Importing contact lists from Mailchimp manually

Before you can import your contacts to Shopify, you first need to export them from Mailchimp.

After you've exported your contacts from Mailchimp, you'll have a ZIP file saved to your computer. This ZIP file contains a separate CSV file for each contact status that your Mailchimp audience uses. Each file name begins with its status:

• subscribed_members: These contacts opted in to marketing emails.
• unsubscribed_members: These contacts opted out of marketing emails.
• nonsubscribed_members: These contacts are in your audience, but they never opted in to marketing emails.
• cleaned_members: These addresses became undeliverable after emails bounced, so Mailchimp stopped sending to them. Because these users can't be contacted successfully, you don't need to import this file.

Unzip the ZIP file, and then clean up each CSV file that you want to import. Keep the original export files, because they're your record of when each contact subscribed.

Steps:

1. Upload the CSV file to Google Sheets.
2. In your spreadsheet, keep only the following column headers, and delete the others.
   • Email Address
   • First Name
   • Last Name
   • Phone Number
   • Company
3. Rename the following column headers, and make sure to leave no spaces on either side of text:
   • From Email Address to Email
   • From Phone Number to Phone
4. Add a new column header named Accepts Email Marketing, and enter values in this column for each customer according to the following criteria:
   • If the file contains your subscribed contacts, then enter yes for all customers. That file name begins with subscribed_members.
   • For every other file, including unsubscribed, non-subscribed, and cleaned contacts, enter no for all customers.
5. Add a new column header named Accepts SMS Marketing, and enter yes or no values for each customer.
6. Export the file to your computer in CSV format.

After you have cleaned up your CSV files, you need to import each of these files to your Shopify store to complete your import.

Error found in CSV header

If you encounter the error Error found in CSV header when you import your CSV file to Shopify, then that means that the column header names don't match. Verify whether the column header names in your CSV file match the required names.
