Editing customer details on an order

You can edit the customer details on an order from the Orders page of your Shopify admin. You can update the shipping address, contact information, and customer link after an order is placed, but you can't edit the billing address.

Edit a customer's shipping address

You can update a customer's shipping address after an order is placed, such as when they entered the wrong address or moved.

When you change the customer's shipping address, you might be prompted to review address validation or tax adjustments:

  • Address validation: If it isn't possible to deliver to the address that you enter, then a warning or error is displayed. Learn more about validating addresses in your Shopify admin.
  • Tax adjustments: Changing the destination on an order can recalculate taxes, and you choose how to collect or refund the difference.

Considerations for recalculating taxes on shipping address changes

When you change the shipping address on an order, taxes are recalculated based on the new destination. The Summary card in the Edit shipping address dialog displays the previous taxes, the new taxes, and the difference to collect or refund.

Review the following considerations that apply when taxes are recalculated:

  • Taxes are recalculated only for unfulfilled orders.
  • Items or exchange items added to an order after a shipping address change are taxed based on the order's current shipping address.
  • If an order can't be edited because of order edit restrictions, such as imported orders, Shop Pay Installments orders, or orders that use local delivery, then taxes can't be changed.
  • If the new tax is higher than the original, then you can send the customer an invoice for the difference, or track it on the order details page to collect it later.
  • If the new tax is lower than the original, then you can refund the difference to the customer after saving.
