How Shopify responds to NCII
Consistent with applicable law, Shopify doesn't permit non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII) on its platform, including on stores and on Shop. NCII is nudity or sexual imagery shared without the consent of the person depicted. This includes:
- Real photographs or videos
- AI-generated or digitally altered content, such as deepfakes, that depicts an identifiable person, even if no original intimate image of that person exists
If Shopify determines that content qualifies as NCII, then the content is removed.
Reporting NCII
You can submit a removal request to Shopify if you encounter NCII on a store or on Shop.
Who can submit a report
You can submit an NCII removal request if:
- You're the person depicted in the content, or
- You're authorized to act on behalf of the person depicted
How to submit a report
Before submitting your report, you need the URL of the store page or Shop listing where the content is displayed. To submit the report, use the online Report non-consensual intimate imagery form.
What happens after you submit a report
Shopify reviews NCII reports as a priority. Shopify might follow up to request additional information. If the content qualifies as NCII, then it is removed.
Responding to an NCII removal notice
If Shopify removes content from your store because of an NCII report, then you can review the notice or appeal the decision.
I received a notice that content was removed from my store. Now what?
If Shopify removes content from your store in response to an NCII report, then you receive a notification in your Shopify admin and by email explaining what was removed and why. You then have two options:
- If you review the notice and agree the content shouldn't have been on your store, then no further action is required.
- If you believe the content was removed in error, then you can appeal the decision.
How do I appeal a removal decision?
To appeal, follow the instructions provided in the notification you received in your Shopify admin or by email. Learn more about resolving terms violations.
