets carry your migrated shipping options.
After the upgrade, review these items:
- Make sure that staff who manage shipping have the Markets permission, because it isn't granted automatically and isn't included in existing staff roles.
- Review how your rates are consolidated.
- Review the collections created during the upgrade.
- If your shipping options or rates aren't working as expected, refer to troubleshoot your shipping after the upgrade.
How your rates are consolidated
When your store is upgraded, your existing rates are combined to help prevent overcharging. Rates that share the same shipping option name are consolidated into one shipping option automatically. When more than one rate in the same shipping option applies to a cart, only the highest matching rate is charged, instead of the rates being added together. This happens automatically, so you don't need to change anything. For more information, refer to how rates are combined at checkout.
Free shipping is consolidated where possible. If your free shipping can be combined into a shipping option, then it's applied to that option and reduces its cost to zero. If it can't be combined, then it's kept as a separate free shipping option that customers can choose at checkout.
Collections created during the upgrade
When your store is upgraded, your existing product groupings from your shipping profiles become collections. These collections have a [Shipping] prefix, such as [Shipping] Fragile, and they're automatically assigned to the correct product conditions for your migrated shipping options, so that your rates continue to apply to the right products.
These collections are unpublished, so they aren't displayed to customers or on your storefront. You might notice new collections in your collections list after the upgrade. This is expected, and they support your shipping setup.
Example: how your shipping is migrated
The following example shows how a store's shipping profiles, zones, and rates are migrated to shipping options by market. Your shipping options are grouped by market, and rates that share a shipping option name are consolidated so that only the highest matching rate is charged.

Troubleshoot your shipping after the upgrade
If your shipping doesn't work as expected after your store is upgraded, then review the following issues.
The upgrade didn't complete
In rare cases, the upgrade might not complete. If this happens, then a message is displayed on your Shipping and delivery settings, and your store keeps its current shipping profiles setup, so your shipping keeps working as before. You can try the upgrade again later, or contact Shopify Support for help.
Your shipping options or rates are incorrect
After your store is upgraded, review your shipping options in Markets to confirm that your rates are correct. In rare cases, an issue during the upgrade can cause incorrect rates to be displayed at checkout, or prevent customers from completing their order. If your shipping options or rates are missing or incorrect, then check these settings:
- Confirm that you have the Markets permission, because shipping is now managed in Markets.
- Review the collections created during the upgrade to confirm that your products and variants are grouped correctly.
- Check whether any shipping apps that you use are compatible with shipping options by market. A banner on your Shipping and delivery settings page tells you if an installed app isn't compatible.
If your shipping still doesn't work as expected, then you have a few options:
- Switch back to shipping profiles during your opt-out window, if it's available for your store.
- Edit your rates in Markets to correct them in the new system.
- Contact Shopify Support, who can help you troubleshoot your shipping options.
A shipping app isn't compatible with shipping options by market
Some shipping apps aren't compatible with shipping options by market yet. If an app provides rates for your store and it isn't compatible, then its rates might not be displayed at checkout, which can prevent customers from completing their order. To avoid this, stores that rely on these apps are upgraded later, after the apps become compatible. If a rate is missing at checkout after your store is upgraded, then check whether the app that provides it is compatible with shipping options by market.
Switching back to shipping profiles
After your store is upgraded, you can switch back to shipping profiles during an opt-out window from Settings > Shipping and delivery.
