Setting up shipping options for a market

You can set up shipping options for each market that you sell to, so you control the delivery choices and prices that are displayed to customers in those markets at checkout.

Each shipping option can contain one or more shipping rates. You can set up flat, order amount, weight, or carrier- or app-calculated shipping rates. Each rate can apply to specific products or fulfillment locations, so you can charge different prices for different products or locations. By default, a rate applies to all products in the market. If you're new to shipping, then review the shipping strategy guide, or get familiar with how shipping options work, before you set up your rates.

Considerations for setting up shipping options for a market

Before you set up shipping options for a market, review the following considerations:

  • Customers can order only from regions that are in an active market. To ship to a new region, add and activate a market that includes it.
  • A market inherits its shipping from a parent market by default. To override shipping options for a child market, click Shipping, and then click Customize.
  • To use weight-based or carrier-calculated rates, make sure that your products have accurate weight values.

Set up a flat shipping rate

You can set up a flat rate for your shipping option. A flat rate charges a single price that you set for every order that the rate applies to.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Markets.

  2. Click the market that you want to set up shipping for.

  3. Click Shipping.

  4. Click Add shipping option.

  5. In the Name field, enter a name for the shipping option. The name is displayed to customers at checkout.

  6. From the Rate type drop-down menu, select Flat.

  7. In the Price field, enter the amount that you charge. To make the rate free, enter 0.

  8. Optional: To add delivery details, such as Signature required, click Add delivery details, and then enter the details. Delivery details are displayed to customers at checkout.

  9. Optional: To display transit time to your customers at checkout, complete the following steps:

    1. From the Transit time drop-down menu, select a suggested transit time or enter a custom transit time.
    2. Optional: If you select the Custom transit time, then enter a custom range or a single value for your transit time, such as 3-5 days or 3 days, and then click Done.
  10. Optional: To apply the rate to specific product collections, complete the following steps:

    1. From the Applies to drop-down menu, select Specific collections.
    2. Click Add collections, select the collections that the rate applies to, and then click Done.
  11. Optional: To apply the rate to specific locations, complete the following steps:

    1. Beside Ships from, click the Edit icon.
    2. Select the locations that the rate ships from, and then click Done.
  12. Optional: To add another rate to the shipping option, click Add another rate, and then set up the rate. If a cart matches more than one rate, then only the highest matching rate is charged at checkout.

  13. Optional: To offer free shipping over a minimum order amount, activate Offer free shipping over a minimum order amount, and then enter a Minimum amount.

  14. Click Done, and then click Save.

Set up an order amount shipping rate

You can set up an order amount rate for your shipping option. An order amount rate charges different prices based on the total value of the order.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Markets.

  2. Click the market that you want to set up shipping for.

  3. Click Shipping.

  4. Click Add shipping option.

  5. In the Name field, enter a name for the shipping option.

  6. From the Rate type drop-down menu, select Order amount.

  7. For each order value range, enter a Minimum, a Maximum, and a Price. Set the Minimum field to 0 on your lowest range and leave the Maximum field empty on your highest range, so that your ranges cover every order. If an order's total falls outside your ranges, then no rate applies and the customer receives a shipping error at checkout.

  9. Optional: To apply the rate to specific product collections, complete the following steps:

    1. From the Applies to drop-down menu, select Specific collections.
    2. Click Add collections, select the collections that the rate applies to, and then click Done.
  10. Optional: To apply the rate to specific locations, complete the following steps:

    1. Beside Ships from, click the Edit icon.
    2. Select the locations that the rate ships from, and then click Done.
  11. Optional: To add another rate to the shipping option, click Add another rate, and then set up the rate. If a cart matches more than one rate, then only the highest matching rate is charged at checkout.

  12. Optional: To offer free shipping over a minimum order amount, activate Offer free shipping over a minimum order amount, and then enter a Minimum amount.

  13. Click Done, and then click Save.

Set up a weight-based shipping rate

You can set up a weight-based rate for your shipping option. A weight-based rate charges different prices based on the total weight of each shipment. If an order is split into more than one shipment, then a weight-based rate is calculated for each shipment and the amounts are added together, resulting in one final rate. A weight-based shipping option can have only one rate.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Markets.

  2. Click the market that you want to set up shipping for.

  3. Click Shipping.

  4. Click Add shipping option.

  5. In the Name field, enter a name for the shipping option.

  6. From the Rate type drop-down menu, select Weight.

  7. For each weight range, enter a Minimum, a Maximum, and a Price. Set the Minimum field to 0 on your lowest range and leave the Maximum field empty on your highest range, so that your ranges cover every order. If an order's weight falls outside your ranges, then no rate applies and the customer receives a shipping error at checkout.

  11. Optional: To offer free shipping over a minimum order amount, activate Offer free shipping over a minimum order amount, and then enter a Minimum amount.

  12. Click Done, and then click Save.

Set up a carrier- or app-calculated shipping rate

You can set up a carrier- or app-calculated rate for your shipping option. A carrier- or app-calculated rate displays live rates from a carrier, such as UPS, FedEx, or USPS, or a shipping app. The carrier calculates the price based on the order's weight, dimensions, and destination. A carrier- or app-calculated shipping option can have only one rate.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Markets.

  2. Click the market that you want to set up shipping for.

  3. Click Shipping.

  4. Click Add shipping option.

  5. In the Name field, enter a name for the shipping option.

  6. From the Rate type drop-down menu, select Carrier or app calculated.

  7. Select the carrier or app, and then select the services that you want to display to customers at checkout.

  8. Optional: To mark up or discount the rate, add a handling fee as a percentage, a fixed amount, or both. To discount the rate, enter a negative value, such as -5% or -2.50.

  11. Click Done, and then click Save.

Offer free shipping

You can offer free shipping on any rate by setting its Price to 0, or by activating Offer free shipping over a minimum order amount and entering a Minimum amount. For example, you can offer free shipping on orders over $50 USD.

To offer free shipping to specific customers instead, create a free shipping discount.

Edit or delete a shipping option

You can change a shipping option's rates and conditions or remove it from a market at any time.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Markets.

  2. Click the market with the shipping option that you want to edit.

  3. Click Shipping, and then click the More actions menu beside the shipping option that you want to change.

  4. Select Edit to change the rates and conditions, Set as inactive to stop offering the option, or Delete to remove it.

  5. Click Save, and then click Done and Save to save the market.

Test your shipping options

Your shipping options determine which delivery choices and prices are displayed to customers at checkout. After you set up your shipping options, place a test order to verify the options that your customers can choose from. For more information, refer to troubleshooting and testing shipping rates.

Customers aren't offered any shipping options until they enter a delivery address. When a customer enters a shipping address at checkout, only the shipping options that apply to their order and address are displayed, and the cheapest option is selected by default. If a customer changes their cart after reaching checkout, then their shipping options recalculate when they continue to the final step.

If a customer's address is in a region that isn't in an active market, then they're notified that no shipping option is available.
