Understanding carbon-neutral shipping
Shipping products to customers often results in carbon emissions that contribute to climate change. Planet lets you offset these emissions by funding companies that remove an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere. By offering carbon-neutral shipping at checkout, you reduce your deliveries’ environmental impact and meet customer demand for sustainable options.
Planet subscription plans
Planet lets you make every shipment carbon neutral. You can pay for it yourself, let customers choose to pay, or combine both approaches.
All shipments carbon neutral
With the All shipments carbon neutral plan, you pay to offset the shipping emissions for every order. The average cost per order depends on the carbon removal type you choose, shipping distance, package weight, and shipping method.
Customers choose
With the Customers choose plan, you can let your customers participate in the fight against climate change by paying $0.50 USD for carbon-neutral shipping. The funds collected from your customers are used to offset their shipment’s emissions.
Combined option (All shipments carbon neutral + Customers choose)
With the Combined option plan, you not only provide carbon-neutral shipping on all orders, but you also invite your customers to join you in creating a positive climate impact. The average cost per order depends on the carbon removal type you choose, shipping distance, package weight, and shipping method. This collaborative approach creates a sense of community and encourages your customers to participate in removing carbon emissions.
Carbon removal types
If you select the All shipments carbon neutral or Combined option plan, then you can choose how Planet removes carbon emissions for your orders. All options ensure every delivery is carbon neutral.
Decade
The Decade removal type uses carbon credits from nature-based projects such as reforestation and grassland restoration, and partners with companies such as Grassroots Carbon and Pachama.
Century
The Century removal type mixes nature-based projects with cutting-edge technologies such as direct air capture and enhanced rock weathering, and partners with companies such as Mati, Vaulted, Climeworks, and Planetary.
Millennium
The Millennium option mixes nature-based projects with cutting-edge technologies such as direct air capture and enhanced rock weathering, with an even greater impact on these technologies, and partners with companies such as Mati, Vaulted, Climeworks, and Planetary.
Subscription plan variations
The price estimates provided for Planet subscription plans are based on average emissions per order across the Shopify platform. However, the actual cost per order for your store might vary depending on factors such as shipping distance, package weight, and mode of transportation.
Billing and charges with Planet
When you subscribe to Planet, you're billed automatically on a monthly basis.
If you select the All shipments carbon neutral plan, then you're billed for your carbon-neutral shipping charges. If you select the Customers choose plan, then your bill equals what customers contributed for carbon-neutral shipping. If you select the Combined option plan, then your bill includes your carbon-neutral shipping charges plus customer contributions
Shopify doesn't take a cut—100% of funding goes to carbon removal projects.
For the All shipments carbon neutral and Combined option plans, if tracking information is available for an order, then Planet considers it delivered when the tracking information indicates that it's been delivered.
In cases where tracking information is unavailable, Planet uses a default time frame to determine when an order is considered delivered. Specifically, an order is marked as delivered 20 days after the customer has placed the order. This allows for a reasonable amount of time for the package to reach its destination, even without tracking information.
